4:30 PM - It was a volatile week for the Indian market which saw a couple of day
s of consolidation and then major weakness which caused the indices break all im
portant support levels in a sell-off brought about partly by weak domestic and s
ome negative global cues. Poor earning numbers from heavyweights, weak IIP data
and a sell-off in Korea and China had our market reeling under pressure of major
profit booking, despite a strong bump-up during mahurat trading last week. This
week's performance was poor and the numbers are: Sensex down 4.2% and Nifty dow
n 4%. CNX Midcap index was down 2.9%, BSE Smallcap index down 1.3% over the week
. BSE Realty index was down 6.8%, BSE Bankex down 6.1%, BSE Metal index down 3.2
%, BSE IT index down 2.6% and BSE Oil & Gas index down 4.2%.

4:25 PM - It was an exceptionally negative day for the Indian market which witne
ssed a huge sell-off following poor news flows, both domestic and global. It ope
ned soft and from there on, stayed under the pressure of profit booking which in
tensified following disappointing IIP data and China rate hike fears which spark
ed a sell-off. All sectoral indices closed the day with deep cuts. Sensex shut s
hop at 20156, down 432 points and Nifty at 6071, down 122 points from the previo
us close. CNX Midcap index was down 2.1% and BSE Smallcap index was down 2.4%. T
he market breadth was negative with advances at 194 against declines of 1125 on
the NSE. Top Nifty gainers were Dr Reddy's, Bajaj Auto and Hero Honda while lose
