Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiner’s
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be written only in the Component –
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Instructions to students:
Introduction to course
This course deals with fresh and hardened concrete. Importance of Bogue's components, chemical
admixtures, mineral admixture, and mix design. Durability of concrete, RMC concrete, fiber reinforced
concrete and light weight concrete are discussed. Students are taught the design of concrete mix by
IS:10262-2004, ACI and BS methods. The students will be trained to demonstrate experiments on
hardened concrete and also taught NDT tests concepts.
Preamble
Cement: Cement sets and hardens independently and can bind other materials together. It is a very
important building material used in the construction industry. It has replaced all other binding
materials, for example, clay and lime. In any ordinary construction, the cement accounts to about 15-
17% of the cost of construction. In some other major constructions like concrete roads and bridges, it
is much more. India is the second-largest cement producing country in the world after China.
Ready-mix concrete (RMC) is a type of concrete manufactured in a batching plant, according to a given
set of proportions, and then delivered to a work site, by truck mounted with mixers. This results in a
precise mixture, allowing special concrete mixtures to be developed and implemented on construction
sites. Ready-mix concrete is manufactured under controlled operations and transported and placed at
site using sophisticated equipment and methods.
In this context, debate on the topic: “RMC is superior to cast in situ concrete.” Prepare a report
addressing the following:
B 1.1 Comparision of RMC and cast in situ concrete
B 1.2 Status of RMC in Bangalore
B 1.3 Justification of stance
B 1.4 Conclusions
B2 (20 Marks)
Design a concrete mix using IS 10262 (2009) for the following data:
Fly ash / GGBS-100-X% of binder content
Slump flow desired – 150mm
