Title: Cultivating a Growth Mindset and Grit through Arts: A Psychoeducation and an
Art Exhibit for iGens in this Mental Health Month

Program Coordinator: OSS-SWS-GCU, LADORA & MENDORO

Date of Implementation: 1st Semester of SY 2019-2020

Participants: All Enrolled BSU Students

INTRODUCTION

Wellbeing has become one of the main advocacies of those in the helping
profession in this so-called of Age of Disruption. In fact, the United Nations and
Development Programme (UNDP) targeted Good Health and Well-Being and Gender
Equality as the third and fifth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to be achieved
by 2030. The focus on wellbeing was recognized, too in the Philippines when R.A.
11036- Philippine Mental Health Law was signed barely two years ago. This R.A.
11036 is An Act Establishing a National Mental Health Policy for the Purpose of
Enhancing the Delivery of Integrated Mental Health Services, Promoting and Protecting
the Rights of Persons Utilizing Psychosocial Health Services, Appropriating Funds
Therefor and Other Purposes.

In recognition, the focus of the Guidance and Counseling Unit’s (GCU) activity
is on strengthening wellbeing of students since this is an issue which affects all
genders in all strata of human life. Through orientation and psychoeducation
programs on mental health, this program aims to address the growing concern on
adolescent depression which is the most common mental health problem worldwide.
Data from the WHO showed that worldwide 10-20% of children and adolescents
experience mental disorders. Half of all mental illnesses begin by the age of 14 and
three-quarters by mid-20s. Neuropsychiatric conditions are the leading cause of
disability in young people in all regions. If untreated, these conditions severely
influence children’s development, their educational attainments and their potential
to live fulfilling and productive lives. Children with mental disorders face major
challenges with stigma, isolation and discrimination, as well as lack of access to
health care and education facilities, in violation of their fundamental human rights.

Poor mental health can have important effects on the wider health and
development of adolescents and is associated with several health and social outcomes
such as higher alcohol, tobacco and illicit substances use, adolescent pregnancy,
school dropout and delinquent behaviors. There is growing consensus that healthy
development during childhood and adolescence contributes to good mental health
and can prevent mental health problems, (WHO, 2017).

BSU Mission: To provide quality education to enhance food security, sustainable communities, industry innovation, climate resilience, gender

In the Philippines, data indicates that 3.3 million Filipinos suffer from
depressive disorders, 3.1 suffer from anxiety disorders and 2,558 were reported
suicide cases which means that 2.9 suicides per 100,000 population in 2012. Among
high school students, 17% of 13-18 years old said they attempted suicide atleast
once, 12% said they seriously considered attempting suicide while 11% have made
plans on how they would commit suicide. Nearly 8 in 10 of reported suicide cases in
2012 were males. However, data revealed depression has 3X higher prevalence among
females (16.2%) than males (5.3%).

Social media envy, the tendency to be jealous of your friends’ activities on

social media is a “moderate significant predictor of symptoms of depression” among
Filipino students, (Reyes, A.M. and Gonzales, J., 2017). Researchers at the University
of Missouri have discovered that Facebook use triggers envy in some users, and that
those feelings can lead to depression.

In response, this program is born. Counselors need to employ

multidisciplinary methods to strengthen student’s wellbeing, to detect mental health
problems early, and to provide treatments which include counseling based on the
framework of evidence-based practice (EBP) such as Dialectic-Behavior Therapy
(DBT) and, where appropriate, refer for psychopharmacological medication.

Henceforth, this program primarily aims to enhance social skills, problem-

solving skills, stress management, resilience and self-concept of students since these
are proven to be protective factors to prevent mental health problems such as anxiety,
depression and eating disorders as well as other risk behaviors including those that
relate to sexual behavior, substance abuse, and violent behavior regardless of gender
orientation.

OBJECTIVES:

By and large, this program aims to benefit not only the students but the
university as a whole. Driven by its vision of becoming a premiere University
