B-711 PURPOSE

The purpose of employee safety training is to establish a systematic method of teaching employees
to perform the required tasks in a safe and efficient manner. There are four primary objectives in
employee safety training:

0 To teach employees hazard recognition and methods of corrective action.


0 To involve employees in accident prevention.
0 To motivate employees to accept their safety responsibilities.
0 To provide employees information on accident causes, occupational health hazards, and accident
prevention methods.

B-712 EMPLOYEE SAFETY TRAINING

The following training topics are ongoing and must be conducted each State Fiscal Year (July 1-June
30):

0 Rights and responsibilities of the employee
0 Authority and responsibilities of the supervisor
0 Safety policy/rules
0 Accident and near miss accident reporting procedures
0 Job safety analysis
0 Accident experience and trends

Hazard Recognition and Control


0 Types of hazards
0 Preventive measures
0 Inspection procedures
0 Recording and reporting
0 Immediate temporary controls

Emergency First Aid Procedures


0 Recognizing first aid emergencies
0 Gaining control
0 Emergency care

Emergency Response Procedures


0 Alarm systems
0 Evacuation routes
0 Fire extinguisher training

B-713 LESSON PLAN

Develop a lesson plan for each training session. A complete lesson plan should include the following:

0 Title: Clearly identifies the topic.


0 Objectives: States what the trainee should know or be able to do at the end of the training period.
A well-written objective limits the subject matter, is specific, and stimulates thinking on the subject.
0 Estimated Time of Instruction: States the length of the training session. Ample time should be
allowed to thoroughly cover the subject.
0 Materials: States material to be used in training including equipment, tools, charts, slides, film,
etc.
0 What the Instructor Will Do: Gives the plan of action. Indicates the method of teaching (lecture,
demonstration, class discussion, etc.). Provides directions for instructor (show chart, write key
words on chalkboard, etc.)
0 What the Employee Will Do: Indicates how employees will apply the material in the training
session.
0 Evaluation: Establishes an assessment method (test, discussion, demonstration) for determining
whether the training objectives are achieved.
0 Assignment: Provides employees an opportunity to apply the material on the job.
