withdraws bill that
sparked protests
KELVIN CHAN
The Associated Press

HONG KONG — Hong

Kong authorities on
Wednesday withdrew an
unpopular extradition bill
that sparked months of
chaotic protests that have
since morphed into a cam-
paign for greater demo-
cratic change.
Secretary for Security
John Lee told the semi-au-
tonomous Chinese city’s
legislature that the gov-
ernment had suspended
the bill because it had re-
sulted in “conflicts in soci-
ety.”
In order to clearly spell
out the government’s posi-
tion, “I formally announce
the withdrawal of the
bill,” Lee told lawmakers.
Pro-democracy lawmak-
ers immediately tried to
question him but he re-
fused to respond.
There are no signs that
the withdrawal of the bill
would dampen the pro-
tests, now in their fifth
month. The rallies have
snowballed into the city’s
biggest political crisis in
decades, expanding to
demands for universal suf-
frage and an investigation
into allegations of police
abuses, most recently in-
cluding the spraying of a
mosque and bystanders
with high-pressure blue-
dyed water from an urban
assault vehicle.

STARKVILLE — While
the rumors regarding Mis-
sissippi State football coach
Joe Moorhead and the va-

Rutgers have begun to heat
up of late, those within the
walls of the Bulldog pro-
gram are not concerned.
Speaking with the media
Tuesday, a number of play-
ers were asked about Moor-
head’s status with MSU and
what he has said regarding
the rumors.
“It’s funny to him if any-

back Garrett Shrader said.
“He’s not leaving an SEC

told me that multiple times.
‘We’re going to win an SEC

his message to me.”
“There’s always going to

STARKVILLE — The son of Mississippi State
women’s basketball coach Vic Schaefer is facing felony
charges for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in
College Station, Texas.
Charles Logan Schaefer, 24, was arrested Sunday
after a reported road rage incident according to The
Bryan-College Station Eagle.
Schaefer allegedly got into a dispute with a motor-
cyclist regarding each others driving around 3:40 p.m.
During the argument, police said Schaefer drew a gun
on the unnamed motorcyclist.
The motorcyclist went on to follow Schaefer’s
pickup until police arrived.
According to jail records, Schaefer’s bond was set
at $10,000. He was released Monday.
Per Schaefer’s LinkedIn profile, he graduated from
MSU in 2018 and has worked as a sports marketing
assistant at Texas A&M — where he is also studying
for a masters degree in sports management — since
September 2019.
Schaefer’s father, Vic, has been the head women’s
basketball coach at MSU since March 2012. During his
seven-year tenure, the Bulldogs have twice reached the
national title game.
Vic Schaefer did not respond to The Dispatch’s
request for comment Tuesday.
