HIGH RATE OF UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG GRADUATES

In Malaysia, there are graduates remain unemployed that need more concern by the

government because it have become a serious case in Malaysia. Compared to male there are

more female graduates in this country were unemployed because they lacked the relevant skills

required in labour market despite having excellent academic results. The research stated that

being a university graduate no longer guarantees individual’s a job nowadays (Leo)1. As the

number of graduates continues to climb each year, students are facing tough competition amidst

a shaky economy.

So what is the factor of high rate of unemployment among graduates? One of the

greatest reason is graduates is said being too choosy in applying for work (Omar)2. They only

want to work in field they had study. They do not want to try something that is different from

their field. Other factors are unrealistic salary, lack of skills in communication and English

language, poor character and attitude and does not have required skills that need for a job. It

was also said that lack of experience is among the factor of high rate of employment because

mostly employer need a person who expert and professional in job (Leong)3.

1 Michelle stated that every year, over 290 000 students graduate but unfortunately 1 out of 5 remain
unemployed.
2 Human Resources Minister Dato’ Sri Richard Riot Anak Jaem said too choosy attitude of the citizens

of this country, especially graduate unemployment has caused problems occur.

3 The high unemployment rate among youth is partly due to the lack of job experience and insufficient

skills or education to compete in labor market.

HANIM 2

The effect of unemployment among graduates for individual is the individuals will be

in poverty and in debts due to the inability to pay up their lives and will lead to inability to

support family members. They would be thinking of possible ways, legally or illegally, to get

money in order to support their expenses. Other than that, government need to pay benefits to

the unemployment to support their financial (Burdo). 4

The solution to reduce the high rate of unemployment in Malaysia is of course, to create

a new job. An increase in economic growth is enough to create the jobs needed to prevent high

unemployment. The quality of education in schools and universities should be improved. The

current education system is not up to the level. Government should keep updated about the

education system and prepare the graduates with skills needed when in industries

(Viswanathan)5. Government should select a committee to look after the schools and

universities so that the education system is under control and same as planned.

4 When there is unemployment, the governments have to steps in and pay for the unemployment
benefits.
5 Government should keep a strict watch on the education system level and try to implement new

ways to generate skilled labor force.
