Appreciating Gifts from God

By Elisha Ishaal, 11th Grade

After Yaakov Avinu took his family across the river, the pasuk says “Vayivaser Yaakov Levado”- that he remained alone. Rashi
comments and says he remained alone because he went to retrieve some small jugs he left behind. Rabbi Zelig Pliskin (in Growth
Through Torah) quotes the Biurai Hamekubalim Beniglah in which the Arizal is cited to have said that Yaakov Avinu’s reasoning was
that he realized everything Hashem gave him was indispensable for his welfare and could not be wasted. The lesson we can learn from
this is amazing, as many think that they have the right to treat their possessions however they wish. However, it’s not right to do this, as
we learn from Yaakov Avinu that everything we own is a gift from Hashem, and He wouldn’t give these gifts to us unless they were ab-
solutely necessary to help us live our lives. We must learn to truly appreciate what Hashem has created for this world, for everything is
for our own benefit. This lesson can also be learned from David Hamelech who disrespected Shaul’s clothing (by cutting off a corner of
his cloak) and in the end of his life lacked the ability to enjoy the warmth provided by clothing. Though clothing are inanimate objects
and don’t have feelings, one still may not disrespect them, as by doing so he destroys Hashem’s precious gifts.
When we understand that everything Hashem gave us is for our own benefit, we can also understand that Hashem has given us
only that which we absolutely need and that we need no more. When Yaakov Avinu and Esav met and Esav wished to decline the gifts
Yaakov sent him, he said “yesh li rav”-I have a lot. In response Yaakov insisted Esav take the gifts saying “yesh li kol” – I have every-

lack a vital neccesity. Though it may seem that we can always use more, if we fail to receive that which we want, then it isn’t necessary
for us to have. And that could be why one of the Aseres HaDibros is the prohibition of jealousy: because, though it is an emotion hard to
control, we must learn that is basically claiming you don’t appreciate what Hashem has given you, because you know better than Hashem
and know that He did not give you enough (which is probably one of the most disrespectful things a person can say to Hashem).
Therefore a person must always learn and appreciate that all of our resources are gifts of Hashem and not products of our own
efforts. If we needed less then Hashem would give us less. We should also learn that we must use and not waste that which we have
(whether it is money, genius, charisma, a good voice, etc…). This is a paramount lesson we can learn from Yaakov Avinu and if one
truly ponders upon this it would be more difficult to fall in aveiros or bad middos and easier to do mitzvos while living a life of Avodas
Hashem.
