GETTING FIT: Club Champion comes

to Long Island

By John J. Glozek, Jr.

Having been in the golf business

for almost three decades I have
come up with two main conclusions
— not enough people take lessons
and everyone should have a club
fitting session on a regular basis
(every couple of years). After all, if
the best golfers in the world do this,
shouldn’t everyone?
I recently had the opportunity to
head out to the Club Champion fa-
cility in Hackensack for an extensive
club fitting (this was prior to the
opening of their Long Island loca-
tion). I had a wonderful experience.
Getting fit with the proper driver
was well worth the trip. I’m hitting
longer and straighter, and feeling
more confident when I tee it up than
ever before. While golfers certainly
need to consider taking lessons, be-
ing custom fit for clubs should also
be a priority.
What is really significant about get-
ting fit (your clubs, that is – the gym
is another story) is that there are tens
of thousands of combinations and
the only way to find the right clubs
is to work with a professional fitter.
With today’s technology, you can get
your equipment dialed in to improve
your game for peak performance.
Golfing Magazine recently sat down
with Club Champion club fitter Hiro-
shi Okada to discuss the launch of its
new location inside the John Ondrush
Golf & Fitness Academy and the con-
cept of club fitting.

JG: Let me get right to it.

Why should someone get fit?

H: Many golfers use ill-fit-

ted equipment, adjusting their
swing to the club. It should
be the other way around – fit
the club to the golfer. Use the
swing they have and match
the equipment to that.
For example, if you were to
swing a club, it feels one way to
you and that exact same club
will feel different to me. The
golf swing is like a fingerprint –
it is different for everybody. To
maximize a golfer’s swing, they
should be fitted properly.
When you get fit, you get
better. Golf Digest followed a
group of Club Champion cus-
tomers and found that 8 out of
9 added an average of 21 yards
off the tee and lowered their
scores by as much as 6 strokes
per round. Whether you are
scratch golfer or a high handi-

DUAL
CHALLENGE,
DUAL
SUCCESS
By Eileen McCaffrey

Golfing Magazine sat down with Eileen McCaffrey, who has the
challenging dual role of General Manager and Head Pro at two of
Long Island’s finest public courses – The Links and The Woods at
Cherry Creek in Riverhead.

Let’s start with your ‘golfing’ story –

How and when did golf become a part of your life?
Well, I was born and raised in Queens, moved to New
Jersey when I was 15 and moved back to New York
when I was 19. I worked at MetLife Insurance for 21
years … and didn’t actually start to play golf until I
was 30. My then-husband and I lived in Brooklyn and
we went to the driving range – and I was as bad as
many people are when they first start. Ground balls
… but I was persistent. I wanted to learn the game,
so I read books including Jack Nicklaus’
‘Golf My Way’ which I read over and over on the train.
Over the course of time, I did get better. I moved
to Suffolk County to a condo complex that had
an Executive 9-hole course, and I joined their La-
dies League. That was 1991, and my game really
improved. I won the Ladies Championship there,
and friends began asking me if I could help them
with their game. At the time, I was still working at
MetLife. It became very apparent to me that I was
not only in love with golf, but also with teaching
the game.

So, you eventually left your job and made golf a

career. Easier said than done?
Yes, exactly. MetLife was downsizing, so I left
the job and took the summer off. It was scary,
but I was determined to make this change in
my life. My first golf interview did not go well …
giving me many second thoughts about what I
was doing. But the second interview at another
course that same day went very well, and I was
hired at Woodcrest Country Club in Syosset.
Those interviews were in November in 1995 …
I couldn’t wait to get started the next spring.
I loved going to work every single day. In
January of 1997, I got a phone call from the
General Manager at Cherry Creek asking if I
wanted to come out for an interview. I
did, and got the job here – which was
a year after The Links had opened.
I started out in the pro shop as
an assistant pro. I went through the
LPGA program and became a Class A
