Diversity Unit Project – Seek by iNaturalist

The Seek app by iNaturalist is a fantastic tool for identifying unknown species in the field. The
app uses your phones camera and recognition software to identify plants, animals, and fungi as
completely as possible. As well, the app is an excellent introduction into the online community
of iNaturalist, an initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and National Geographic.
Your Tasks:
1. Create an account on Seek by iNaturalist
2. Use the app to take pictures of at least 20 different organisms in their natural
environment.
3. Use the app to identify each of the 20 different organisms down to the level of species.
4. Using internet research quickly confirm that the species has ben correctly identified by
performing a Google Image search of the proposed species.
5. For each of your 20 different organisms. create a PowerPoint slide including the
following information:
a. Your photo of the specimen
b. A title including the common name and binomial nomenclature species name of
the specimen
c. A screenshot of the Seek generated taxonomy, and range map
d. A brief description of the species based on the ‘about’ section of the Seek
section
6. BONUS: your mark will automatically be increased by 1 level gradation (ie: 4 becomes
4+) by completing the ‘Biodiversity Challenge’ available on Seek, and adding a
screenshot of your completed badge to your PowerPoint. This challenge requires:
a. 4 birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians or fish
b. 4 insects
c. 3 arachnids
d. 6 plants
e. 3 fungi
