Augmented Reality

Deborah Leal
What is Augmented Reality (AR)?

• Enhanced version of reality using technology to add digital

information on an image
• Changes the way we interact with the real world
• Combines real world content with virtual content to enhance real
world experiences

Augmented vs. Virtual Reality (VR)
• Virtual Reality
• Use of technology to create a
completely simulated
environment

• VR = complete immersion into a

virtual world
• AR = combines virtual elements
with the real world
Virtual Environments
Examples of Augmented Reality

Pokemon Go Layar
Components of
an Augmented
Reality
Experience
Augmented Reality Software
• Allows the user to design an
augmented reality experience
• Experiences can comprise of:
• Videos
• Sounds
• Websites
• 3D Simulations
• Users view the designed
interactions using the same
software
The Trigger

• Image detected through camera and recognized by augmented

reality app
The Overlay

• Images, videos, animations or 3D models that appear in response

to recognized trigger
The Aura

• Trigger + Overlay + interactions between the two

• The “augmented reality experience”
Benefits of AR in Education
• change the location and timing of studying,
• to introduce new and additional ways and methods.
• make classes more engaging and information more apprehendable.
• potential of combining smartphones and Augmented Reality
• grant students extra digital information about any subject, and make
complex information easier to understand.
Uses for AR in Education
• Request for academic advising triggered by
image
• Classroom virtual tour triggered by image
• “How-to” videos triggered by lab equipment
• Video solution to a Math Problem triggered
by equation
• 3D models triggered by 2D images
(simulations)
• Video triggered by textbook image to
increase interactivity
• Interactive Student Projects
Specific Use Cases
Augmented Reality classroom
• Catch students’ attention
• Adding extra data, e.g. a short bio of a
person, fun facts, historical data about
sites or events, visual 3D models
• give students a wider understanding of
topics.
• Homework: scan certain elements of a
book and receive text, audio or video tips
from teachers.
• Find useful information about the course,
a teacher or other students which could
lead to better communication.
Specific Use Cases
Explain abstract and difficult concepts
• Render objects that are hard to imagine
and turn them into 3D models, thus
making it easier to grasp abstract and
difficult content.
• Good for visual preference learners to
translate theoretical material into a real
concept.
• Ex.: Polytechnic Institute of Leiria in
Portugal integrates AR into math lessons
and students report it as helpful, easy and
interesting.
Specific Use Cases
Engagement and interaction
• Involve students into the process with 3-
dimensional models.
• Support of the main topic with extra info
from a different perspective.
• Ex. CASE transformed a school’s gym wall
into a ball game by adding Augmented
Reality layer to it; with balls thrown to hit
floating shapes
Specific Use Cases
Objects modeling
• Manual training, hand exercises, quiz
solving etc. help earn a better knowledge
of any lesson.
• AR apps for medical students may be one
of the ways to learn human anatomy,
explore more deeply.
• Augmented Reality basically means
interaction with 3D models. And you can
set the rotation, transparency, color
scheme, styles etc.
