and 19th century. After all, it’s clear from some
of the road names - Colliery Green etc that coal
was mined in the area. Now, a book has been
published by local author Anthony Annakin
Smith which examines Neston’s mining past.

Neston Primary School’s
Rotakids group were
award winners at ‘The
West Cheshire Youth and
Community Awards’,
recently.
The group were
presented with the
‘Partnership Award’,
which recognised the
work done by the primary
school pupils to support
charities, and good
causes, locally, nationally
and internationally.
Three pupils represented
the school’s Rotakids
group at the awards
ceremony, which was
held in Middlewich.
The Rotakids group has
raised money for a wide
range of charities over the
past months and years,
including - Wirral Riding
for the Disabled, Cancer
Research UK, Northern
Lights, End Polio, as well
as delivering hampers to
Hallwood Court, collecting
items for a school in

for a local food bank and

Halloween market
Neston Town Council will be holding
their Halloween Market on Friday 1st
November.
Traders will be in Halloween fancy
dress and, as usual, they will be
holding a competition amongst the
market traders for the best carved
pumpkin and decorated stall. The
competition will be judged by Neston’s
Mayor, Cllr Dominic Roberts, and
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Christine Warner.
The event will incorporate ‘Foodie
Friday’ with the market basement
food hall full of Artisan Traders.
There will be free face painting for
children, a children’s Halloween/
Autumn biscuit decorating activity,
the Girl Guides will have a children’s
craft activity with glitter tattoos and
entertainment will be provided by the

 Book looks at town’s mining past
A new book which explores the mining history of Neston has been
penned by a local author.
Anthony Annakin-Smith will launch the book at the next Burton
and Neston History Society (BNHS) meeting.
The book, ‘The Neston Collieries, 1759-1855; An Industrial
Revolution in Rural Cheshire’, tells the story of the early collieries
at Neston.
They were remarkable in many ways.
They were the first large industrial
site in west Cheshire and saw
extraordinary acts of sabotage
by one mine owner against
another. Digging was carried out under the Dee
Estuary and underground canals were made to
transport the coal. Child labour was routine and many
men and children died in accidents. Famous names
such as the engineer George Stephenson and Emma,
Lady Hamilton (Nelson’s future mistress) were connected
with the mines.

 CRIMEFILE
Crimes reported to Neston police include:
Whitegates Crescent – A Fiat Ducati Motorhome was stolen
from a driveway.
Liverpool Road – The front and rear registration plates were
stolen from a Vauxhall Vectra.
Chester High Road – Youths used a catapult to fire stones at
the windscreen of a lorry at the Aldi Distribution Centre. It was
the third incident in as many days where delivery vehicles have
been targeted in and around this area.
Briardale Road – Thieves took an ornamental lamppost from a garden.
Derwent Way – A brick which was thrown at the rear window of VW Caddy, bounced off
and damaged a Skoda Fabia, parked next to it.
Chester High Road – Two Scania tractor units were damaged after rocks were thrown
at the windscreen.
Mill View – A Mini Countryman was taken after the keys were obtained during a
burglary.
Leighton Road – Two boxes of eggs were taken from an egg stall at Old Oaks Farm but
no payment was left in the honesty box.
Hawkins Road – A toolbox was taken during a shed break-in.
Marshlands Road – A door was damaged after thieves tried and failed to break in.

Lucas Sibeon is the new Junior Mayor for Neston.
Lucas will accompany the town’s mayor or deputy to various events throughout the course
of the school year.
The Mayor, Cllr Dominic Roberts, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Christine Warner, visited Lucas at
Parkgate Primary School recently and attended the weekly special achievement assembly
where they presented Lucas with his Junior Mayor badge.

Transport issues are

top of the agenda
I managed to get some time off over the summer but since then have been working hard
both for the borough in my leaders roll and as ward councillor.
I was particularly pleased to get to speak in the House of Commons at a new all-party
parliamentary group looking at Transport Across the North and spoke about the problems
residents have (in Neston) of getting from A to B if they want to use public transport.
I have made a commitment of travelling to all the Transport for the North meetings by
public transport. The one journey that was most frustrating was from home to Manchester
Airport, I could drive there in 45 minutes (on a good day) but the train journey (including
getting to the station) would take me over 2 hours. I raised this point as an example of
the challenges that many people face outside of the big cities. I’m meeting Liverpool city
region mayor Steve Rotherham this month to look at how we can work more closely with
the City region in particular with regards to public transport: watch this space.
On a ward level I’ve been helping residents to tidy up their areas: in Ness our Highways
team volunteered to do up the much-loved bus shelter and I will be working with residents
and our Street Care team, over the winter, to create a wildflower verge down Well lane.
A resident contacted me a couple of weeks ago about a messy bit of green space between
Foxglove way and tree Tops in Little Neston so we went out with our new ‘Assist team” and
some local residents to tidy it up. It now looks smashing. If anyone has any other areas that
need a tidy up please get in touch louise.

 FRIENDS OF HADLOW STATION
Work is now starting on the Signal ladder. It will be removed and painted very shortly,
ready for replacing, which then completes this refurbishment, writes Hilary Booth
The white line painting and window painting have been put on hold until spring 2020
when the weather will hopefully be more suitable to undertake these jobs.
Gardening days have been a big success and the gardens are looking particularly good.
Trees have been trimmed where needed, and new bushes planted.
250 daffodil bulbs are to be planted on the car park embankment and also by the new
fence that separates the platform from the Wirral Way at the Hooton side, which will
provide some bright colour in the springtime.
Many thanks to all of the gardeners who have worked so hard.
The next garden day will be Wednesday 6th November from 10am – 12noon. Volunteers
will be rewarded with coffee and a chocolate biscuit!
We are now in full swing preparing for Santa’s Grotto on Sunday 8th December from
12noon until 4pm.
If you would like a ticket to see Santa then please contact Hilary on 327 8325. All tickets
cost £4 and include mulled wine/coffee/tea and a mince pie for adults, or a present from
Santa and a gingerbread biscuit and soft drink for children. There will be entertainment
provided throughout the afternoon. There will be music and a choir for the adults. There
will be face painting and a balloon man for the children, and the steam train will be going
around the car park for both adults and children!
In the New Year we will be getting a static “Hadlow Road Station model railway” (for
permanent display) which we will be putting inside the signal box so that it can be on
visual display from the signal box platform.
The weather has not been too wonderful over the last couple of pop-up-cafe days but we
have still had a really good number of people coming for their bacon baps and coffee. So
thank you to all our loyal customers.
The next cafe openings will be from 10.30am to 1.30pm on 10th and 24th November.

 Christmas party and grotto
Little Actors Theatre in Neston will be having a very special visitor to their Grotto at L A
Theatre in Brook Street, Neston. Children and their families are warmly invited to meet Santa
in his grotto on Saturday 14th December 12.30-3.30pm. In a very special Christmas party,
the children can come dressed up and activities include: visiting Santa, lunch, Christmas sing
along, crafts, party games, storytelling and festive music.
Tickets are £5 per child and adults come for free, and are available from Little Actors in
Brook Street and Paisley Grey on Neston High Street. Proceeds go towards supporting the
community arts activities in Neston and the scholarship scheme we offer.

CHURCH MICE PLAY GROUP
Neston Methodist Church. Thursdays 9.30 for 9.45 start-
11.30am during Term-time. Babies,toddlers and preschool
with parents or carers welcome. Sing along session,
search for knitted mice, Bible story, craft activity, play time
and refreshments. £1.50 per family
PARKGATE JAZZ CLUB
Jazz sessions are held at the Old Quay, Parkgate,
every Tuesday starting at 8.30pm.The 6 piece Parade
Jazz Band plays a broad spectrum of traditional and
mainstream tunes from their extensive repertoire
gathered over 25 years of playing there. The atmosphere
is warm and friendly and there is a raffle to support the
band’ - so why not come along, join in the fun and enjoy
the music.
NESTON PROBUS CLUB
The club meets monthly at Neston Cricket Club for
lunch with a speaker and also has bowls and snooker
sections and outings. The club is friendly and is for retired

their ‘Outdoor day’ where pupils do their learning
