FIGURE 1.87 The boost converter circuit.

The PV panel output current (IPV ) can be controlled by controlling the converter current
(IC ). This can be done by current mode control of the boost converter.

1.9.1.1.1 State-Space Model of the Boost Converter

Using the averaging method, two different circuits for the on and off positions of the switch
can be derived and averaged. When the switch is in the “on” position, the circuit is a parallel
CL circuit, and
dIC
Lp = VPV . (1.80)
dt

When the switch is off, it is an open circuit; thus the inductor current charges the
battery.
dIC
Lp = VPV − Vb . (1.81)
dt

Equations 1.82 and 1.83 can be averaged based on the duty cycle, d, as

dIC
Lp = VPV − (1 − d)Vb = VPV − Vb + dVb . (1.82)
dt

The block diagram given in Figure 1.88 is the implementation of Equation 1.84.

1.9.1.1.2 Current Controller

A proportional (P) or a proportional-integral (PI)-type controller can be applied to con-
trol the current of the boost converter. The control scheme of the boost converter with a
proportional control is shown in Figure 1.89.
