The Effects of Addiction to Games on Grade 7 Students: A Qualitative Study

Introduction

In the advent of technology, people were enraptured by digital entertainment such as games.
Games were used to have fun and release the stresses of life. However, there are those who played way
too excessively than they should have and it is causing them to neglect their responsibilities. This is called
game addiction. And, this type of addiction is much more common in the youth and students are no
exception.

In this study we hope to identify the effects of games on students, both academically and socially,
and how to lessen the negative effects.

Background of the Study

We have noticed that a significant percent of students are addicted to games and some appeared
to have performed poorly in academic and social activities. Therefore, we decided to conduct this study.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to identify the effects of games on grade 7 students through the following
questions:

 Do games affect the performance of students in school?

 How do games affect the students' social life?
 Do games improve the intelligence of students?
 How do games affect the students' mentality?

Research Assumption

Games can cause students to neglect their respective duties, which then results in poor academic
performance. Playing games can also cause unrest and aggression in students.

Games, however, appeared to have enhanced players' cognitive functions such as attention span
and focus, visual processing, memory, strategic thinking and ocular precision. It is also said to have
increased players' hand to eye coordination.

Hypothesis

There is a connection to game addiction and the performance of students on their academic and
social activities.
