Vasu Says
Q: Are you waiting in vain? Does the buy & hold strategy still makes sense?
The extreme volatility in global stock markets over the past 3 years has raised questions about the wisdom of a buy
& hold investment strategy, epitomised by one of the world’s best investors, Warren Buffett.
Despite market uncertainties, we think that there is still a role for strategic or long term investments in one’s
portfolio. Time increases the probability of achieving better returns, but it is not a guarantee. Even if you start
investing with a long term view of 5 years, it does not mean that you have to stay invested for the full period.
This is where many investors get it wrong with the buy & hold strategy. They set off investing for the long term,
with a certain return in mind, but they do not take profit once their target is achieved as they get overcome by greed
and seek more gains.
In other words, buy & hold until your investment meets your targeted return. Once your target is met, be
disciplined about selling and locking in your profit. If you do not, it could wither away if markets experience a
downturn subsequently.

Sizing up the
HDB market What lies in store for HDB flat owners
in 2010? We ask two experts to share
their views.
Q: How much has HDB home prices appreciated since mid 2009?
CHOR HOON: According to HDB’s price index, average HDB resale prices have
increased by 10.6% between Q3 2009 to Q1 2010, with 3-room flats seeing a
steeper increase of 13% compared to 9 – 11% for bigger flats.
EUGENE: Since mid 2009, HDB home prices have appreciated by about 11% in
general.
Editor’s Note: We regret to inform that there was an error in the ‘Understanding Your Mortgage Loan’ article from Ask OCBC Oct – Dec 2009 issue. Based on the CPF policy, members have to set aside half of the prevailing Minimum Sum in their Ordinary and Special Accounts before they
can use further CPF savings up to the Housing Withdrawal Limit (not Available Housing Withdrawal Limit) to repay the loan. With effect from 1 Jan 2008, the Housing Withdrawal Limit (not Available Housing Withdrawal Limit) is 120% of the purchase price or valuation of the property at
the point of purchase, whichever is lower.

* Apply personally at any OCBC branch to enjoy preferential HDB Home Loan packages for a limited period. Please come with your SingPass to facilitate online retrieval of your income document(s). The original Option to Purchase and a copy of the HDB Valuation Report for the purchased
flat is also required. The HDB Home Loan packages are subject to relevant terms and conditions governing such loan packages. Offer is subject to satisfactory credit checks and approval.

boosting your
child’s memory is
as simple as
Antioxidant-rich food: Give your child more antioxidant-rich foods like apples
or apple juice! Oats during breakfast helps your child perform better because it is
high in fibre and protein, one of the foods that boost memory performance.
Books: Nurture their interest in reading and make it fun with story-telling!
Reading is about sounding out the letters and joining them into words. With
constant practice, they get familiar with the letters and the word will remain in
their mind.
Crossword puzzles: Perfect game to jog their memory and brain cells. Lateral
thinking puzzles, memory games and even riddles are a great way to get some
brain exercise. The best part is you can do them anywhere with your child!
