1. Course Objectives
1.1 Curriculum Common Objectives: In this course, you will attempt to
1. Develop good research skills through reading, discussion and critique of research articles on
various issues relevant to the component modules of the syllabus; research skills are given
importance to prepare learners for academic research (MA, PhD and postdoctoral) as well as
professional careers.
2. Develop deeper knowledge and skills for English language teaching by discussing strategies to
maximise learning;
3. Develop English proficiency: The learners are expected to reach at least a high intermediate
level in English; such proficiency is required for both teaching, research and professional purposes;
4. Develop academic modesty, tolerance and ethical attitudes that should allow learners to be
agents of development in their environment; and
5. Develop critical thinking which is especially necessary to thrive in academic and professional
environments.
At the end of this program, the learners are expected to demonstrate both declarative and procedural
knowledge of the above requirements. As much as possible, they will be asked to perform the skills
covered; the preparation and then defence of a research thesis is the main performance test to
demonstrate their research skills. Source: MA Syllabus (Didactics of Foreign Languages)
1.2 Course-Specific Objectives: The aim of this course is to develop a baseline knowledge (no
specialization is intended) about a number of issues especially related to ICT tools and teaching and
learning. At the end of this course, you should be able to
1. Demonstrate ability to describe
1.1 The key ICT tools available for learning and teaching
1.2 The opportunities offered by those technologies;
1.3 The challenges posed by them
2. Demonstrate procedural knowledge that is appropriate to use those technologies and maximize
their benefits (by moderating their challenges)
2. Work Method
2.1 The Lead In: Recollect your experience with the ICT of the day. What were you reaction,
attitude, thoughts?
2.2 Class Procedure: This class should aim to be learner-centred with the teacher acting as a
facilitator. Participants in this seminar will be assigned to readings about the selected ICTs. Students
are expected to
1. Read, understand and summarise the reading before the ICT is discussed in class;
2. Classroom work will generally revolve around the following tasks done in pairs (5-7 minutes); a
student will present his/her pair’s work to class (5 minutes) followed by a whole class discussion;
2.1 Formulating a clear and concise definition of the ICT from the reading text
2.2 Benefits and challenges of the ICT for the learner/learning and / or the teacher/teaching;
2.3 How teachers/learners can use the ICT for better learning
2.4 Critique of the reading: writing aspects
2.5 Critique of the reading: research method used by the author (objectives clear, primary data?
Validity, reliability, possibility for replication, etc.)
NB: 1. Students are encouraged to prepare their contribution related to the above tasks before class.
2. During classes, learners are expected to listen attentively and do tasks actively.
