Anatomy of Art

The artwork that we are asked to critique is a photography which consists of 2 birds
on a branch, one is holding a bee while a third bird flies towards the branch where the
other two are resting on. For me, the main theme of the picture is nature and its simplicity.
The there are several lines seen in this, for me, the lines that make up the image are the
expressive lines which are usually found in nature. Other lines are also present in the
image such as the diagonal lines on the branch which signify challenges, the vertical lines
from the posture which may signify authority of the two birds on the branch and the
horizontal lines on the wings of the bird that is flying towards the branch which signify
freedom. The image has organic shapes seen in the leaves, branches, birds, all of which
are part of nature. There are also geographic shapes such as the triangular wings of the
bird and their eyes that are cylindrical in shape. For the space, the background of the
image is green in different shades which are caused by the grassy environment where
the image was taken. The middle ground and main subject of the photography shows the
3 birds with two resting on the upper portion of the branch, one holding a bee and the the
third one flying towards the branch. The foreground shows the lower part of the branch
tilting diagonally presumable because of the weight of the birds. Positive space are the
birds, bee, branches and leaves while the negative space is the green background. The
image has a tactile texture with rough branches, smooth leaves and feathery textures of
the birds. The image generally has an analogous colour scheme consisting of green that
is found in the background, the body of the birds and leaves, yellow which is found on the
bird’s heads, black which is found on the birds’ head and their eyes and brown which is
found on the bird’s wings and head. The value at full range shows light areas in the
background that are in the shades green and yellow. The middle tones are seen in the
middle ground leaves of the branches. The last component is the form and here it is in its
actual form as it can be seen in reality.

In my own interpretation, the main subjects found in the middle ground which are
the two birds resting on the branch are adult birds which I believe is signified by the
vertical lines seen on the posture of the two birds. The third bird is a younger bird,
presumably the child of the two birds and his open wings which show horizontal lines can
represent youth and the serenity brought upon by freedom. To me, the young bird, though
he has now the freedom to fly anywhere he desires, at the end of the day he still returns
to his parents who are waiting for him to come back. The mother bird (the one on the
right) reminds me of how our mothers prepare food for us no matter how old we are, just
like how the mother bird carries a bee on her beak, I believe she was saving it for her
child who has been away. Looking at the image at first glance, to me, it is automatically
consisted of organic shapes because its main subjects are part of nature, and these
shapes signify the simplicity of life lived by the three birds. The triangular shape found on
the wings of the young flying bird to me shows how its freedom has brought peace in its
spirit, mind and body. The circular shape of the eyes to me represents their unity of the
three birds as a family, the circle also shows how the cycle of how in a family, the child
leaves when they get their freedoms but at the end of the day, even with us humans, we
always return to our families who are always there for us. The space and background
which consists of green due to the natural habitat of these birds who are living as part of
nature. The foreground which consists of the branch tilted diagonally to me shows that
there are challenges even in nature, to me, this may mean that the young bird was gone
for too long and the two parents have been searching for him, worried, thus why their
weight caused the branch to tilt diagonally. The positive space consists of our main
subjects, the family and the negative space, is the green background. The image has a
tactile texture which can be seen on the rough branches, smooth leaves and feathery
textures of the birds, these are descriptions based on the actual feeling of these birds,
plants and other objects because they are real, captured from real life events and are
very organic and natural. The analogous colour scheme of the image consisting first of
green may signify life in nature as it makes up majority of the photograph and and the
main subjects which are the birds. Green to me may also signify family, health and
harmony. The colour yellow, neighbour of green, is found on the bird’s heads, this may
signify joy, and to me this is because the three birds are happy that they are finally
reunited as a family. The colour brown though also represents nature, to me it also brings
out the feel of trust and reliability of the three birds. The value at full range shows light
areas in the background that are in the shades green and yellow, which signifies a positive
and vibrant feel of the image. The middle tones are seen in the middle ground leaves of
the branches. The last component is the form and here it is in its actual form as it can be
seen in reality. For me, the main purpose of this image is recording appearances, and the
main focus the photographer may have wanted to capture and express is the joy and
unity of the three birds as a family.
