18 0 3 3 6

19 1 2 3 6

20 0 1 1 2

Total 30 20 50 100

As shown from the table, age 17 has the highest number of respondents with 24 or 48%

of the 50 total respondents while age 20 has the least number of respondents with 1 or 2%.

This is for the reason that the majority of our respondents were senior high school students

whose age range from 17.

1.3 Social networking sites (Largest number of users)

Items Grade 11 Grade 12 Total %

Facebook 21 23 44 88

Instagram 1 0 1 2

Others 0 0 0 0

As shown from the table, Facebook has the largest number of users with 44 or 88% out

of the 50 total respondents while twitter, snapchat, pinterest and tumblr got zero response.

This was supported by the study of Bedassa (2014), that facebook has the largest number of

users with over 500 million active users.

1.4 Time spent on social media

Items Grade 11 Grade 12 Total %

1-3 hours 12 19 31 62

4-6 hours 7 4 11 22

7-9 hours 6 1 7 14

10 hours & more 0 1 1 2

As shown from the table, time spent on social media sites was majorly 1-3 hours with 31

or 62 % while only 1 or 2% answered 10 hours and more out of the 50 total respondents. In

the broadbandSearch.net, as of 2019, the average time spent on social networking site was

projected as 153 minutes per day or 2 hours and 33 minutes.

1.5 Usages of social media

As shown from the table, the primary usage of social media among students was

chatting with 21 or 42% respondents while 6 or 12 % answered downloading of videos and

pictures that got the lowest percentage of the 50 total respondents. This contradicts the

findings of Dewing (2010), in which he stated that students use social media to meet their

educational needs.

1.6 Reasons behind social media addiction

Items Grade 11 Grade 12 Total %

Need to be connected with others 15 18 33 66

increase

Others 1 0 1 2

behind spending huge amount of time on social media with 33 or 66% out of 50 total

respondents while only 3 or 6% answered for feeding their ego that got the lowest percentage.

This means that the need to belong is what the students need. This was supported by the

findings of Bedassa (2014), the reason why students spend huge amount of time on social

media was because of connection towards other people and the feeling of belongingness.

positive effects of social media on their academic performance was to widen their vocabulary

knowledge with 22 or 44 % while only 2 or 4% answered that it improves their writing skills.

This was supported by the statement of Yunus and Salehi (2012), that trough social media,

students gained more vocabulary.

1.8 Negative effects of social media on the academic performance of students.

Items Grade 11 Grade 12 Total %

Poor grammar spelling 1 0 1 2

Others 1 0 1 2

As shown from the table, less study time was mainly the negative effect of social media

with 22 or 44% out of 50 total respondents while only 1 or 2% answered poor grammar

spelling. This was supported by the findings of Boogart (2006), that excessive use of social

media lowers students GPAs.

Research Methodology

Research Design

The study used the quantitative method of research. Descriptive research design was

utilized to gain accurate profile of situation.

The target respondents for this research were the fifty students from Senior High School

at GNTS who form the major chunk of users of social networking sites.

Sampling Technique

Purposive sampling method was used to select the respondents.

Data Gathering Tool

This research was carried out through a questionnaire. The questionnaire was well

structured and the responses were sought from the respondents. The nature of the questions
