Chapter I
Introduction

Eggshells is the protective layer protecting the offspring of chickens, ducks and other
birds that lay eggs. The part inside the eggshell is edible and contains proteins that
nourish the human body. But in most cases the eggshell is thrown away, according to a
website named healthline.com, eggshells contain calcium and protein aside to that they
also contain other minerals like strontium and magnesium. We may be missing out this
source of calcium. But what happens when eggshells are put into plants? Since plants
need calcium in their growth and nutrition, it also helps maintain chemical balance in the
soil, reduces soil salinity and improves water penetration, all of this contribute to the
growth of plants, making the plant sprout faster and maintain its healthy status. In this
Investigatory Project, the researchers experimented with tomato seeds and eggshells to
test out whether there is a difference in a plant with and without eggshells.

Statement of the Problem

1. Can eggshells aid in plant growth?

Hypothesis

1. Putting eggshells in plants can increase growth compared to plants without eggshells

2. Eggshells can act as a natural fertilizer to plants

Significance of the Study

If all goes well in this Investigatory Project, we will have alternative ways to make plant
growth faster to boost a certain business economically and to increase productivity in
plant and crop production.

Scope and Limitations

The general budget of this Investigation ranges from 70 pesos 100 pesos depending of
the quantity and quality of the materials used. Some equipment used in this project can
be found in the Home.

Techniques involve performing the correct method placing the eggshells in the soil for
the plants to absorb calcium. This Investigatory Project needs a human force of 2 - 5
personnel.

Limitations of the Study

The study is limited only to the placing of the eggshells in plants to find out if it affects
plant growth. Its limitations are those events, things, etc. that are outside of the scope of
this study.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

According to a study of The National Institute of Health, eggshells might be an ideal

covering for skin graft dressings due to properties of wound protection, pain relief, and
promotion of healing. (Source: National Institute of Health)

Chapter III
Methodology

Raw Materials:

8 - 14 Eggshells

Other Materials:

Plant Pots (2 pieces)

Procedure

1. Crush the eggshells to form small pieces

2. Bath the egg shells in sunlight to dry for 4-8 hours.
3. Spread the eggshells in the soil in one pot and leave it for about a day, do not put
eggshells in the second pot.

4. Moisturize the soil to boost germination in seeds

5. Put tomato seeds at the center of first pot with eggshells, do the same procedure in
the second pot without eggshells
6. Observe for several days

The first step we took some shells, and crushed them into small pieces, the we dried it
for the whole afternoon, after drying we spread the eggshells into one pot, leaving the
other pot free from eggshells, we did this to further observe plant growth in a pot with
and without eggshells, we sprinkled the pots with water to moisturize the soil to allow
faster germination, and after a few minutes we placed the seeds in the center at a depth
about a quarter of an inch. The mentioned above was done on May 5, 2019, then we
observed for fourteen days. Except days 6, 7 and 8 because we were out of town and
couldn’t make observations.

Presentation of Data, Analysis, Interpretation of Data and Results

As seen in Table 1 below, we performed the experiment with only one attempt, since
the results of Attempt one are satisfactory.

Table 2 is the data of the Materials and Cost Production the researchers used and
bought in performing the experiment.

Chapter V
Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

Summary
The researchers wanted to find a way of how use eggshells in the field of agriculture
and in plant use, they also wanted to know the effects of eggshells in plant growth by
crushing the eggshells, and spreading it into one pot while leaving the other pot free
from eggshells. The study is conducted to attempt to use eggshells and observing for 9
days in boosting plant growth, especially in tomatoes

Conclusion

In the setups and treatments the researchers conducted different opinions,

the researchers pinpointed that the use of eggshells in Tomatoes has a significant effect
in its growth and therefore it can help a person or a farmer to use the method in order to
boost productivity and plant production in growing crops.

Recommendation

Base on the findings of the researchers, they want to recommend if you are trying to
attempt this project, always look after the plant and observe its changes every day to tell
whether there is a change or not, failure to look after the plants will result to inaccurate
data and observation and chances are the plant will not survive.
