POEM INTERPRETATION CONTEST MECHANICS

Description:
This contest aims at encouraging the use of English language through meaning, sound, and rhythmic
language of pupils. It builds confidence in pupils to memorize, speak, and express themselves.

Mechanics:
o This contest is open to Grade 1 - 3 pupils enrolled in the school year 2019-2020.
o The contest pieces are “Little Things” by Julia A. Carney for Grade 1, “The Star” by Jane Taylor for
Grade 2, and “All Things Bright and Beautiful” by Cecil Frances Alexander for Grade 3.
o Each section will choose 1 representative who will recite and interpret the poem. The student can use
simple costumes for the presentation.
o This will serve as their performance task in Reading and Language for the Third Quarter, thus, everyone
has the chance to be chosen as a representative for each section.
o Each participant will be given a maximum of 3 minutes for the presentation.
o Electronic instruments, aside from the microphone, will NOT be allowed.
o The piece should be memorized by the students.
o The decision of the judges will not be subject to appeal of the audience and will be made public at the
end of the program proper.
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:
 On-stage Performance (Actions) ………………………40%

o It is understood that the participants in this contest fully accepts and adheres to the rules and regulations
as aforementioned.
o There will only be 1 winner per grade level. The winners will receive a trophy and certificates of
recognition.
Phase II: Poem Recitation

1. Stage presence and presentation -

50%
2. Poise and spontaneity of recitation -
30%
3. Intonation, poetic expression and a clear insight into the poet’s intention -
10%
4. Clarity of spoken words and diction -
10%
