Evolution of Pharmacy

1) Contribution of Spain in the Pharmacy Practice

- In 1995, the General Pharmaceutical Council of Spain published “Spanish Rules

for Good Pharmacy Practice”. This was based on the guidelines by the
International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 1993. In this, the requirements
for a correct professional practice in Spain is stated, including its most suitable way
to attain it.

2) Spanish influences in the Pharmacy practice in the Philippines

- In 1565, the Spaniards constructed the Military Hospital in Cebu under the
command of Miguel López de Legazpi.
- In 1830, a small apothecary shop was built in Escolta, Manila by Don Lorenzo
Negrao.
- In 1861, Botica de Santa Cruz (Farmacia y Drogueria D. Pablo Schuster) was
installed.
- In 1871, Faculty of Pharmacy was established at the University of Santo Tomas.
- In 1879, the school of “Practicantes de Medicina y Farmacia” was founded.

made the formula for producing a pure kind of alcohol from tuba in a
nipa palm.
 Antonio Luna y Novicio
- He contributed to the leading Pharmacy scientific journals of the
day. He returned to Manila in 1894 with a commission from the
Spanish government to study the bacteriology of contagious diseases.
 Rev Fr. Lorenzo Rodriguez, OP
- He became the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy from 1946 to 1968.
He initiated the proposal of a 5-year curriculum leading to the degree
of Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry
 Dr. Joaquin M. Maranon
- He published and compiled the book “Atomic Future of the Philippines”.
 Manuel A. Zamora (Pharmacist)
- A Filipino chemist and pharmacist who is best known for the discovery
of the tiki-tiki formula against beriberi.
