Spelling Free Choice
Guidelines & Rubric
Free choice assignments are to be turned in on clean, 3 hole-punched loose-leaf paper (college or wide
ruled), SCREENSHOT’ed to submit to Google Classroom, or printed from the computer on
white paper. Assignments are to be headed in the top left corner with your full name, class number, date
and assignment title: Spelling Free Choice. Electronic versions are in the gray boxes.
Remember: Some activities are NOT iPAD FRIENDLY - those ones say *FLASH NEEDED
Poem
Write a poem using at least 10
spelling words. Highlight or
underline the words in your poem.
*On paper or Google Docs
tough ones
Pick your top 15 HARDEST words
from your list. Write them 2x then
highlite or color the part of the word
that has given you trouble.

rainbow write
Write ALL of your spelling words 2x
each in rainbow colors by letter or by
word.

sentences
Choose 12 words to put into sentences.
Underline or highlite your words. The
sentences need to be complete, start with
different beginnings for each sentence, and
have capital letters & end marks.

picture perfect
Draw a picture of each of your spelling
words. Include the WORD in the picture or
on the side. The picture should be related to
the word. You may also cut out pictures from
magazines or newspapers.
triangle words
Write your spelling words in
this adding triangle pattern.
Then draw a triangle around
the spelling word. (stay neat
and on the lines).
cursive
Write ALL of your spelling words in
cursive 2x each.

color code
Write ALL of your spelling words and
color code the CONSONANTS blue and
the VOWELS red (or choose your own
color code bu include a key).

Caption this
Cut out 7 pictures from a magazine or
newspaper and use 10 spelling words
to CAPTION or describe each picture.
COMIC STRIP
Create a cartoon strip on https://
www.makebeliefscomix.com/Comix/ for 10
spelling words. Screenshot or Print out and
turn in to Google Classroom. The cartoon can
be a story or just pictures describing the
spelling word.

QUICKLY assign a code to the alphabet and
write ALL of your spelling words using the
code. Do it by hand OR use

make them BIGGER in your word cloud by making
their SIZE bigger. Make a shape and change the
