plan: addressed in this topic?
The scarce energy resources we have in Singapore have posed a
threat in our long term survival. What can we do to prevent an
energy crisis in the future?

Learning At the end of this topic, students should be able to

Objectives: 1. Use Internet to search selectively for information and use
it as a resource for their research.
2. Construct a mind map using Mind Manager to organize
their ideas.
3. Produce a PowerPoint presentation to exhibit their
findings.
4. Share and learn from group members collaboratively.

Rationale for Using Why is the technology necessary/useful for this topic?
the Technology: 1. The most current information and techniques on local
energy profile are found in the Internet.
2. Collaboration can be done through discussion forum and
emailing.
3. Ideas and concepts can be more effectively illustrated by
the PowerPoint.

Strategies for Give details on

Implementation: 1. How ICT technology is integrated in each lesson and
2. How each lesson is integrated as a whole to fulfill the learning
objectives.
Lesson 1 (70 minutes): Knowing the energy sources in
Singapore.
The lesson starts by asking students to visit
http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/cabs/singapor.html where they
will find information as current as Nov 2002 that describes our
present energy situation together with development
undertaken by both private and governmental agencies to
address energy issues. Students are urged to explore beyond
the given content and to discuss within their groups what will
happen to our energy supply 20 years down the road and what
possible solutions we could provide to prevent a crisis from
happening. They are encouraged to apply their Information
Literacy knowledge they learnt to search for other supporting
information in the Web. They will work in groups of 4 using
Mind Manager to brainstorm for ideas. The classroom setting
will be in Half Lab with two computers for each group. One
computer is used to create mind map and the other for Internet
search. Rules and roles for brainstorming will also be briefed.
Students then save their mind maps in softcopies which will
be used for online discussion forum.

Post Lesson 1 Activity (online): Discussion Forum

After Lesson 1, students will take part in Blackboard
discussion forum. Each group will post a brief on their
findings as a new thread and their mind maps as attachments.
Members from other groups are to comment and make critical
suggestions to the posted articles. They are given a total of 3
days for the activity. The discussion will be mediated
(teacher’s facilitation) and specific issues or problems will be
addressed via emails.

2
Lesson 2 (70 minutes): Presenting Solutions On PowerPoint.
In the class, teacher gives a debriefing on the results of the
students’ online discussion. Teacher will not supply the
solution but provide scaffolds instead. He/she will guide
students by asking questions using “what if…”, “how
then ….” etc. Students then consolidate their solutions in
PowerPoint slides. They could use animation to illustrate a
particular difficult process or to use multimedia to explain
their ideas. The PowerPoint project is given a week to
complete. The work submitted will be showcased in the class
“Home Site” which is a repository of students’ past
assignments. The Home Site is meant to promote communal
learning and to foster a sense of common identity.

Student Assessment How will you assess the extent to which the students have
achieved the objectives established?
1. The structure of the mind map tells the students’
organization ability of information. The extent of the mind
map coverage measures the depth of understanding of
subject matter.
2. The discussion forum shows their participation level and
how critical they are in their thinking, and
3. The presentation reveals team effort and ability for
expression.

Further Suggestions Any advice you would like to give to other tutors when using this
plan?
E.g. considerations when using this plan on students from other
streams or in a different setting.
For classes which do not maintain a Home Site, the plan may be
modified to allow submission of PowerPoint presentation in
softcopies. Teacher may then showcase only works that are of
exemplary nature in future classroom discussion.
