ACADEMIC HONESTY
It is expected that all the materials submitted for this course are the actual work of the individual
whose name appears on the materials. Violations of academic honesty include but are not limited to
cheating, plagiarism, copying answers and passing it as your own work, storing notes on a
calculator, and receiving or giving help on assessments.
We all will learn as a cooperative group. I want you to help each other with homework problems
and present difficult problems to the class. Most students develop a small study group to provide
each other help. Such support is great. However, help ceases when you hand someone your paper
to copy. He/she may copy your paper without your knowledge, but this does not excuse you from
the same penalty as the copier.
I consider it cheating to tell someone which problem types to study for the test
or what information to be sure to know. Notes and formulas in a graphing
calculator are cheat-sheets just as if you had written on the back of your hand.
Getting out of your seat during a quiz or exam to just get a glance to see how to
start the problem means you are no longer doing your own work. I consider it
wrong whether you give or receive help in inappropriate situations. Please
conduct yourself accordingly and err on the side of the morally correct action.
That will be of far greater consequence and satisfaction.
I would expect all students, much less those enrolled in an AP mathematics course, to live by the
above guidelines. You are competing with yourself in my class. In the end, no one will remember
what grade you earned here. What will be remembered will be your deeds and actions and the way
you handle yourself in various situations, and these will become the defining moments by which you
will be known. No one can steal good character and integrity from you.
Character and integrity are yours to build and yours to lose and
will follow you long after the mathematics is gone.
If you need proof, check your college application recommendation forms. Most no longer just ask
me what grade was earned in my class, but now also ask me if I have been given any reason to
suspect the applicant’s character or integrity. Please do not give any other person or me a reason to
suspect your integrity.
My hope for you is that you have a good year and learn great things, including
a little mathematics along the way.
