Problem 3 (15 points). The plastic rod is L=200 mm long and 15 mm in diameter. In an axial load
ofP of300N is applied to it, (1). Determine the change in its length and the change in its
diameter. Modules of elasticity is E =3.00GPa, Poisson ratio is v = 0.3. The deformation is linear
elastic. (2). When P is zero (no load is applied), determine the change in length when the
temperature raise from 60°F to 120°F(ifthe coefficient of thermal expansion is 6.60(10-6)/OF).

Problem 4 (25 points). The steel rod shown in the Figure has a diameter of 10 mm. It is fixed to
the wall at A, and before it is loaded, there is a gap of 0.35 mm between the wall at B' and the
rod. Determine the reactions at A and B' if the rod is subjected to an axial force ofP = 25 KN as
shown. Neglect the size of the collar at C. Take Est=200 GPa.
