INDIAN CONTEMPORARY
ARCHITECTURE.

Origin of Deconstructivism in Architecture.
• Jacques derrida a French philosopher . He
developed the critical theory known as
deconstruction and his work has been labeled as
post structuralism and associated with post
modern philosophy.
• The idea was to develop building which show
how differently from traditional architectural
conventions building can be built without lossing
their utility and still complying with the
fundamental laws of physics.
Jacques derrida
1934-2004
• “It is not simply the technique of an architect
who knows how to deconstruct what has been
constructed but a probing which touches upon
the technique itself, upon the authority of the
architectural metaphor and thereby constitutes
its own architectural rhetoric. (Derrida, 1986)”

CHARCTERISTIC OF DECONSTRUCTIVISM….
• Explodes architectural form into loose collections of related
fragments.
• Use ideas and images from Russian Revolutionary architecture
and design.
• Rejects the ideas of PERFECT FORM for a particular activity
and rejects the relationship between certain forms and
activities.

Aim :- To find a fusion between Indian contemporary architecture and
deconstructivism in Indian contexts.
fusion
Objectives:-
To study the work of international architects who have practiced the
concept and narrow down to keywords that describe the concept best.
To study the Indian architects structure who are following this movement
but not been labelled.
To study the deconstructivist buildings in India – observe, analyse and
perform a comparative study.
To study the new construction techniques as well as material texture which

will be brought from foreign countries.
Need of this topic?....
• Post modernism was a movement that give birth to other by
product movement like deconstructivism this concept involved
a number of monumental buildings in India.
• In India this movement of style has not been marked at this
stage. This research topic give us a opportunity to be creative
and explore with forms, structural and material texture. There
is no such labelled deconstructivist building in India. To make
awareness in this present designer industry about this
movement after post modernism era.

Deconstructivism in Indian context…..
• Charles Correa’s Hindustan Lever Pavilion is an early example displaying a
striking fragmentation of space, and the Tillany Museum, Bangalore, by
Inform Architects, may be cited as a conscious effort at deconstruction, but
otherwise, built examples of deconstructivist architecture in India are rare.
• Building technology and skill available in India is probably not favourable to
such architecture; indeed, very few designs have been realized even in the
affluent western world .
• Some of the gravity-defying structures by Hafeez Contractor at Infosys
Mysore may indicate that deconstruction has finally arrived, but how much
of the styling arises out of the theoretical paradigm is questionable.
• It is also witnessed in the design of interior spaces, like that of the AVLC
Building, Lonavala, by Sanjay Puri.

ZAHA HADID..
• Brief biography
• Born October 31, 1950, baghad , Iraq – born British architects
hadid began her studies at the American university in bereuit, Lebanon,
receiving a bachelor degree in mathematics.Died on 31st march 2016.
• Design style
• Her style is deconstructivism (breaking architecture, displacement and
distortion, leaving the vertical and horizontal, using rotations on small,
sharp angles, breaks up structure apparent chaos)
• Using light volumes, sharp, angular forms, the play of light and the
integration of the building with the landscape.
• Integrated into their architectural design using spiral forms.
• Projects:-
• Maxxi Rome , Italy .
• Bridge pavilion.
• Maggie’s center . 10
• Contemporary art center , Ohio.
• Vitra fire station, Germany .
“The building is both blocky
and soft, defined by geometric
volumes on the façade and
featuring an unusual ‘urban
carpet’, with the ground slowly
curving upward from the
sidewalk outside into the 11
building and ultimately up the
back wall”
FRANK GEHRY..
• Brief biography
• Gehry was born Frank Owen Goldberg on February 28, 1929, in Toronto,
Ontario. Gehry graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from USC
in 1954.
• Design style
• philosophically, deconstructivism comes as a critical response to
modernism, in which the form of a building is expected to follow strictly
from its function. use of asymmetry, exaggerated proportions and
unconventional materials.
• Deconstructivism is thus called as it attempts to destabilize modernist
thinking by breaking up design into highly stylized, individual parts.
• Projects:-
• GUGGENHEIM MEUSEUM, SPAIN
• DANCING HOUSE,CRECZH REPUBLIC
• WALT DISNEY CONCRETE HALL ,LA,USA 12
• GUGGENHIEM ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
• BUNGALOW IN SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA.
He appropriated off-the-shelf industrial materials
such as chain- link fencing, corrugated metal and
plywood and used them to loosely wrap the north
and east facades. The bold volumetric assemblage
of the exterior was matched in the interior, where
select walls and ceilings were stripped to reveal
lathing and/or the house’s wood-frame
construction.

key design feature, and the

by allowing entry of the same

New types of construction techniques will be introduced in India by this effect. For
implementing this style more amount of techniques as well as labour will be
employed. And the place wherever the style is implemented will be mark as big
landmark of architecture style.
