Statement of Intent
Ethan Johnson
How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning
and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)
Product 1
I intend to use representations to challenge the stereotype that male Hip-Hop listeners are always
rude and rebellious by the model. I intend to challenge that stereotype by getting my model to
wear bright clothing that would not be associated with Hip-Hop. For example, this would be a
male’s cardigan or a bright blue shirt. I will also get my male ethnic model to smile with direct gaze
I intend to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of the chosen brief by using cover lines
that a 16-25 year who listens to Hip-Hop would be interested in. I will do this by using names of
celebrities that are very common within this age range. For example, "Ranking of Drake's new track!".
I intend to use the industry to communicate meaning using my typography. I will use only modern
style text in my magazines because the target audience will not be attracted to it if they see an
old-style font. For example, "Blackadder" is an old-style type face which will not attract 16-25-year
olds in the modern age. They will want typefaces that they can’t relate to, for example "Georgia".
I intend to use media language to communicate meaning and meet the requirements if the
magazine using mise-en-scene. I will have props that will suggest to the audience that this is a
music magazine without even reading the cover lines. For example, this will be through speakers,
keyboard etc.
Using this media language will get the reader to decode the signs and be able to tell that this is a
For my second magazine i intend to use representation to challenge the stereotype that females
are not commonly music producers using my main image. My model is going to be a female, with
headphones and with a drum pad behind her on the wall. This intertextual language will show
typical producers and non-producers that this is a music magazine using mise-en-scene.
I intend to use audience to communicate meaning using social media apps on my content pages.
I will talk about social media apps that are mainly used by 16-25-year olds. For example,
Instagram tips to find new music". This will attract the reader because 16-25-year olds always use
social media.
I intend to use industry to represent meaning using plugs. In the plug of my second magazine i will
talk about "Merch". This will attract the reader because i will be using informal language. Due to
the fact I am not writing "Merchandise" this will show the reader how this magazine is written by
I intend to use media language to represent meaning using direct gaze. My model will be looking at
the camera whilst laughing, this will show the audience that my model is confident and also a fun-
loving person who is between the ages of 16-25. I have used this, so the audience can relate to it and
want to know more about it as they feel like they have a personal connection with the main image.
For product 2 I intend to use representation to show the reader that it’s a music magazine using
mise-en-scene. I will do this by placing music signs on my website such as music notes. Through
intertextual language the reader will understand that this website is about a music magazine.
I intend to use audience to communicate meaning using social media apps. On my website i will
give links to other social media platforms that the magazine company have created, for example
an Instagram page. This will show the audience that not only do the magazine company have a
website, but they are also digitally convergent by having different platforms.
I intend to use industry to represent meaning by having the two magazine covers on the website. This
will be done to show the reader that they are able to purchase the two editions of the magazine online
How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of
the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)
convergent nature of my media product using links on my magazine. For example, I will say “to read
more about this artist, check out our website at www.”. This demonstrates my knowledge and
understanding of the digitally convergent nature of my media product because I will be getting the
audience to transfer to the website using my main model and the link. By this method, it is most likely
to attract people because if someone bought the magazine because of the main model then saw the
website link it could attract the fan base to read more into it.
