November 13th Choir Warm-Ups BU School of Music ‘19

The goal of music for all students, (including those with exceptionalities) is to educate them to be sensitive to music, knowledgeable about it, and
somewhat skilled in its performance. TUNEFUL BEATFUL ARTFUL

Objectives: The students will be able to: Assessment: Specifically, how will you know?
1. Sing a perfect 5th interval in tune 1.

2. Demonstrate a proper singer’s breath (choral) 2.

3. Identify “Do” 3.

Standards met (Indiana State Standards or National Core Arts Standards):


Cn.3.B.1, LR.4.B.1, LR.4.B.2, LR.6.B.1, P.7.B.1, P.7.B.3, P.7.B.4, P.7.B.5

Materials:
Piano, IPad

Procedures: (Add additional activities as necessary)


Musical activities: singing, playing, moving, listening, creating, rhythmic practice, pitch/melodic practice, expressive elements, etc..

Activity/Music Procedure Purpose/Objective


1. Movement 1. Have the students mimic your movements
Patterns 2. Then after some time begin to overlap your next movement
pattern while they are mimicking your previous pattern

2. Leaky tire 1. Have the students inhale for 4 beats then hold for 4 beats and release on a 2
hiss for 4 beats (3x)

3. Hum 1. Have the students properly hum “Mi Re Do Re Mi” 2 (in conjunction with just
getting their
voice/mechanism working
initially)

4. Doo Wah 1. Have the students sing Doo Wah Padoo (Do So... So Do) 1, 2
Padoo descending then ascending

5. Numbers 1. Have the students sing through “1...121...12321” straight 3


through one time (no clapping)
2. Then Have them do it while clapping on 1 and 8 (Low Do
and High Do)

Closure Fall off a cliff 2 times

Anticipation/What-ifs
What might go better than expected? What will you do?
1. Leaky Tire may go fairly well Increase the amount of time they are to
hiss out the air on. (This causes them to
have to take in bigger/deeper breaths)

What might not go as well as expected? What will you do?


1. Humming on Mi Re Do Re Mi Sing it on solfege, then take away the
solfege and have them do it on hum. If
they are not succeeding at the hum,
remind them to separate their teeth and
keep them separated while their lips are
touching.
2. They may not initially make the Explicitly ask: “If we need to last longer,
connection that the longer you have to should our breath intake remain the same
hiss out the bigger breath is needed or be bigger?”
