ABSTRACT

The purpose of this investigatory project is for us to have some knowledge or knowledge rather
on how to make equipment or a product that can give us security, through the use of convenient
and simple materials that we can usually find at home. The first thing or step that we did is, we
prepared the materials that we need to start this investigatory project. Next step is we already
started to assemble the door alarm. Lastly, we analyze if we successfully made the door alarm. In
making the simple door alarm, we found out that we can make a product or equipment that can
be used for our own safeties through the use of the materials at home. This proves that we can
make an improvised alarm that can save our lives from danger and for the safety of everyone.
We can't say when will danger come so that with this door alarm that was made from a clothe's
clip, we can assure that this can be used in case of emergency.

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Most flashed news in the television is about crimes and it is undeniable that one of these
crimes is the robbery. Safety of the family is very important especially to those loved ones that
need to work to far places just to sustain their familys need. Not everyone can afford to buy an
alarm system which can be the signal for anyone inside the house that there is an unexpected
person trying to enter their house. The researchers come up with an idea of innovating a
homemade alarm system that can help us in that kind of situation. Simple things that you can
find at home that can also give the parents a big help by transforming clothes clippers into a door
alarm system.
Having a good home alarm system will lessen or definitely decrease chances of intruders
and thieves from getting into houses. If people have a home alarm, and when intruders or
thieves broke in and the alarm went off then they will probably have no time to hang around too
long and so they would get less of our valuable items.(Allison, 2018)
May we put in our minds that it is better to be safe then sorry when it comes to the
safety of our family. Intruders and thieves are almost everywhere, it is just right for us to be extra
careful. If you decided to purchase a home alarm system, then you will see that there really is not
a single downside. Sure you and your family will enjoy the continuous 24 hour protection, be at
home and protected properly and possibly saving your life. The feeling of security will give you
and your family peace of mind everyday. (Allison,2018)

B. Objectives

We can never know when is the time that robbers will try to sneak inside our home. This
could be the main purpose of this product. Most of the times people were busy checking their
phones, watching the television while some people are tight sleepers. Robbers may possibly
enter your house in the middle of the night, in the time that no one can notice that is why this
product could bring a big help to everyone.
● To inform the people inside the home that someone is sneaking inside their house.
● To keep the people inside the house be alert once the alarm system rang.
● To give the netizen an affordable product that can be useful in terms of their security and
safety.

C. Significance of the study

This project can contribute well in the community. Most people were unaware about their
security at home and this product can be reliable to give signal and to make you alert when the
alarm system starts to ring. It will make a loud sound that will inform you that someone may be
sneaking in your home. This sound can be heard in any part of your home because of this high
voltage battery that gives the alarm the power to ring. Also this product is affordable than the
other branded alarm system.
The beneficiaries for this project are the house person who are not attentively watching
the whole house. Although there could be a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in the house, this
simple alarm system can also give a huge help in terms of the familys safety and security.

D. Review of Related Literature

Alarm fatigue is a national problem and the number one medical device technology
hazard in 2012. The problem of alarm desensitization is multifaceted and related to a high false
alarm rate, poor positive predictive value, lack of alarm standardization, and the number of
alarming medical devices in hospitals today. This integrative review synthesizes research and
non-research findings published between 1/1/2000 and 10/1/2011 using The Johns Hopkins
Nursing Evidence-Based Practice model. Seventy-two articles were included. Research evidence
was organized into five main themes: excessive alarms and effects on staff; nurse's response to
alarms; alarm sounds and audibility; technology to reduce false alarms; and alarm notification
systems. Non-research evidence was divided into two main themes: strategies to reduce alarm
desensitization, and alarm priority and notification systems. Evidence-based practice
recommendations and gaps in research are summarized.(Jacqueline E. Stokes, Sajid H. Manzoor
and Maria M. Cvach, 2007)

Background Reliance on physiological monitors to continuously watch patients and to alert the
nurse when a serious rhythm problem occurs is standard practice on monitored units. Alarms are
intended to alert clinicians to deviations from a predetermined normal status. However, alarm
fatigue may occur when the sheer number of monitor alarms overwhelms clinicians, possibly
leading to alarms being disabled, silenced, or ignored.
Purpose Excessive numbers of monitor alarms and fear that nurses have become desensitized to
these alarms was the impetus for a unit-based quality improvement project.

Methods Small tests of change to improve alarm management were conducted on a medical
progressive care unit. The types and frequency of monitor alarms in the unit were assessed.
Nurses were trained to individualize patients alarm parameter limits and levels. Monitor software
was modified to promote audibility of critical alarms.

Results Critical monitor alarms were reduced 43% from baseline data. The reduction of alarms
could be attributed to adjustment of monitor alarm defaults, careful assessment and
customization of monitor alarm parameter limits and levels, and implementation of an
interdisciplinary monitor policy.

Discussion Although alarms are important and sometimes life-saving, they can compromise
patients safety if ignored. This unit-based quality improvement initiative was beneficial as a
starting point for revamping alarm management throughout the institution.(KC Graham, M
Cvach - American Journal of Critical Care, 2010)

This review brings together several different strands of research: (i) the sleep arousal literature
pertaining to auditory arousal thresholds (AATs), (ii) studies on factors affecting responsiveness
to auditory signals during sleep, (iii) literature on responsiveness to smoke detector alarms
during sleep and (iv) research on fire fatality statistics and victim characteristics. The review
discusses the influence of age, sleep deprivation, signal frequency, background noise, hearing
loss, time of night, stage of sleep, sex differences, dream incorporation, depression, signal
meaningfulness, sleeping tablets, alcohol and marijuana on responsiveness during sleep. Studies
using smoke alarms clearly suggest that an unimpaired sleeping adult will awaken quickly to a
5560 dBA alarm (such as with a hallway installation), while the AAT literature suggests higher
thresholds (most likely due to differences in signal frequency). However, it is argued that the
level required to wake such adults under the ideal circumstances of an experimental situation
should not be the minimum standard for pillow audibility. Such a level is unlikely to arouse
children, those on sleep inducing medication, people with high frequency hearing loss (as may
occur with age), those who are sleep deprived or those under the influence of alcohol or
marijuana. The responsiveness of the unimpaired adults tested is not generalisable to the
responsiveness of the people most likely to be the victims of fire occurring while they are asleep
(the very young, elderly, intoxicated, or sick). The sound intensity of the alarm at the pillow
should have the highest chance of arousing those most at risk of dying. It is, therefore,
recommended that smoke detector alarms be installed in the bedrooms themselves such that the
signal intensity is at the maximum level tolerable to the human ear, that is approximately 90
dBA.(D Bruck - Fire safety journal, 2001)
Alarm fatigue desensitizes nurses to alarm signals and presents potential for patient harm. This
project describes an innovative method of communicating cardiac monitor alarms to pagers using
an alarm escalation algorithm. This innovation was tested on 2 surgical progressive care units
over a 6-month period. There was a significant decrease in mean frequency and duration of
high-priority monitor alarms and improvement in nurses' perception of alarm response time,
using this method of alarm communication.(Cvach, Maria M. DNP, RN, CCRN; Frank, Robert J.
CET; Doyle, Pete PhD, CHFP; Stevens, Zeina Khouri PhD, RN, 2014)

The phenomenon known as alarm fatigue is the direct result of excessive alarms in hospitals.
This article highlights the effects of alarm fatigue and reviews current clinical recommendations
and guidelines to raise nurse awareness and provide tools to combat the problem.(T Purbaugh -
Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing, 2014)

METHODOLOGY

A.Materials

Clothes pin

Glue gun

9v battery

Screw

Buzzer

Wires

Blocking sheet

B.Procedures

The first procedure, you will need the spare clothes pin. Using the glue gun, glue the 9v battery
onto the pin. Drill a hole through the tip of the pin and fix a small screw into the hole. Afterward
prepare the buzzer for soldering. You can use any buzzer you can find from your old mother
board or old electronics appliances that you have. Then give the buzzer to the pin. Solder the
buzzer wires to the top and to the battery terminal and solder a wire to connect the battery
terminal. And last, make a contact blocking sheet slide it in between the pin tip. Then you need
to pull it out, the buzzer will create a sound.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The simple door alarm developed in this project did well in achieving its original goals. In the
beginning the designing was divided into designing of the power supply unit (wires and battery)
designing of the alarm sounder unit(buzzer) and the designing of the clip as switching unit

The alarm was tested after and before casing it. Before casing, the buzzer connections were
tested for any possible dissapointment outcome. The test was carried out using an finish product
of the study. None of such faults were found. After casing, the alarm was plugged to the door
and window, the touch point was touched and an audible alarm was heard.

The aim of the project has been the design and construction of a door alarm system. The door
alarm system gives an audible alarm when the door handle to which is connected to is touched.
The necessary specification was taken and the design was made according to this specification.
The alarm was then constructed and tested. It operate as required. The aim as stated above has
been achieved

RECOMMENDATION

In this part we can let the parents and maids know that they can be ready in case of an
emergency or danger using the affordable door alarm.

Recommendation for parents- to inform the parents that it can be use in case that there's a thief
that attempts or wants to go inside their house/s. Through the sound that can produce of this door
alarm, this warns the people inside the house that there's someone who's trying to enter their
house. Everyone can make this simple door alarm because the materials used are cheap and can
easily find at home.

Recommendation for maids-it can help the maids to inform their boss/es that there's someone
or a thief who's trying to go inside their house and they will start to protect their house once the
door alarm alarmed. This is a big help for maids so that they can protect the home owners or
their boss/es in case of danger.

CONCLUSION
Safety of the family is the most important thing that matters especially to those people
who are working far away from their homes. The researchers com up with this idea of
innovating a simple clothes' clipper into an alarm system. Now everybody can afford to have a
cheap security device that can serve as a big help to their families. Based on the details
stated,we can prove that our product is useful to everyone. It can help the home owner to
notice when there are people entering their house. This cheap alarm will create a sound
whenever opening the door. It can catch attention because of its sound .
The people inside the house will know if there is someone entering their house it can
also help them to be alert if someone is trying to do anything bad to them. It can also serve as a
signal for them to be aware to all the opening doors and windows in their house because they
never know when is the time the criminals would attack or sneak.
