INDUSTRIAL VISIT

KANAN DEVAN HILLS PLANTATION COMPANY (P) LIMITED

COMPANY PROFILE:

Carrying forward a lineage that dates back over 136 years to the British Colonial Raj era, the Kannan
Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited (KDHP) succeeded Tata Tea Limited on 1st April,
2005, when the latter exited most of its plantations in Munnar to focus on the growth of its branded
tea business. During the year 2004-2005, owing to the general crisis prevalent in the tea industry at
the time, Tata Tea Ltd restructured and came up with a proposal to transfer its holdings in the
Kannan Devan Hills Village. This was done as part of a restructuring exercise evolved through a
detailed study, particularly taking note of the prevalent crisis in the tea industry.

Thus, the Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Company was formed, making it the largest employee-
owned tea company in the world. Encompassing the Participatory Management System of
operations, where the shareholders of the company are mainly its employees - a novel concept in
the plantation industry credited to the farsighted vision of the company's Founding Managing
Director, Late. Mr. T.V. Alexander - about 60% of the subscribed share capital of the company is held
by its employees, and almost 99.9% of its employees are shareholders of the company. With 12,000
plus employees and 12 departments governing the various functional areas of the company, KDHP
covers a total area of 23,783 hectares, all located in the High Ranges of Idukki District in Kerala. As
the largest tea corporate in South India, the company also occupies a prestigious place on the tea
map of Kerala, constituting 24.3% of the total tea area in the State and accounting for 31.5% of the
production in the State.

A unique feature of the Kannan Devan hills Plantations Company Pvt Ltd is the implementation of
the Participatory Management System, introduced with a view to ensure full participation of the
employees in the management of the company. As part of this three-tier structure that encompasses
all the sections of the employees of the company, one worker representative and one staff
representative are nominated as Directors on the Board of the company. The employees identified
as the Best Worker and Best Staff in a year are nominated to the Board during the following financial
year.

The KDHP company is having 16 factories, among these 7 are orthodox teas producing
factories and 9 are CTC (cut tear curl) tea producing factories.

PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING GREEN TEA:

The green leaf that is received in the factory has a moisture of 80%-85% The moisture is
reduced to around70% though withering. For withering ambient air is used. Hot air is used if
the leaf is wet. After withering the leaf through a green leaf sifter then through a
minitractor and rote vane for pre -conditioning the leaf for cutting. In the CTC process the
CTC rollers crush, tear and curl the leaf. Then the leaf goes into a fermenting Drum where
the leaf is kept for 90-120 minutes and the leaf gets fermented. The fermentation time
depends on the quality of leaf and the weather condition. The leaf then goes into a dryer
where hot air at 135() is passed to arrest fermentation and reduce the moisture to around
2.8%. The dryer mouth tea is then passed through fibre extractor (static current) to clean the
fibre and the sifter/sorter using various meshes to sorting the tea according to the sizes.
Then the graded tea is tea is packed for despatch to various destination.

bagged numerous awards at the prestigious Golden Leaf India Awards, Southern Tea
Competition since its inception. Unrelenting quality consciousness in all the operations is
the cornerstone of our success.
The company had also bagged the award for ‘Best Fleet Operator’ in the Kerala state energy
conservation awards in 2010.

CONCLUSION:
This industrial visit was a great experience to me. It was a real pleasure for me to visit the
Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Private Ltd. We got information about the factory and the
process of manufacturing of tea by one of the production managers in a good atmosphere.
Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Private Ltd, allows me to be immerged in a different way to
meet several interesting people and able to study the working of tea manufacturing
organization and to learn a lot of thing which added my knowledge.

EASTERN HISTORY
Established in 1983, today Eastern has the finest grip on the Indian spice market, (a feat
achieved with the hard work of Mr. M. E. Meera). Take a moment and dive into the history of
being India’s No.1 Spice Exporter with a production capacity of 20tones a day was an
absolutely necessary.

COMPANY PROFILE:
Eastern Condiments Pvt Ltd is a flagship company of the Eastern Group. The Eastern Group was
founded by late Mr. M.E. Meera. By starting a wholesale provision goods store at a small town in
Idukki district, named Animal, in 1969, he paved the foundation for a business empire.

It was named as “Eastern Trading Company”. As being a milestone in the Eastern group’s progress,
Eastern Coffee and Curry Powder established in 1983 as a pioneer in the state to produce packed
curry powders, coffee powder and food products. Eastern Condiments was established in 1991, as
an expanded form of Eastern Coffee and Curry Powder. Today the company has grown to one
among the favourites in India. Eastern Condiments Pvt. LTD. is a well-established name as Kerala’s
largest

manufacturer of condiments and one of the leading brands among South India. The company
exports its products to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the past few years and now
the company exports its products to various parts of the world like Middle East, the U.K, the U.S.A,
Australia, Germany etc. The production at the initial period was only 100kg per day. In those days,
the process of production was enhanced from grinding to pulverizing and so the production could
also help to preserve the natural taste of the powder. As Eastern curry powder unit could not meet
the increased demand, establishment of Eastern Condiments production capacity of 100kg per day,
now it can produce around 78 tons per day. The purity and freshness of Eastern Curry Powders
made “Eastern” a house hold name in India and abroad. Bringing high quality products every day at
affordable prices to the common man for his daily use is the ultimate goal of Eastern group of
