ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

Introduction

What you will learn from this book

Unlike many personal finance books, ’ZANGENA! How
to manage your monthly salary wisely to achieve
great things’ was specifically written for people who
struggle to make it on a monthly basis with just their
salary.

Do you at times feel overwhelmed with different kinds of

expenditures? This book provides tricks and tips on how
to manage your salary wisely in our current inflationary
economies where most of the prices for goods and
services keep on rising higher than our monthly incomes.

This book is full of guidance on how to spend your

money wisely. The information in this book can save a
financially strapped household from financial problems
that come about as a result of salary mismanagement.

The information in this book was gathered using

investigative research by studying carefully why most
people struggle to make it to the month end with their
salaries. This book does not focus much on wealth
creation but instead teaches readers how best they can
manage their pay no matter its size.

This book is content rich and jargon-free. There are no

challenging economics or accounting terms; it’s just a
simple book talking about your salary.

2
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

You will find this book humorous in some chapters

because I believe learning should be fun and exciting.
This book is meant to be a quick read that will appeal to
the average reader just struggling to make ends meet.

Most of the people I observed during my research work

hard. These people work tooth and nail, day and night to
ensure that the bills and other family or household needs
are met on a daily basis. It is surprising that many of
these people continue to struggle when it comes to
attaining financial peace of mind in their lives and homes.
It’s like the more money they make, the more the
problems show up.

Where could the problem be? You will soon find out
from this book.

In this book, you will learn:

 how to make your ‘hand to mouth’ way of life to

take a U-turn.
 How to make automatic savings and control your
expenditure.
 How to use a budget as a tool for controlling your
monthly cash flow.
 How to remove the waste from your budget.
 How to reduce your overall unnecessary
spending.
 How to pay off your debts quickly.
 What to do before you start spending your salary
to avoid mismanaging it

3
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

 Dos and Don’ts when your salary hits your

account.
 How best to manage your salary while still taking
care of your family, handling investments,
vacations, loans and your side businesses.
 18 ways you can use reduce expenses to boost
your monthly savings.

And many other cool things to manage your salary

better.

If you are excited about learning how to take charge of

your salary, stop living paycheck to paycheck and attain
financial freedom, then download or buy this book now.
You will be glad you did.

Like I earlier alluded to, this book was written to help you
get ahead in life by managing your salary well whether it
is small or big.

In this current economic climate we have in the world, it’s

common to find more and more of us are struggling to
pay the bills, buy groceries, pay school fees, purchase
foodstuffs and fill up our gas tanks to capacity.

Paying off the loans, we have accumulated over the

years and also at the same time putting our kids through
preschool to the university on our current salaries can
seem to be a hard nut to crack.

Due to the issues mentioned above, living hand to mouth

seemingly look like a hard chain to break because it

4
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

always looks like there is ‘not enough’ available in our

pockets all the time.

Did you know that you can break out of all this financial
clutter? I will show you how to do it in this book but you
need to tell me what type of a reader you are first.

What type of a reader are you?

‘There are two kinds of people who read books, those
who read and implement the new knowledge they have
acquired and those who read, appreciate the contents
but do nothing about what they have learned.’ Jones
Chipeta

I am asking you to be the type of a reader who attaches

an action to what is learned because that is the only way
you can benefit from this book. I have packaged a lot of
wisdom on how to manage your salary wisely across all
chapters.

I have even repeated myself on critical points throughout

the various sections of this book so that in case you mist
an essential point somewhere, you could still find it in
other areas of the same book. It is now up to you to hear
the wisdom, learn something from it and apply it in your
life by attaching an action to what you are going to learn.

Who should read this book?

This book is for individuals who receive a salary at the
end of every month and are tired of living hand to mouth.
It is for individuals who are eager to move ahead in their

5
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

financial journeys by overcoming the deadly disease of

salary mismanagement syndrome and ultimately
breaking the chains of living paycheck to paycheck

This book is for individuals who are open-minded and are

willing to learn how to use their salaries properly to
achieve their financial goals and live a money stress-free
life irrespective of the size of their salaries.

Chapter 1
Are You Managing Your Salary Wisely?

Introduction
How you manage, spend, and invest your salary can
have a profound impact on your life, health and self-
esteem. If you spend your monthly pay wisely, you are
going to live longer than if you mismanage it.

Learning institutions do not teach how to manage a

salary. Do you know of any course at any learning
institution that explains how to manage a salary?.

The knowledge we have about money is in most cases

what we have learned from our parents, self-experiences
or the church because there are no formal systems to
educate the masses on how to manage their salaries
well.

It is therefore not surprising that very few individuals

have developed the essential skills needed to manage
money well. Learning how to manage your monthly
income can take a while, but the basics are relatively
simple, and the principles are not difficult to understand.

You were probably taught some basic math growing up,

but many people have reached adulthood without ever
learning basic money management skills like creating a

7
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

budget, investing, planning for retirement or even how

loans really work. All these are shockingly rare skills.

Zangena
Do you know the ‘’ZANGENA’’ frenzy that hits the city
when everyone is paid? ‘Zangena’ is one of the common
phrases that is well known all over Zambia. The last day
of every month is unarguably the most favourite day of
many working-class individuals including myself because
there are more smiles on people’s faces than frowns.

It is very easy to tell if people are paid in our country

because suddenly there are all smiles ‘chabe’ throughout
the whole town. You may be deceived to think that our
nation has won the world cup if you see the jubilation that
spreads throughout the city at the month end.

During this frenzy, Shopping malls become packed with

a lot of people and vehicles. Moving a trolley in some
supermarkets becomes almost impossible because
‘trolley jams’ as well as ‘’people jams’’ become the
common sight inside most of the supermarkets.

This frenzy lasts for about 2 to 5 days after which the

whole workforce suddenly becomes very humble
(Because salaries are finished). This cycle to some
people goes on and on year after year until they die.

What is this cycle?

8
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

This cycle starts with a shout of ‘ZANGENA’ followed by

a spending spree and then ‘BACK TO SQUARE ONE’
waiting for another day ‘THE ZANGENA DAY.’

A lot of money passes through the hands of the

ZANGENA victims without leaving a mark outward for
anything worthwhile to point out as a major achievement
apart from a pot belly or a latest shoe.

How well are you managing your

salary?
Many people think that they know how to manage their
salaries well when in fact they don’t. The way you will
answer the following questions will determine whether
you are managing your monthly pay well or not.

Are you ready?

Write answers to these questions on a piece of paper

then you can mark yourself by checking the marking key
I have provided below.

1. Do you run out of money before the month ends?

2. Do you feel like your salary is not enough to pay for all
your bills?

3. If you were fired at work today, would you be able to

survive for the next six months?

4. Do you know exactly where your money goes every

month?

9
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

5. Are you always late to pay your utility bills and debts?

6. Do you often quarrel with your spouse over finances?

7. Do you feel that you are not in control of your salary

but want to reverse that?

8. Do you live hand to mouth month after month and year

after year?

9. Do you manage to tithe or give 10% of your salary to

the poor?

10. Do you always pray that the month end should come
fast?

If you answered yes to all the questions except for 3, 4

and 9, it means that we have some work to do with you
in this book 

Who is Faith Lumbanya?

Faith Lumbanya (Not her real name) is the name of the
maid we employed with my wife many years ago. She
was a dedicated worker, humble and most of all very
financially intelligent; you know why I say so? Because
she was getting a salary 15 times less than her bosses,
but she managed to build a house while her bosses (the
author of this book and his wife) didn’t even own a plot at
that time.

I always used to complain that my salary was small and

wondered why management wouldn’t increase my pay. I

10
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

thought staying in office from 8hrs to 17hrs and

sometimes hanging around up to 19hrs to balance the
books was evidence enough to convince my bosses to
promote me and shower me with a raise BUT to by
shock, my salary faithfully remained at the same level for
a very long time. On the other hand, my maid who was
getting 15 times lower than me managed to build a
house as a strategy to prepare for her retirement while I
failed to do that.

One Saturday morning, she approached me to ask for a

door frame I had removed from one of my chicken
houses, she wanted to put a door on her house because
she had finished it but the only hindering factor was a
door frame. I had no option but to freely give it away to
her. How can you refuse to help a person who has
already done 90% of the hard job?

The difference between the maid and me was that my

maid knew how to manage her salary well while I didn’t.

‘It doesn’t matter how much your salary is, what

matters is how well you manage it.’- Jones Chipeta

Many people all over Zambia work tooth and nail to make
money, but only a few of them take time to learn how to
manage what they are making. Without learning the art
of managing your salary well, you indirectly promise a
miserable future for yourself and your children without
you even knowing.

Many of the financial problems we face can be avoided

only if we learned how to manage our salaries well. I

11
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

thought I knew how to manage my salary until I learned

what I am sharing with you in this book. I was wondering
why it seemed like each month had more days than the
money I had; I felt my salary was so small to pay all my
bills. I WAS WRONG!

After a fight with management, my salary was finally

raised BUT it was like the more money I had, the more
problems came to me. No bonus, increment or
allowances solved my money problems 100%. This
occurrence made me realise that the problem was not
the ‘lack of money’ but my ‘lack of accurate knowledge’
on how to manage my salary.

Warning signs of salary

mismanagement
It can be hard to know whether you are managing your
salary well or not because it takes a financial education
to notice. I have provided the following guidelines which
can help you to find out how well you are managing your
salary. There are 4 guidelines that I use to check
whether I am managing my salary well or not.

The following are the guidelines:

1. When you begin saying ‘I don’t know where my salary

went’ after it is completely finished.

2. When you are struggling to pay for basic necessities

like food, shelter, transport and medical expenses
from your salary.

12
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

3. When a big percentage of your salary goes towards

debt repayment.

4. When you can’t live comfortably for six months if your

salary was cut today.

Are you able to resonate your financial lifestyle with

these four issues above?

The black and white truth about

your salary which no one will ever
tell you
Your salary can never make you rich because it is merely
a seed that you need to plant today to reap a harvest of a
brighter future. Use it wisely, and you will be a hero
tomorrow, use it recklessly, and you will be at zero
tomorrow; the choice is yours to decide how you will use
your hard earned money. We all have to start from
somewhere and a salary offers you and me a good place
to start from.

There is no such a thing as a big or small salary because

no matter how much your monthly pay is, if you lack the
personal finance management training, you will still end
up poor; only time can tell. If our maid could build a
house from her salary and complete it, you have no
excuse of saying ‘my salary is small’.

I used to complain a lot that my salary was too small. I

would envy those who get more than myself and wish
that I could get their level of pay. But what shocked me

13
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

was that even the highest paid employees also complain

that their salaries were too small so I started wondering if
there was such a thing as a ‘big comfortable’ salary.

My eyes opened when I saw how my maid and my rich

uncle managed their salaries. I learnt from my
observation that ‘it doesn’t matter how much your pay is,
what matters is how you handle what you receive every
month.

The small but big stories

The security officer
Security officer’s shifts usually allow them to work during
the night or day. There was a wise security officer by the
name of ‘Daniel Sinyinza’ at my working place. I call him
wise because the way he managed his salary was better
than how most of us would manage our own.

I noticed that Daniel loved reading books in the night

because he was a type of a man you would find with a
book in his hands every time you see him. I used to meet
Daniel most of the times because my knocking off time
always coincided with his reporting time.

One day I decided to ask for a favour from him to

proofread this book when it was still in its draft form. He
took a week to finish reading it, correcting spellings,
punctuations and some grammatical errors.

Do you know why I decided to use him for that type of

work?

14
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

This is because he had enrolled for distance learning as

an English teacher. While guarding in the night, he would
take some time to study and do his assignments. While
his other guard friends were busy drinking and enjoying
life, he was busy upgrading his papers.

To cut a long story short.

He told me that after reading the draft of this book, it

opened his financial eyes and he started looking at his
money differently. Right now, he is a head teacher at one
of the renowned schools, and he is preparing for
retirement by building his house on a customary land he
bought a year ago. I went to check on Daniel’s building
project, and I was thrilled with the progress I saw. It was
on window level at the time of writing this book. I had no
idea that a draft manuscript of a book could change
somebody’s life. If a draft version of a book can change
the mindset of someone, you may want to read the
completed book to see what impact it can have on your
life.

Steven and Moses

I was employed as an assistant accountant for one of the

reputable firms in our city. While working in that capacity,
I met and came to know Steven and Moses. These two
fellows were general workers who worked closely with
me. They were assigned by management to help with
clerical work at the administration block.

I noticed a particular trend in the way these two guys

managed their salaries.

15
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

Let’s start with Steven.

Steven would get his pay and go straight to the bar.

He was very eager to receive his salary. He couldn’t

manage to wait for even a second when he hears that
‘Zangena’

If the payday was on Monday, I would expect a sick note

the following day because he would develop a hangover
due to excessive drinking the previous day.

His wife would sometimes call the office to find out if her
husband (Steven) was paid or not because Steven had a
tendency of not revealing such vital information to his
wife.

Steven loved to buy good clothes for himself because he

found joy in looking attractive to the opposite sex. He had
a number of girlfriends even though his salary was small.
I even used to wonder how he was managing this kind of
lifestyle of his.

Steven had no ambitions and no financial goals, and

because of this, all his salary was used for food and
‘partying’ only.

Steven was a regular signatory to the salary advance

application forms. I never knew a month which passed
without Steve requesting for a cash advance. 5 days
after payday, he would already start pushing for an
advance.

16
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

Last year, that is after 10 years, I visited him to find out

how he was doing. Guess what I found out? Steven was
still a GENERAL WORKER!

I will check on him after another 10 years again, and I will

let you know his progress. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be
surprised if I still found him working in the same capacity.

What about Moses?

Moses was a general worker assigned to help the

accounts and administration department.it was a regular
chore for Moses to clean my office and make tea for me.

One day, as Moses was cleaning my office, he politely

enquired how I became an accountant. As I was
explaining to him, I could see that he was determined to
become one.

His salary was not that big; I suppose you know how
much general workers are paid but he made the most of
the gratuities he was getting by enrolling in an
accounting school as a distant student.

Steven started laughing at him and discouraging him.

Steven would do this to his friend by using words like
‘accounts have difficult subjects, you will never pass’ or ‘
there are no jobs for accountants anymore, when you
complete this course you will remain unemployed’ But
Moses gave a deaf ear to his friend's comments and
pressed on working on his ambition.

17
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

Moses spent his salary mostly on basic necessities and

anything that was left over was used for his education.

I am a kind of person who never deletes contacts or

forgets about people I have been with for a long time. I
decided to call Moses after 10 years to find out how he
was doing.

Guess what?

He is an accountant

The real stories above show us that if we can look into

the future and sacrifice a little bit today, there is nothing
impossible for us. We can achieve anything we want with
our salaries no matter how small it is.

Chapter 2
The Salary Mismanagement Syndrome (Sms)
and 21 Quick Tips To Cure It
‘’In life, there are only two ways, the right and the wrong
way. When wise people see that they are in the wrong
way, they stop moving and start looking for the right way
until they find it while the unwise continue moving and
pretend that it is the right way.’’ -Jones Chipeta

If the manner in which you are managing your salary was

a way, would it be considered the right or wrong way?

The SMS unveiled

This chapter is meant to give you a quick snapshot of
how to manage your salary wisely. I have summarised
the information in this chapter so that you can digest it
quickly. I will dive into the details later in the book. I hope
you will read until the end so that you can understand
fully what I have to share with you from my heart.

Allow me to ask you some questions before we go any

further with our salary management lessons:

- Do you find yourself struggling to stretch your

salary to the end of the month?
- Do you find yourself living hand to mouth month
after month and year after year?
- Are you always praying for the month end to come
fast?

19
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

- Do you develop headaches to pay for school fees,

rentals, clothes, fuel, medicine and foodstuffs for
your home from your salary?
- Do you always hope that somehow money would
mysteriously come from unexpected places to
carry you through the month end?

If yes then you are not the only one.

There are a lot of people out there who have similar

challenges to yours, and that is why this book was
written to offer solutions. The root cause of the
challenges above may be genuine, but sometimes it’s a
syndrome. I call it ‘The salary Mismanagement
syndrome’ aka SMS.

The problem with this syndrome is that a person may be

suffering from it without even knowing. Do you also suffer
from this syndrome? of course not.

But not so fast , Let us first do some simple diagnostic

tests to check how well you are before we can let you off
the hook because you may be like the many who suffer
from this SMS and are completely unaware.

The following are the Symptoms of the SMS disease:

a) Living hand to mouth month after month, year after

year and decade after decade
b) Not having any plan to handle any emergencies that
may come
c) Continuous fighting with your spouse over money
from your salary

20
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

d) Constant worrying over how to spend a salary

e) Failing to pay for bills from your salary when they
become due
f) Failing to save any money from your salary
g) Wondering where your salary went after it is finished
h) More than 40% of your salary going towards bad debt
repayments each month

And many more……..

It’s not fun to have these symptoms because if left

unchecked, they are capable of giving birth to serious
side effects.

The SMS has a lot of side effects. I have listed a few

below for your consideration:

1. Due to living hand to mouth month after month,

affected victims usually have no money left over from
their salaries to use for wealth accumulation. This
means that, no matter how hard such people work,
they remain at the same level without registering any
meaningful achievements in their lives.
2. Any emergencies that can come up, e.g. a car break
down, would force victims to borrow money to solve
it. This problem then leads to unnecessary
accumulation of bad debt.
3. Peace of mind becomes only a dream because
money worries become a daily norm. School fees,
rentals, medical costs etc. become a thorn in the flesh
each time they show up.

21
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

4. Arguments over money with your spouse become a

common trend in the home. This can lead to divorce if
not handled properly. If you treasure your marriage,
you are going to put an effort to ensure that you cure
yourself from all the SMS symptoms.

The biggest challenge I have faced when helping people

to cure this syndrome is that they always have someone
else to blame for their problem apart from themselves.

When I ask my clients, what they think is the cause for

landing themselves with the SMS, they always give
answers such as the following:

a) The living standards are high that is why we have

these money problems.
b) My boss has not given me an increment.
c) My salary is small.
d) My wife/husband is a money waster.
e) There is a recession in the economy.
f) Our currency has no value.

I would like to make one point clear here before we go

more in-depth on this topic…..

If there are money problems around you, the problem is

not with the external factors BUT with you. The person
you see in the mirror is the one to blame.

If you can take responsibility today and see yourself as a

cause of this problem, you are likely to make a conscious
decision to manage your salary well rather than when
you shift the blame to someone or something else.

What do you think is the solution to this SMS problem?

The solution to this problem is NOT to get a better job or

to demand a salary increment. This is because if you
can’t manage the little, you have now, how can you be
entrusted with more? (Luke 16 v10). You need first to
learn to take care of the little you have before you can be
trusted with BIG monies. I have seen people who die just
because they had acquired more cash than their capacity
to handle it.

If you do not have the skills to manage a small salary, it

is more probable that even if you get a raise, similar
problems will still haunt you. You need first to work on
the cause of the problem before making more money. It
is painful to work hard, make a lot of money and then
end up just wasting it.

‘What makes a difference is not how much money you

receive at the end of the month BUT how well you
manage it.’-Jones Chipeta

If you can manage your salary well, you will create

wealth if you don’t, you will suffer the consequences of
your decisions in the future.

21 tips to cure the SMS

Like I earlier said, let me quickly give you 21 quick tips
you can start using today so that you can begin
managing your salary wisely. I will go deeper on some of
the tips later in this book but in the meantime, quickly

23
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

read these tips and see how you can apply them to your
personal life starting today.

1. Spend your salary on paper first

Write on paper how you wish to spend your money

before you begin to spend it. It’s better to make mistakes
on paper because you can erase them unlike making
errors with the actual money from your salary. Spending
your salary on paper first is what is known as a budget.

Budgeting can take only a few minutes to do but will save

you millions and millions of money. The golden rule
about proper salary management is to begin budgeting
for your salary 10 days before your payday. I recommend
10 days because you will have less emotions of salary
excitement and thus make better and objective money
decisions.

Budgeting can be done monthly, quarterly or yearly

depending on your preference. I recommend that you do
your budget monthly because each month comes with its
own challenges and unique issues to handle.

The goodness with budgeting is that you will have the

opportunity to write down on paper how you wish to
spend your money even before it gets into your account.

Let me share with you some of my favourite quotes

about budgeting:

‘A budget is telling your money where to go instead of

wondering where it went’

24
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

John C Maxwell

‘The simplest definition of a budget is ‘’telling your money

where to go’

Tsh Oxenreider

‘Budgeting is not for people who do not have enough

money; it is for everyone who wants to ensure that their
money is enough’

Rosette Mugidde Wamamber

You can see from these quotes that budgeting has

nothing to do with putting restrictions on what you want
to spend your money on because it merely gives you the
power to control your money by deciding where you
would like it to go before it even comes.

I can’t stress this enough but remember this ‘If you want
to win with money, you need to begin budgeting.’

2. Don’t spend all your salary

Spending all of your money feels nice, but it’s wise to

invest and save part of it. When all you do is spend
100% of your money all the time, it will never grow or
come back to you, but if you invest or save part of it,
there is hope that it can grow and come back to you with
interest.

When you spend money, there is no opportunity of

recovering it from what you spent it on but when you

25
ZANGENA! How To Manage Your Monthly Salary Wisely To Achieve Great Things

invest it, there is a chance that your money can grow and
give you a profit when it comes back.

I have provided ways you can reduce your expenses as

a bonus at the end of this book to help you see things
you can start doing today to save money so that you can
have some significant cash left over from your salary to
boost your investments and savings after making your
monthly payments.

‘’If you can live like no one else, later you can live like no
one else’’ -Dave Ramsey

Savings and investments require that you discipline

yourself to sacrifice a bit of money from your salary to
use for building your financial house to attain financial
security. You need to make a decision that you change
certain things beginning today. Smart money
management requires that you take action NOW and not
wait for tomorrow because it may be too late.

‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and
expecting different results’- by unknown.

‘The time is always right to do what is right’ -Martin

Luther King Jr.

It’s hard to trim expenses, but it is worth it if you want to

win with money. What makes a difference is not just
knowing the right thing to do but actually doing it.

Are you going to start doing something about managing

your salary wisely or maybe you will be like the other

camp who ‘just hears and doeth nothing?’ The choice is

yours to make.

3. Get out of debt as soon as possible

Debt has the potential to reduce your salary because

each debt comes with its own monthly repayments. The
more debts you have, the more monthly debt repayments
you will have to make and the more your net salary will
be reduced.

Two people can be getting the same salary, but the

person with zero debt will go home with a bigger net pay
than the one with huge debts.

You can agree with me that zero debt level is the most
ideal situation, but if you can manage to use other
people’s money to make money for yourself, you can go
ahead and borrow.

The key to managing debt is to distinguish between

Good and Bad debt. I will talk about debt later in the
book meantime lets move to tip 4.
