PROBLEM SOLVING Mathematics
PROBLEM SOLVING Mathematics
Pendahuluan Preliminary
The term problem solving on a variety of professions and
disciplines and have a different understanding. Problem solving dalam pengajaran
matematika memiliki arti yang khusus (Branca, 1980, h. 3). Problem solving in
mathematics teaching has a special meaning (Branca, 1980, p. 3).
penyelesaiannya memerlukan ide matematika' (Mathematics Course Development
Support Material 1989: Dikutip di Blane dan Evans, 1989, h. 367). 'Problem solving in
mathematics is a process where a student or group of students (cooperative group)
accepted the challenge of dealing with math problems and the way in which the solution
can be determined indirectly with the easy and the solution requires mathematical ideas'
(Mathematics Support Materials Development Course 1989: Quoted in Blane and Evans,
1989, p. 367). Dalam problem solving, biasanya, permasalahan-permasalahan tidak
tersajikan dalam peristilahan matematika. In problem solving, usually, no tersajikan
problems in mathematical terminology. Permasalahan yang digunakan dapat diangkat
dari permasalahan kehidupan nyata (real life situation) yang pemecahannya memerlukan
ide matematika sebagai sebuah alat (tool). The problem that is used can be removed from
the problems of real life (real life situation), whose solution requires the idea of
mathematics as a tool (tool).
There
are several good reasons why the problem solving should be emphasized as an important
and very significant aspect in creating an effective mathematics teaching. Alasan pertama
familiar (Penglley, 1989, h. 10). The first reason is the hope to make math more
applicable (more applicable) in the lives of students outside the classroom or teaching in
the new situation which is not that familiar (Penglley, 1989, p. 10).
A second reason is the problem solving
provides an opportunity (opportunities) and can encourage students to discuss with other
students, namely in the process of finding answers to problems (Gervasoni, 1998, p. 23).
(their own theories), mengujinya, menguji teori temannya, membuangnya jika teori
2001). Further reason why the approach to problem solving is very valuable (valuable) is
because problem solving can encourage students to formulate his own theory (their own
theories), testing, testing his theory, throw it away if the theory is not consistent and try
the others (NCTM 1989: Quoted in Taplin, 2001).
In an effort to mengembangakan problem solving teaching
strategies, there are several aspects that need to difikirkan. Sebagaimana Pengelly (1989,
hal mendesain permasalahan, guru perlu memperhatikan latar belakang matematika anak.
As Pengelly (1989, p. 2) states that when developing problem solving skills, especially in
terms of design problems, the teacher needs to consider the mathematical background of
the child. Disamping, strategi pembelajaran problem solving perlu melakukan
penyeleksian persoalan yang layak (appropiate) untuk muridnya. In addition, problem
solving learning strategies need to conduct a proper selection problems (appropiate) for
students.
berbagai cara penyelesaian (variety of method of solution), dan nampak sedikit
matematikanya (low in mathematical content) (Hodgson, 1989, h. 350). The selected
problems should be challenging (challenging), open to various ways of completion
(variety of methods of solution), and seem a little math (low in mathematical content)
(Hodgson, 1989, p. 350).
menyeimbangkan tingkat kesulitan. In this regard, Thompson (1989, p. 275) suggest that
the need to balance the difficulty level.
motivasinya menjadi melemah (waiver). If the problem is too difficult and students are
not able to solve the students they might become desperate (disillusioned) and motivation
to be weak (waiver).
If the problems faced by students too easily, cause they are not challenged and once again
they will lose motivation.
Additionally, Schoenfeld (cited in Taplin, accessed:
March 5, 2001) also suggests that the problem must be either a problem that can be
expanded to be explored in a mathematical (mathematical Explorations) and generalized.
Bringing students in an atmosphere ready to accept the challenge or problem, because a
problem is not a problem until the students are aware of and want to solve it.
menghadapi kebuntuan (stuck). Build a class that supports atmosper, where students are
prepared to solve the problems of foreign and do not feel depressed when they face a
deadlock (stuck).
membantu mereka ketika memerlukan, tanpa memberikan jawaban. Invite children to
follow their way in finding solutions and helping them when needed, without giving
answers.
Merubah susunan tempat duduk di kelas. Changing the seating arrangement in the
classroom.
Which meant here is how to organize
student activities in accordance with the existing problem solving on. Berdasarkan
Based
on the experience of teaching mathematics at school, students in most schools sat in a line
up (sit in a row) and it probably makes it difficult to conduct discussions with other
friends in exploring ideas and concepts are hidden behind (beyond) the problems given -
and this is often referred to as one of the characteristics (key features) from solving
problems. Hodgson (1989, h. 350) menyarankan bahwa kelompok kerja (group work)
Hodgson (1989, p. 350)
suggested that the working group (group work) is something that is the essence of the
problem solving teaching.
(class discussion). Furthermore, Burns (1990, p. 25) states that learning together in small
groups (small group) provides many opportunities for students to interact with the
concept when compared with the large class discussion of students (class discussion).
pemikirannya selama aktivitas problem solving. Another advantage of this small group,
dintaranya students have the opportunity to speak much more comfortable to take the risk
(taking the risks) in testing the ideas for problem solving activities. Oleh karena itu, perlu
merubah posisi tempat duduk siswa agar memungkinkan mereka aktif berpartisipasi
dalam diskusi. Therefore, the need to change the seating positions of students to enable
them to actively participate in discussions.
From the
explanation above, there is no doubt that there are some difficulties in the assimilation
problem solving into mathematics teaching, but the benefits are far in excess of the
obstacles found.
memiliki sejumlah keuntungan (benefits). From the above discussion, problem solving
can be summarized that mathematics has a number of advantages (benefits). Strategi
membuat pembelajaran matematika lebih berarti (more meaningful), masuk akal (make
sense), menantang dan menyenangkan (challenge and fun), cocok buat siswa (relevant for
Problem
solving strategies are not only able to change the learning styles of children as passive
learners into active learners in constructing their concepts, but also, to make learning
math more meaningful (more meaningful), it makes sense (make sense), challenging and
fun (and challenge fun), suitable for students (relevant for students), and provides a
flexible way of thinking (thinking flexibility). Karenanya problem solving matematika
matematika anak. Because of mathematical problem solving can be viewed as an
important approach to improve understanding of math kids.

MATHEMATICS IN THE REAL WORLD Mathematics IN THE REAL
WORLD
Pendahuluan Preliminary
worthwhile ). Two challenges faced by the teacher always is the first capable of giving
encouragement to his students so interested in their learning and make them feel that
what he had learned it's really very useful (worthwhile). Dan yang kedua , adalah
bagaimana mereka memperoleh gagasan ( ideas ), konsep( concept ) dan keahlian (
skills ) melalui proses pembelajaran yang benar-benar bermakna (Floyd, et al., 1972, h.
1). And second, is how they get ideas (ideas), concept (concept) and expertise (skills)
through the learning process truly meaningful (Floyd, et al., 1972, p. 1).
akrab dengan kehidupan anak ( structuring of reality which is familiar with students daily
life ). To answer all these challenges Freudental (1973: cited in Reusser & Stebler, 1977)
suggest that mathematics instruction should be modified into a context familiar to the
child's life (structuring of reality Which is familiar with students daily life). Hal serupa
It is also presented by Burton (in Mathematics
Teacher 140, 1993) that through the learning of mathematics in the real world (the real
world) expected students will feel more familiar and happy with the material learned and
be able to understand (make sense) the material through its activities.
buku teks ( the teacher does not push students to follow their thinking and textbook ).
Mathematics Teacher 140, 1993) dan Davis et al. By bringing the real world in the
teaching of math teachers are not expected to force his students to always follow the
ways and means that there berfikirnya in text books (the teacher does not push students
to follow on their thinking and textbook). Therefore, a good mathematical learning
process according to Burton ( Teacher in Mathematics 140, 1993) and Davis et al. (1991;
dan membangun pemahamannya sendiri ( construct and develop their own understanding
). (1991; in Mathematics Teacher 137, 1991) was able to encourage students to create and
build their own understanding (construct and develop their own understanding).
mengajarkan matematika. As recommended by Lovitt and Clarke (1980: quoted in Smith,
2000) that mathematics teachers need to conduct innovative measures (innovative
Airways) in the teaching of mathematics. Guru perlu menyajikan model pengajaran
about the mathematics ). Teachers need to present the teaching of mathematical models
that involve physical activity (physically Involved), using information technology,
encourage students to perform mathematical writing (writing about the mathematics).
Peran guru (the role of teacher) The role of the teacher (the role of teacher)
In the real
world of mathematics learning more emphasis on students 'activeness, and therefore will
be a shift in the role of teachers' acting in front of the classroom teacher and students
watch 'to' actively working to build students 'new knowledge'.
dalam menciptakan dan membangun pengetahuan barunya ( the role of teachers is as a
fellow learner ). Therefore, the task of teachers in the real world of mathematics
instruction is more focused on assisting students in creating and building new knowledge
(the role of Teachers is as a fellow learner).

Pengantar Introduction
Model of multiple-choice
tests (multiple choice) to date and still remains widely used in the evaluation of
mathematics.
2000). For example in America, this multiple-choice tests still dominate the math
evaluation system in the country (Margaret & Mills: Quoted Ellerton & Clements, 2000).
Sementara itu berkaitan dengan sistem evaluasi pilihan ganda (Frary; Gays & Thomas;
ia jawab tersebut. Meanwhile, related to the multiple choice evaluation system (Frary;
Gays & Thomas; Hembree; Thongtawat: Quoted Ellerton & Clements, 2000) says that
the research found there are some students who can correctly answer the multiple choice
evaluation system but in fact he was "not master "mathematical concepts related to
matter, even she does not understand the irony of which he answered those questions.
Research (research) done by other Ellerton and Clement -
Mathematics Education Research Group of Australia (MERGA), Lismore - to 115
students in Year 8 by using 16 questions showed that there was 7% of students who chose
the correct answer but do not understand the concept of mathematical related to a matter
that even matter itself.
kurang memadai. Still associated with these problems, claire (2002, p. 4) asserted that the
judgment learning outcomes that merely focuses on learning outcomes alone is
considered inadequate.
Therefore, necessary step toward improving the existing evaluation system (multiple
choice), which looked for an alternative other evaluations.
The other evaluation
system is expected not to change the existence of multiple choise test but is expected to
complement the presence of existing evaluation systems and be able to overcome the
shortcomings or weaknesses that have been happening. Salah satunya adalah dengan
menggunakan sistem evaluasi portofolio (portfolio). One way is to use a portfolio
evaluation system (portfolio).
belajar. Portfolio evaluation system is a complete assessment that monitors student
progress from beginning to end in an effort to master the learning material either in the
process (on going process records) as well as the final result (output) study.
Portofolio Portfolio
Portfolio is derived from portare, meaning the bag, and a folio which means the paper.
If the visits home he said, the portfolio can be
interpreted as the place or folder that is used by students to save their results or evidence
that is the result of students' work (claire, 2002, p. 1). Sementara menurut Mousley
(2001): Meanwhile, according Mousley (2001):
progress) selama proses mengikuti mata pelajaran tertentu. From the definitions that have
been put forward by Mousley can be concluded, first, that the purpose of the portfolio is
to see student progress (ongoing record of progress) during the process of following this
particular subject.
Second, the portfolio is used to show the work of students in
that subject. Disamping, portofolio bisa menumbuhkan refleksi diri siswa lewat
memberikan komentar (additional comments) tambahan bahkan memunculkan pola pikir
In addition,
portfolios can foster self-reflection by students to comment (additional comments) raises
even more creative thinking (lateral thinking) in each work he was doing.
Hal-hal yang perlu ada dalam portofolio Things that need to exist in the portfolio
According to Robinson (2000) that the portfolio model
basically has no particular structure in the formulation. Portofolio hanya memberikan
Portfolio is only providing the
opportunity for students to be creative in designing aimed to show progress in that
subject.
melakukan setidaknya lima hal pokok (five entries), misalnya: menjawab 5 buah
Robinson (2000) adds
that in any portfolio of the student being asked to do at least five main points (five
entries), for example: answering five questions from the fruit of a given task or attach a
portfolio of five pieces of evidence from the case or practice (experiment) conducted by
students .
melibatkan muridnya. The five pieces of fruit a question or fifth thing that must be
reported in this portfolio assignment practices can be made by the teacher first with or
without involving the pupil.
Robinson (2000) menambahkan dalam portofolio dapat berisi: Robinson (2000) adds in a
portfolio may contain:
a. a. Group project (proyek yang dikerjakan dalam kelompok) Group projects (projects in
progress within the group)
b. b. Daily homework assignment (PR harian) Daily homework assignment (PR Daily)
c. c. Tests (Hasil tes yang perlu dilampirkan) Tests (Test results that need to be attached)
related subjects)
e. e. A mathematical autobiography (Biografi tokoh matematika yang terkait topik) A
mathematical Autobiography (Biographies of math-related topics)
f. f. Class note (Catatan di kelas) Class notes (notes in class)
g. g. An assignment from a science class (Mengerjakan soal tes dari kelas IPA dari
tinjauan matematika) An assignment from a science class (Doing the test in science class
from a review of mathematics)
h. h. Quizzes (Teka-teki) Quizzes (Puzzle)
i. i. Problem solving (Materi-materi matematika untuk problem solving) Problem solving
(mathematics materials for problem solving)
Robinson (2000) adds that one thing is very
important in the portfolio is a list of contents (table of contents), in which students write a
description of the progress that has been earned in each activity. Disamping, siswa perlu
In addition, students need to write a
summary (summary), which contains the thoughts (thoughts) and reflection (reflection)
of the portfolio assignment.
2000): There are several benefits that can be provided from the portfolio evaluation
model (Robinson, 2000):
1. For teacher, porfolio assignment give an opportunity to stand back and look at the
big picture of the progress that students has made in the course. For teacher,
porfolio assignments give an opportunity to stand back and look at the big picture
of the progress That has made students in the course. (Untuk guru, evaluasi
portofolio memberikan kesempatan untuk melihat kembali gambaran kemajuan
yang telah dicapai muridnya secara keseluruhan). (For teachers, evaluation of the
portfolio provides an opportunity to look back on progress made picture of his
students as a whole).
2. Porfolio challenges the teacher to give students opportunity to engage in a variety
of tasks in addition to such traditional assessments. Porfolio challenges the
teacher to give students opportunity to engage in a variety of tasks in Addition to
Standard and Poor Assessments traditional. (Evaluasi portofolio memberikan
penugasan praktek). (Evaluation of the portfolio provides a challenge to teachers
to be able to exercise or a matter of variation or assignment of the practice).
3. For students, the goals include taking responsibility for learning, gaining self-
confidence and communicating effectively. For students, the goals include taking
responsibility for learning, Gaining self-confidence and Communicating
effectively.
(Profits earned by students, students have a sense of
responsibility in both personal and learning in small groups, gained confidence,
and could communicate the results of studies in front of the class effectively).
4. Overall, portofolios give the teacher concrete evidence of how students are
progressing, but more important, they give students opportunity to assemble their
own collection of work demonstrating their mathematical power and progress.
Overall, the teacher portofolios give concrete evidence of how students are
progressing, but more Important, they want to give students opportunity Assembly
of their own collection of work demonstrating on their mathematical power and
progress.
(Overall, the portfolio will
give teachers a clear proof of student progress, but more importantly, the portfolio
provides kesempatatan on preparing students for their collections reflect the
prowess and progress in mathematics).
Berdasarka various opinions
on the above, it can draw some practical steps in implementing the evaluation portofilio
in math.

Portfolio evaluation is an evaluation form
which not only emphasizes on learning outcomes but rather the learning process.
sistem evaluasi multiple choice, disamping memberikan rasa tanggung jawab (take
Portfolio evaluation is expected to be as an alternative that can overcome the
weaknesses of the evaluation system of multiple choice, besides giving a sense of
responsibility (take responsibility) in their study of personal and group learning
(cooperative learning group) and is expected to increase self-confidence (self-confidence)
on self participants through a number of presentations conducted in-class portfolio.

1. 1. Meranking siswa
2. 2. Memutuskan banyaknya grup (Decide on the number of teams).
3. 3. Menempatkan siswa dalam kelompok (Assigning Students to Teams)
mengelompokkan siswa, gunakan daftar peringkat kemampuan siswa. Berikan huruf tim
pada setiap siswa. Sebagai contoh, jika suatu kelas ingin dibuat menjadi delapan
kelompok gunakan huruf tim dari A sampai H. Mulailah dari bagian atas dari daftarmu
denga huruf “A”, lanjutkan pemberian huruf sampai pada bagian tengah daftarmu. Ketika
Ketika anda mendapati huruf tim “A”,
balance). Setelah anda selesai melabeli setiap siswa dengan huruf tim selanjutnya:
a. a. Ambil lembar daftar anggota kelompok. Tuliskan nama siswa dalam daftar anggota
kelompok itu. Biarkan “nama timnya” tidak terisi.
b. b. Tuliskan skor dasarnya (base score). Skore dasar merepresentasikan skore rata-rata
siswa setelah mengerjakan beberapa kuis sebelumnya. Jika anda memulai STAD setelah
berkompetisi hanya dengan dirinya sendiri (competing only with himself or
Penilaian (Grading)

kehidupannya ( they perceive it as relevant ). Konsep dan isi perlu disajikan ke dalam
sesuatu yang memungkinkan murid memahami makna bahasa simbol matematika
(Horne, 1994, p. 347).
menghafal rumus-rumus ( memorize facts ). Mereka berharap agar pengajaran
mengambil alih sebagian peran guru ( computer were to take over much of the traditional
role of teacher ).
Spreadsheed Excel .
Excel juga memberikan fungsi khusus seperti lookup table, fungsi melukis grafik (
graphing function ) yaitu dengan cara mengaktifkan Chart Wizard Command-nya. 1)
1) Sumber: http://wwwstaff.murdoch.edu.au/~kissane/Spreadsheets.htm
mengekplorisasi konsep matematika melalui model animasi excel.
2) .
2) Sumber: http://www.feicht.com/lou/matst2.htm
kuadrat ( the interesting behaviour of quadratic function ) dengan cara merubah-rubah
nilai koefisien maupun konstantanya.
= ax 2 + bx + c jika nilai koefisien 'a'-nya bilangan positif sementara coefisien 'b'-nya
menemukan fungsi kuadrat tertentu.

Introduction Introduction to Problem Solving
Problem 1

out in a systematical manner to assist students / teachers with problem solving.

Problem 4
Problem 5 What is a Problem?
Problem 6
Review (1-6) A mathematical problem, like any problem in life, is defined as a problem because
it causes us much difficulty in attaining a solution. If the solution, or even the
procedure for solving it, is obvious to you then it is no longer a problem but just an
exercise. Much of our classroom mathematics is composed of repetitive exercises.
( This teaching method does have a useful purpose but it should not be all that
mathematics is about. )
"To have a problem means to search consciously for some action appropriate to
attain some clearly conceived but not immediately attainable aim. To solve a
problem means to find such an action." (George Polya)
Algorithms vs. Heuristics
Algorithms are special methods specifically designed for solving a certain type of
question. We have all learnt algorithms for specific situations, such as, the FOIL
method for multiplication of binomials. This method has been developed for that
specific situation.
Heuristics are general suggestions that may be applicable to all types of questions.
They contain a series of tasks, each containing a series of decisions, that are loosely
combined to form a model which can assist in problem solving.
The set of heuristics below is based on the work of Krulik & Rudnick (1989).

The five components above do not guarantee a solution. They are simply meant as
a guide, not an algorithm, since problem solving is a process which has no set
method. However, the use of a set of heuristics and familiarity with various
strategies can combine with previous knowledge, creativity and perseverance to
form a strong arsenal for attacking problems.

problems within this web site. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of
strategies.
draw a diagram
look for a pattern
Simplify: solve a simplified problem
solve for critical or extreme cases
make an organized list or table
Estimation: guess and check
work backwards
use logical reasoning
write equations or ratios
The review problems have strategy hints and answers provided. If you need

Problem 1: Solution
The Cynical Grandpa - Strategy: Draw a picture
This problem is designed to show you the importance of visualizing the problem
before you try to solve it with abstract equations. Many people try to solve this
problem by using area formulas, however, much time would be saved if they tried to
draw the two plots of land.
Thus, the answer to our problem is Jane. She is the favorite grandchild.
Problem 2
Intersecting Lines
Using seven distinct straight lines, what is the maximum number of points of
intersection ?
Problem 2: Solution
Intersecting Lines - Strategy: Look for a pattern. Also, draw and use table.
To begin this problem many people start by drawing the lines. Drawing is always a
good strategy to use; however, sometimes the drawing becomes tricky and too
detailed.
Due to this, you should always be thinking about the problem as you draw and
perhaps you may find a pattern within the madness. This could save you time and
frustration!
Recording data in a table will help you to see any patterns that may exist. As you
draw each line, record the # of points of intersection. Look for a pattern in the
number of additional new points that are created by each new line.
# of points of
# of lines # of new points
intersection
1 line drawn 0 pts of intersection --------------
1 more than
2 lines drawn 1 pts of intersection
previous
2 more than
3 lines drawn 3 pts of intersection
previous
3 more than
4 lines drawn 6 pts of intersection
previous
5 lines drawn
6 lines drawn
7 lines drawn
From our table we see that each additional line drawn can only intersect each of the
previous lines once. Thus, the number of new intersection points is always equal to
the number of previously drawn lines. Due to this the fifth line drawn will intersect
the previous four lines and create a maximum of four new points of intersection.
Once we have recognized and double checked our pattern we can abandon trying to
draw the complex diagram. We can now proceed with our pattern and use our table.
