new German
manufacturer
“Das Werk”

T
he Faun L900 was a
German truck built
between 1937 and 1939
by manufacturer Faun
(Fahrzeugfabriken Ansbach und
Nürnberg AG) that was mainly
used by the Wehrmacht to tow the
Sonderanhänger SdAh.115 (special
trailer), which was built by WUMAG
(Wagon und Maschinenfabrik AG
Bautzen).
The truck/trailer-combination
was able to carry up to a maximum
of ten tons of cargo and was used
to transport the Panzer I or other
light AFVs during World War II.
The brand new German model
manufacturer “Das Werk” has its
origin in Modellbau König – one of
Germanys biggest online shops for
modellers, Custom-Scale and Uschi
van der Rosten – German suppliers
for aftermarket parts. With the
permission and assistance of Faun,
“Das Werk” delivered its first full
kit. It was presented as a new
tooled kit at this year’s Nuremberg
Toy Fair to the public.
This is a wonderful kit with
outstanding details such as three
different styles of rear axles to
display the vehicle in different
states of load (empty, fully
loaded, neutral), a rear axle of the
trailer which could be displayed
uncoupled, movable loading ramps
and tail lifts, open or closed
depictable doors of the drivers cab
and a mounting tool for bending
the hoops for the tarpaulin (which
is not included).
The moulding quality and the
fit of the kit is outstanding, all the
parts boasting fantastic details.
This kit was honoured with the title
“Model of the Year” in Nuremberg
with great justice! A

I replaced the kit’s wheels with

B CONSTRUCTION
The fit of the parts was good, and I taped
together the sponsons pieces before
adding cement, laying them out on their
corresponding locations for correct
alignment. I took care not to allow any of the
Tamiya extra-thin cement to weep under the
tape as this would have dire consequences to
the surface finish. To fill any gaps in awkward
areas such as where the sponsons join around
the gun shields, I glued in tapered chunks of
sheet styrene which got trimmed off later.

to be helped with chunks of plastic dowel to
push upon the insides from where they could
not be seen. Since most of the gun detail
cannot be seen I constructed it just for my
own amusement to see how it fit and looked.
I used copper soldering clamps to hold
the halves of the steering wheel assembly
together after applying the cement. Epoxy
putty by Aves was mixed together (parts A
&B) and used to fill any of the large gaps at
the seams. I added a small piece of plastic rod
to the bottom of the hydraulic assembly so
that the attached brackets could swivel into
place easily and be glued into position.
Since Takom first released their WWI British
heavy tanks they have since improved the
track links supplied in the kit. Rather than a
multi-part assembly for each link that had
trouble fitting the running gear, they now have
simple one-piece workable links that click
together very nicely, and they really look the

mark on the middle of the lip of each link.
As mentioned, the grenade screen used for
this build was stolen from Takom’s Female
kit and assembled by carefully applying
cyano glue to the edges of the styrene frame,
securing the large photo-etched screens.
A few of the small details like headlights
and periscopes were left off until after the
painting process.

All the paints I used were mixes of Tamiya

The painting guide was enlarged on a copy machine and the camo areas were
cutout to help make masks for the four-colour scheme.

After a pre-shade colour of very dark brown was applied to the whole
vehicle, a camo brown colour of Tamiya acrylics was airbrushed onto
the appropriate areas.

B Next, XF-58 Olive Green was toned down with

a few drops of XF-57 Buff, and airbrushed onto
the areas indicated on the painting guide, followed
by another set of masks cut to match the green
pattern. Next colour was XF-60 Dark Yellow, and
after that was masked the remaining patches
were airbrushed XF-80 Royal Light Grey. All of
the masking tape was then removed to reveal
what turned out to be quite a vivid clown-like
appearance. I also painted a matching scheme
on the top surface of the hull and sponsons. For
some reason the guide did not call for this, but
I suspect that they called for light grey on the After masking the brown

A thin demarcation line was painted between
all the patches of colour using a fine tipped brush
and diluted Vallejo #862 Black Grey acrylic.
It’s most important to reduce the bright look of
this scheme down to where it starts to blend in to
a muddy background. Because the tracks on these
vehicles ran around the sides, the camouflage
paint got covered in dirt so much that the scheme
was abandoned soon after.
To start the weathering process, a light dusty-
dirt colour was mixed up using various Tamiya
acrylics, Flat Earth, Buff, Deck Tan, Dark Grey,
Olive Drab etc. In varying amounts. This was
thinned considerably and airbrushed all over the
model, concentrating on areas that would see a lot
of dust, dirt, and mud. Several light applications of
this were made, with a fresh examination made of
the progress each time.

A dilute mix of dirt-coloured acrylic was airbrushed overall to tone down the vivid look of the camouflage. After dampening the surface of the model with mineral spirit, dilute oil paint
was applied to bring out the detail and further weather the model.

was random and layered.
Heavier deposits of mud were added to the
lower part of the running gear and on top of
the sponsons by soaking the area with mineral
spirits, and dumping small heaps of pastel
powder onto the surface. Further mineral spirits
were added to soak into the piles which gave a
fixative to the pastels.

PAINTING THE TRACKS

The track runs were spray painted with Humbrol
dark grey enamel (Panzer Grey #67 mixed with
a bit of their Flat Black). The reason for using
enamel was that I was going to use Tamiya

B FIGURES
MasterBox set no. MB35158 “British and German
soldiers, Somme Battle,1916” comes with a nicely
arranged group of figures and equipment. The
anatomy of the figures is well presented and I
decided to use the heads included in the kit since
they were fairly well sculpted.
The British Tommies are equipped with a
fair bit of kit hanging from straps, so I made an
effort to replace some of this detail with lead
strip. I also used a #11 hobby blade to under-
cut some of the edges of the clothing and
equipment, enhancing the detail in general.

colours were added by drybrushing the various

The German uniform colour was a mix of

completed, the same pastel mixture used to

faces due to difficulty of seeing the detail
even with a jeweller’s visor. I was in contact
with an extremely good modeller and figure-
painter from Japan called Makoto Takaishi, who
recommended a microscope similar to what
he has used for years. I took the plunge and
bought one and extremely pleased with the
level of magnification I have now. Makoto also
recommended Winsor & Newton series 7 “000”
paint brushes, which also have worked out really
well for me. My figure painting will never be at
a level as high as some of those masters, but it
has been very enjoyable using the microscope
and better brushes.
After priming the figure’s faces with Tamiya’s
Suface Primer.G and then base coated with
Vallejo #804 Beige Red. After painting in the
eyes with a light flesh tone for the “whites” and
blue and black for the pupils, they were outlined
in a Beige Red/Mahogany Brown mix. Shadows
and highlights were painted in gradually giving
the faces some character.

DIORAMA BASE
The whole idea of this project was to display
the set of figures with an indicative tank of that
period. The Somme battles of September 1916
were fought in warm weather for some part, and
I wanted to portray the scene in dried mud and
a desolate look to the vegetation. I was put off
with the wet-mud look to many builds I’ve seen
where modellers have smeared what looks like
chocolate icing all over the running gear and
spoiled the look of an otherwise nice model.

BUILD PREVIEW Dragon 1:35 Jagdpanther Early Production with Zimmerit • Kit No. 6758

B I started off by what I find to be

the most tedious part of assembly,
which is the running gear. Dragon
gives you lots of lovely parts to
replicate the torsion bar suspension
but I left these parts off on my kit.
They are nice, but you can’t see
them when the vehicle is closed up.
As for the torsion bars themselves,
their fit to the hull is perfect. Little
pips ensure that everything stays
level, but removal of these pips will
give a poseable suspension.
Next, I would recommend that
you get the hull together. By Interleaving road wheels.
that I mean the upper and lower
hull halves, superstructure rear
plate B3, sponson fillers parts H2
& H23 as well as the rear plate
B1 or N1. The reason for this is
that I followed the instructions
to the letter and ended up with
a gap where the front upper &
lower glacis plates meet – see
the photos. The upper hull fits
perfectly to the rear plate and the
sponsons so the fault must be with
Drive sprocket. Inner transmission housing detail. Suspension detail.
the placement of part B7. The easy
solution would have been to leave
the installation of part B7 (the
textured lower glacis plate) until
the hull halves are firmly attached.
You will still have a small gap, but
not as noticeable.
I should point out that Dragon
give you all of the engine hatches
and superstructure roof as
separate parts, You can build all of
these as sub-assemblies and join
it all together later as the fit of
these parts is perfect. The engine
fan parts can be push-fitted into
place with hull fully together (due
to the kit design) so painting is
made easier. An overall view of the assembled model.

There is a gap between the upper and lower hull assemblies. Tool stowage. Scissors periscope.

54 Model Military International - August 2019

The main issue that I had with
the kit was in Step 11 where you
add the spare track to the track
racks C39. Nothing fits together
without modification and it is here
you realise that it was all designed
to be made in etch, the very same
etch that Dragon no longer provide!
Firstly, you need to thin down every
one of the lowermost mounts on
part C39. These are the brackets
that the spare tracks sit on.
Secondly, it is also useful to
widen the guide teeth holes in
the track parts that fit onto C39.
However, once you get the track
links to fit, you need to perform
some more surgery. To get the
retaining pins parts A3 to fit the

have to carve a groove into the
track links so that the pins can
fit snugly. None of this is too
noticeable on the finished item, but
it was a little frustrating.
I recommend that you fit the
Schürzen rails parts T17 and T18
before you attach the completed
tool racks to the hull. A notable
omission are the Schürzen plates
: the rails on either side of the
superstructure side plates are
there, as are the hooks. Dragon
used to provide them in their
earlier kits and their omission in
this is somewhat strange.
I must say that I was not
impressed with the metal cable
provided as I had to drill out the
plastic loops to get the cable to fit.
Its gauge is slightly too wide for
the holes in the tow loops. I will be

DRAGON
SD.KFZ.231 SCHWERER PANZERSPAHWAGEN (8-RAD)
1:72 SCALE
KIT NO.7577
This is a re-issue of the earlier version of this model Kit No. 7483. The box
has the orange flash that indicates the new boxing format. The contents are
exactly the same as the earlier version, so there is no compromise in quality.
The box is the new end opening type that has replaced the old tray style. It
has a nice colour picture of the vehicle on the front and the colour schemes
for two vehicles on the reverse.
It would appear that the kit represents a later version of the Sd.Kfz. 231 as
indicated by the vision slits and the slightly different turret front. In the box
are three sprues, one which comprises of three separate lettered parts, the
hull bottom, turret and transfers. The instruction sheet is an A4 sheet of paper
folded and only contains the assembly sequence and no colour references.
The sprues are labelled A and B with sprues C, E, F as one separate sprue.
Sprue A has the suspension parts and tyres; these are nicely moulded and
appear flash free. There is a fair amount of detail incorporated and the wheel
faces are well done, unfortunately due to the moulding process there is no
tyre tread evident.
Sprue B has the fenders and other ancillary parts to make them up; again
these are nicely moulded and appear flash free. The exhaust has been
moulded with a representation of the mesh that covered it, it appear quite
good and if painted up carefully should be as good atr representation of this
feature that you could wish for. The width indicators are a little on the chunky
side and would be best replaced.
The third sprue consists of sub sprues C, E, and F. The C sprue has the spare
wheel brush guards and weapons. Also on this sprue is the rear armoured
cover, this is shown as an option in the instructions, but is best left off as the
later versions didn’t have this feature. The E sprue contains the turret base
and the turret front and hatch, it also has the front and rear plates for the
superstructure. The F sprue has the parts for the spaced nose armour, some
Jerry cans and the Notek light. All the parts are well moulded and have no
flash evident. On the spaced armour there is a cable moulded on and looks
clumsy, this would be best removed.
The upper and lower hulls are well cast with some nice details, especially
around the hatches; the transmission detail on the underside of the lower hull
is nicely represented. They fit together well with no gaps to fill.
The turret is a single moulding with the exterior vision ports well represented,
the hatch is moulded open and is crying out for a figure to be placed in it.
There was a large piece of flash on the join of the roof to the rear plate, but
this is the only piece and can be easily removed.
The decal sheet is very basic with some early Balkenkreuz, the number plates
are white blanks and left for you to fill in
with either WH or the Sig runes and some
appropriate numbers. The Sig runes are
in two parts and need careful placement
to produce the double lightning bolts, I
have used these before and with a little
patience they work very well.
I would recommend this kit as a fine
representation of the type and it should
build up well.
Highly Recommended.

that a big statement in itself so let me explain.
With digital scans you generally get a one or two-piece figure with most
of the torso head and legs presented as one piece. The detail depending
on the printer can and often be photo realistic. But here’s the rub,
they are so good it takes a brave man to modify them. Yes, I know that
sound funny but, I for one don’t like messing with perfection.
Enter old school figures, I tend to cut these up to suit a particular
scenario that I have dreamt up in my head. These two figures from
HLBC fit the bill nicely.
Both are very well cast in five pale yellow resin pieces, both have
basically the same head and upper torso.
Each has different arms and lower bodies to suit its application.
These two are very well done with head sculpt in particular very well
done. The fabric folds, hands and boots are all handled to a very high
standard. Make no mistake, these are equal to anything out there and
come in some snazzy packaging as well.
Either or both of these would work very well with the Airfix kit and are
well worth the price being asked for them.
Highly Recommended.
