B CONSTRUCTION
The fit of the parts was good, and I taped
together the sponsons pieces before
adding cement, laying them out on their
corresponding locations for correct
alignment. I took care not to allow any of the
Tamiya extra-thin cement to weep under the
tape as this would have dire consequences to
the surface finish. To fill any gaps in awkward
areas such as where the sponsons join around
the gun shields, I glued in tapered chunks of
sheet styrene which got trimmed off later.

to be helped with chunks of plastic dowel to
push upon the insides from where they could
not be seen. Since most of the gun detail
cannot be seen I constructed it just for my
own amusement to see how it fit and looked.
I used copper soldering clamps to hold
the halves of the steering wheel assembly
together after applying the cement. Epoxy
putty by Aves was mixed together (parts A
&B) and used to fill any of the large gaps at
the seams. I added a small piece of plastic rod
to the bottom of the hydraulic assembly so
that the attached brackets could swivel into
place easily and be glued into position.
Since Takom first released their WWI British
heavy tanks they have since improved the
track links supplied in the kit. Rather than a
multi-part assembly for each link that had
trouble fitting the running gear, they now have
simple one-piece workable links that click
together very nicely, and they really look the

As mentioned, the grenade screen used for
this build was stolen from Takom’s Female
kit and assembled by carefully applying
cyano glue to the edges of the styrene frame,
securing the large photo-etched screens.
A few of the small details like headlights
and periscopes were left off until after the
painting process.

The painting guide was enlarged on a copy machine and the camo areas were

After a pre-shade colour of very dark brown was applied to the whole
vehicle, a camo brown colour of Tamiya acrylics was airbrushed onto
the appropriate areas.
A dilute mix of dirt-coloured acrylic was airbrushed overall to tone down the vivid look of the camouflage. After dampening the surface of the model with mineral spirit, dilute oil paint
was applied to bring out the detail and further weather the model.

B FIGURES
MasterBox set no. MB35158 “British and German
soldiers, Somme Battle,1916” comes with a nicely
arranged group of figures and equipment. The
anatomy of the figures is well presented and I
decided to use the heads included in the kit since
they were fairly well sculpted.
The British Tommies are equipped with a
fair bit of kit hanging from straps, so I made an
effort to replace some of this detail with lead
strip. I also used a #11 hobby blade to under-
cut some of the edges of the clothing and
equipment, enhancing the detail in general.

colours were added by drybrushing the various
shades of acrylic on. The base colour for the
British was English Uniform #921, and variations

The German uniform colour was a mix of
Vallejo #964 Field Blue and #830 German

completed, the same pastel mixture used to
weather the tank was added in small amounts to

faces due to difficulty of seeing the detail
even with a jeweller’s visor. I was in contact
with an extremely good modeller and figure-
painter from Japan called Makoto Takaishi, who
recommended a microscope similar to what
he has used for years. I took the plunge and
bought one and extremely pleased with the
level of magnification I have now. Makoto also
recommended Winsor & Newton series 7 “000”
paint brushes, which also have worked out really
well for me. My figure painting will never be at
a level as high as some of those masters, but it
has been very enjoyable using the microscope
and better brushes.
After priming the figure’s faces with Tamiya’s
Suface Primer.G and then base coated with
Vallejo #804 Beige Red. After painting in the
eyes with a light flesh tone for the “whites” and
blue and black for the pupils, they were outlined
in a Beige Red/Mahogany Brown mix. Shadows
and highlights were painted in gradually giving
the faces some character.

The whole idea of this project was to display
the set of figures with an indicative tank of that

were fought in warm weather for some part, and

FEATURE ARTICLE Tamiya 1:35 Marder III Ausf. M • Kit No. 35255
MIGHTY MARDER
John Bonanni brings Tamiya’s original Marder III Ausf. M
into the fight with aftermarket upgrades and a bit of foliage.
D
eveloped to combat the more
advanced Soviet tanks, such as the
KV-1 and T-34, the Marder III was
based on the Panzer 38(t) chassis.
In total 1,736 vehicles were produced in three
variants from 1942 to 1944. The last variant,
Marder III Ausf. M mounted the venerable
75mm Pak 40 anti-tank gun in the rear of the
vehicle. With the engine being relocated to the
front the vehicles new configuration enabled a
lower silhouette and more room in the fighting
compartment. The Ausf. M saw action on all
fronts and served until the end of the war.
At the time of Tamiya’s Marder III Ausf.
M release in 2002 it was the only injection
moulded plastic kit available. Since then,
Dragon and Hobby Boss have introduced
options along with a Tamiya rerelease.
Tamiya’s new Ausf. M “Normandy Front”
release replaces the rubber band style tracks
in favour of link and length, adds more crew
figures, and supplies a radio set.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Once again Tamiya delivers a top-notch

construction and allowed me to focus on the
models finish. I’m also pleased how the foliage

rereleased this kit with upgraded and additional
parts. It will surely be a favourite with armour
modellers and I look forward to getting it to

KIT NO.7577
This is a re-issue of the earlier version of this model Kit No. 7483. The box
has the orange flash that indicates the new boxing format. The contents are
exactly the same as the earlier version, so there is no compromise in quality.
The box is the new end opening type that has replaced the old tray style. It
has a nice colour picture of the vehicle on the front and the colour schemes
for two vehicles on the reverse.
It would appear that the kit represents a later version of the Sd.Kfz. 231 as
indicated by the vision slits and the slightly different turret front. In the box
are three sprues, one which comprises of three separate lettered parts, the
hull bottom, turret and transfers. The instruction sheet is an A4 sheet of paper
folded and only contains the assembly sequence and no colour references.
The sprues are labelled A and B with sprues C, E, F as one separate sprue.
Sprue A has the suspension parts and tyres; these are nicely moulded and
appear flash free. There is a fair amount of detail incorporated and the wheel
faces are well done, unfortunately due to the moulding process there is no
tyre tread evident.
Sprue B has the fenders and other ancillary parts to make them up; again
these are nicely moulded and appear flash free. The exhaust has been
moulded with a representation of the mesh that covered it, it appear quite
good and if painted up carefully should be as good atr representation of this
feature that you could wish for. The width indicators are a little on the chunky
side and would be best replaced.
The third sprue consists of sub sprues C, E, and F. The C sprue has the spare
wheel brush guards and weapons. Also on this sprue is the rear armoured
cover, this is shown as an option in the instructions, but is best left off as the
later versions didn’t have this feature. The E sprue contains the turret base
and the turret front and hatch, it also has the front and rear plates for the
superstructure. The F sprue has the parts for the spaced nose armour, some
Jerry cans and the Notek light. All the parts are well moulded and have no
flash evident. On the spaced armour there is a cable moulded on and looks
clumsy, this would be best removed.
The upper and lower hulls are well cast with some nice details, especially
around the hatches; the transmission detail on the underside of the lower hull
is nicely represented. They fit together well with no gaps to fill.
The turret is a single moulding with the exterior vision ports well represented,
the hatch is moulded open and is crying out for a figure to be placed in it.
There was a large piece of flash on the join of the roof to the rear plate, but
this is the only piece and can be easily removed.
The decal sheet is very basic with some early Balkenkreuz, the number plates
are white blanks and left for you to fill in
with either WH or the Sig runes and some
appropriate numbers. The Sig runes are
in two parts and need careful placement
to produce the double lightning bolts, I
have used these before and with a little
patience they work very well.
I would recommend this kit as a fine
representation of the type and it should
build up well.
Highly Recommended.

that shouldn’t be reviewing this piece because it’s firstly
not really a military subject and secondly it is already
available as part of the quite superb Hasegawa Isuzu

a little better than the Hasegawa offering and it can be

simple in breakdown and easy to put together with the
