This invention relates to an additive or supple~
ment for increasing the efficiency of gasoline as an engine
fuel.
The principal object of the invention is to provide
an economical, highly efficient additive solution which can
be added in comparatively small quantities to commercial
gasoline and which will act to increase the efficiency of
combustion of the gasoline so as to increase the mileage per
gallon.
Another object of the invention is to provide a
gasoline supplement of the above characteristics which will
act both as a detergent to remove accumulations of gum and
sludge from the fuel passages, valves, etc., and which will
also act to prevent the formation of the objectionable gums,
sludges, and other deleterious products.
‘A further object 1s to provide a gasoline supple~
ment which will cause more complete combustion of the gas—
line so as to reduce ash and carbon deposits in the engine
and in the engine exhaust system.
‘A etill further object 1s to provide a combust~
ability improving supplement for gasoline which will inhibit
oxidation and corrosion of the engine fuel passages and which
will prevent oxidation of any metals or metal salts present
in the gasoline.
Briefly, the improved gasoline supplement comprises
rie

the combination of combustion improving chemicals, sludge
solvents, catalysts, corrosion inhibitors and anti~oxldizers
4n a single highly concentrated fluid compoung, minute quan
tithes of which can be added to relatively large volumes of
gasoline either at the refinery or in the fuel tank of an
automotive vehicle.
As a combustion improver, the improved supplement
employs formaldehyde preferably as a solution of hemiacetal
of monomeric and polymeric formaldehyde dissolved in methyl
alcohol. such a solution is on the market under the name of
“pethyl formcel" and is more particularly used in the formation
of plastic and resin compounds. It has been found that "methyl
formeel" will form a continuous phase with the organic com-
pounds of gasoline to produce a more intimate mixture and a
more complete combustion of the hydrocarbons,
As a gum ana sludge solvent, the improved supple~
ment employs an acrylic ester and acrylic resin solution such
a8 @ product known on the chemical market as "Acryloid #423"
which has been found to be highly effective as a dispersant
and stabilizer in liquid petroleum fuels. It is entirely
organic, contains no metals to contribute to the formation of
deposits and is completely ashless. Acryloid 423 has the
following properties:
Gravity, CAPT 31.5

To assist in the dispersing and solvent action,
methylene dimethyl ether and an acrylic ester and acrylic
resin solution is employed. The methylene dimethyl ether is
available under the trade name of "Methylal". The Methylal
is a low boiling chemical of powerful solvent properties and
is a rapid and efficient solvent and dispersant for the
acrylics and other resins present. A further dispersant
is used in the form of 2, 4, 6 = tri (dimethylaminiomethyl)
phenol known under the trade name of DMP #30.
The dispersing properties of the DMP #30 is assisted
and greatly increased by the addition of additional dimethyl-
aminoethyl phenal to the DMP #30. The additional dimethlamino-
ethylphenol is available on the open market under the trade
name of "DMP #10".
As a metal deactivator, propanediamine is employed.
This is also available on the chemical market under the name
of D.M.D., which is an 80% solution of N.Nt-disalicylidene
1, 2 propanediamine in an organic solvent. It acts to im-
Prove stability, inhibit metal corrosion and appears to act
as a catalyst to increase the efficiency of the other active
ingredients.657788
For preventing oxidation and to increase the sta~
bility of the final gasoline mixture, butyl~para~phenylene
diamine 1s employed. This 1s also available on the market as
a complete mixture under the name of DuPont #22. It acts to
prevent oxidation of the unstable hydrocarbon components so
as to prevent the formation of undesirable oxide sludge de+
posits.
While the above ingredients are available upon the
open market for various chemical uses, their use for the pur~
poses of this invention and the combination of the elements
as hereinafter described have not heretofore been suggested.
In the invention, the above ingredients are combined in
proper proportions in a suitable carrier or solvent to pro~
vide a concentrated liquid which can be readily introduced
4n minute quantities into gasoline. Isopropyl aleohol, toluol
and kerosene provide a suitable carrier or solvent. ‘The
Asopropyl alcohol, in addition to its carrier action, acts
to provide additional energy as well as to act to prevent Loe
formation from any water present.
The preferred formula for a 56 gallon drum of the
Y Amproved gasoline additive is as follows:
Methylene dimethyl ether (Methylal) 6 gals.
Acrylicester & acrylic resin solution (Acryloid 425) 1 gal.
2,°4, 6 = tri (@imethylemino-methyl) phenol (DMP #50) 1 gal.
Diméthylaminoe thy1phenol (DMP #10) ldgals.
Hemiacetal of monomeric & polymeric
formaldehyde in methyl alcohol (Methyl Formeel) 1/8gal.657788
Propanediamine (DMD) 10 oz.
Butyl-para~phenylene diamine (Dupont #22) 22 oz.
Isopropyl alcohol 16 gals.
Toluol 20 1/8gals
Kerosene 10 gals.
Total 55 gals.
Resolving to parts the formula would read:
Methylene dimethyl ether 10.90 parts
Acrylic ester acrylic resin solution 1.85 parts
2, 4, 6 - tri (dimethylamino~methyl) phenol 1.85 parts
Dime thy1~asine@thy1~phenol 2.72 parts

Total 100.00 parte
For best economy and best results, one gallon of
the above intermixture 1s added to each 1000 gallons of gas
oline or .126 oz. per gallon.
the above formula 1s for automobile and truck gas
tank uses. For use in extremely high gallonage such as at
a refinery where the supplement would be used in tank car
quantities, » more concentrated solution would be preferred.
the formula for a concentrated solution of 1 gallon
of the supplement would be as follows:
~5-657788
Methylene dimethyl ether (Methylal) 42 oz.
Acrylicester & acrylic resin solus
tion (Acryloid #423 8 oz.
2, 4, 6 = tri (aimethyl-amino-methyl)
phenol (DMP #50) 8 oz.
Dimethylaminoethylphenol (DMP #10) 16 oz.
Hemiacetal of monomeric & polymeric
formaldehyde in methyl alcohol (Methyl Formeel) 16 ml.

For the most efficient and economic results 1
gallon of the above concentrated solution 1s added to each
4000 gallons of gasoline or .032 oz. per gallon.

2, 4, 6 ~ tri (dimethylamino-methyl) phenol 6.260 parts
Dimethylaminoethyl phenol 12.500 parts

Toluol 15.625 parts
Kerosene 6.250 parts
Total 100 parts657788
The above ingredients are intermixed at room tem
perature and at atmospheric pressure.
Actual accurate road tests of the above supple
ment have shown an increase RPM without change in throttle
setting of from 2000 to 5000 RPM and a horsepower increase of
from 44 to 60.
A test upon 60 trucks having an average of 7.85
miles per gallon’ before treatment with this improved supple-
ment showed an increase to an average of 8.67 miles per
Gallon after treatment.
It can be seen from the above formulae that the
proportions of the ingredients can be varied within kimits
depending upon the concentrations desired. The variations,
however, should be between the regular formula and the concen+
trated formula given above.
It has been found that the tri (dimethylamino~methyl)
phenol may be omitted without noticeably affecting the results,
It has been further found that the addition of a small per=
centage (say 4%) of tertiary alkyl primary aliphalic armine
will assist in the stabilization of Diesel fuels and increase
the sludge inhibiting properties of the additive. The latter
product is available upon the chemical market under the trade
name of "Primene 61-R". For burner fuels, it is preferred
to add magesium sulphide to the preferred formula above
in the amount of 5%.
