Mixture Problem
1. One kind of candy (jelly) sells for $5 a pound and another (chocolate) for $10 a pound. How many pounds of
each should be used to make a mixture of 10 pounds of candy (both kinds) that sells for $80?
2. A 20% concentrate is to be mixed with a mixture having a concentration of 60% to obtain 80 liters of a
mixture with a concentration of 30%. How much of the 20% concentrate and the 60% concentrate will be
needed?
3. How many liters of 20% alcohol solution should be added to 40 liters of a 50% alcohol solution to make a
30% solution?
4. John wants to make a 100 ml of 5% alcohol solution mixing a quantity of a 2% alcohol solution with a 7%
alcohol solution. What are the quantities of each of the two solutions (2% and 7%) he has to use?

traveled at 45 kilometers per hour, how many more minutes would it have taken to make the trip?
3. An executive drove from home at an average speed of 30 mph to an airport where a helicopter was waiting.
The executive boarded the helicopter and flew to the corporate offices at an average speed of 60 mph. The
entire distance was 150 miles; the entire trip took three hours. Find the distance from the airport to the

4. A car and a bus set out at 2 p.m. from the same point, headed in the same direction. The average speed of
the car is 30 mph slower than twice the speed of the bus. In two hours, the car is 20 miles ahead of the bus.

5. A passenger train leaves the train depot 2 hours after a freight train left the same depot. The freight train is
traveling 20 mph slower than the passenger train. Find the rate of each train, if the passenger train overtakes
the freight train in three hours.
6. Car 1 starts from point A and heads for point B at 60 mph. Fifteen minutes later, car 2 leaves the same point
A and heads for point B at 75 mph. How long before car 2 overtakes car 1?
7. A bus and a car leave the same place and traveled in opposite directions. If the bus is traveling at 50 mph
