A. In this lesson students learned about seeds. More specifically, they learned how they travel and purpose they provide humans. Also through this lesson, the students got the opportunity to discover which types of seeds they can eat and which types of seeds they cannot. At the end of the lesson the students got to taste test an assortment of nuts. B. In this particular segment of the video I am reading the book titled, A Seed is Sleepy, written by Dianna Hutts Aston and Sylvia Long. This clipping captures the middle portion of my science lesson. Before this, I had introduced the topic of the lesson and lead a whole group discussion. The reason why I choose this segment of the lesson was because this was where I got in a block of the science content. The other reason why I chose this particular segment was this is where I felt I could integrate some of the ideas we have been learning about in class. C. The focus of my analysis was on my use of the children’s book and on the effect it had on my students overall learning. II. Reflection A. After watching the ten minute video clip from my lesson I noticed there were some things I did well. For one, I thought my pacing was good. I spoke clearly and took the time to show the students the beautiful illustrations that the seed had. Also, as I read I emphasized the main points and ideas that the author had mentioned. I did this by rephrasing and I tried to reword those ideas so that if the students did not understand what I said the first time they could have another opportunity. Also, during the beginning of the reading I made a connection between one idea the author mentioned to one of the ideas that one of the students wrote down on their first sticky note. By doing so I was able to confirm that the students ideas was indeed true and that they know more about the topic of seeds than they had thought they did. In addition to this, I also made the connection between the embryo of a seed and a baby growing in the mother's tummy. In how a baby is protected by their mother and is kept warm. B. Although there were specific elements in my lesson that I thought I did well there were also some elements that I would want to change. If I were to give this lesson Palajac 2 again I would provide a better definition of the word “dash”. This question was one that I was not expecting and therefore, did not have the greatest answer for the students at the time. Also, after I would have given the student a proper definition I would have asked them if what I had said made sense. Looking back I feel that there was more than one student who did not understand what the word “dash” meant, instead only one student was brave enough to ask. With this said, I believe that providing a proper definition of the term would have helped more than just one student. Another element of my lesson that I would change would be to provide more wait time after I had asked the students questions. I noticed in the video that after I had asked a question instead of me taking the time and calling on a student to give their answer, I instead answered it. By doing this I think I could have made this portion of my lesson more interactive and engaging. C. From this video I learned that I as a teacher, do a good job of creating a warm and comfortable environment for my students. In other words, I am very personable and as a result the students tend to be more open to asking questions and answering my questions. Also by creating this type of environment I am able to encourage my students to participate even if they are uncertain if what they have to say is or at all accurate. Also from the video, I noticed that as a teacher I would like to make sure that all of my students have the opportunity to be heard. I try to call on different students in class and try to prevent any one student from overpowering class discussions. D. As a result of this experience and my analysis of me teaching I have created two specific goals for myself. My first goal is to ask my students more challenging questions that require more than one word responses. This will require my students to think critically and really dive deep into what they already know. My second goal is to try to eliminate my use of filler words for example the word “um”. Although I have made some improvement if I were to compare this video clip to my freshman year Metaphor Presentation, there is still room for improvement. In the video, I caught myself using the word “um” a total of four times and with this goal I hope to reduce this number even lower.
