Instructions to the candidates.. '

i) Answers to the two sections should be written in separate answer books.

ii) Neat diagrams must be drawn wherever necf!ssary.
iii) Figures to the right indicate full marks.
iv) Use of logarithmic tables, slide rule, Mollier charts, electronic pocket
calculator and steam tables is allowed. .

v) Assume suitable data, if necessary.

SECTION-I
Ql) a) Explain DTMF dialer and its significance. [4]
b) Briefly explain various subscriber loop' signalling systems used in
Telephone Switching. [4]
c) Briefly explain role of redundancy in SPC blectronics switching systems.
A fully redundent SPC system makes use of two processors in load
sharing configuration~ If individual MTBF and MTTR figures of the
processors are 5000 ills and 5 hrs respectively; determine the non
availability of SPC switching system over ten years period for a (1 + 1)
redundancy configuration. Suggest a typical configuration to further
reduce the nonavailability to less thana second., [10]
OR
Q2) a) Distinguish between the terms Connectivity and Blocking for Telecom
Switching Systems. . .
[4]
b) . Briefly explain the concept ~fTime Division Ti~e Switching, indicating
, how switching capacity can be increased using random input / random
output configuration. [7] ,
c) With the help of neat diagram explain the principle of Time' Division
Space Switching for time multiplexed trunk switching applications. Time
multiplexed streams having 40 channels in each stream are switched using
a Time Division Space Switch. Assuming time required to access control
memory as 0.1 microseconds and time required to switch plus transfer
as 25 nanoseconds, determine number trunks each switch can support.
, [7]

P.T.D.
Q3) a) Explain a typical hour-by-hou~ traffic pattern of a voice network during
a working day. Also define the term Grade of Service. [5]
b) Defme and explain the 'Eriang C' formula for .blocking probability and
- list the assumptions made in this context. [5]
c) In a system the maximum calls/hour is 360 and average holding time is
120 seconds. Assuming blocking probability of 0.01, determine
. i) Traffic Intensity in Eriangs and CCS .

ii) Number of servers required to handle the traffic.

Use the data in Table-I, if required. [6]
OR

Q4) a) What' are different traffic measuretnent units in telecommunication

engineering. Explain them in details. (5]
b) Defme and explain the "Eriang B" formula for blocking probability due
to congestion. [5]
c) Following data is collected to estimate voice traffic during one hour
period. (6]
Call No. Call Duration in Seconds.
1 72
2 93
3 87
4 64
5 49
6 55
Calculate the traffic intensity in Eriangs and CCS. You may also use data
in Table-I, if requ~ed.

Q5) a) What is ISDN? With the help of neat diagram explain the ISDN reference
~~. ~
b) With the help of neat sketches explain different services supported by
ISDN. (8]
OR

Q6) a) Explain in detail the ISDN architecture and list the benefits of ISDN.
[8]
b) Explain in detail the Frame Relay and its significance. [8]

SECTION - II
Q7) a) Draw the architecture of GSM system and explain in detail various
functional entities. [10]
b) A cellular system has been allocated 400 voice ch~nnel frequencies.
Assuming uniform traffic with average call holding of 120 seconds
and call blocking during busy hour as 2%, determine.
i) Number calls per cell site per hour.
ii) Mean S"JIin dBs for reuse factor of 4. .
Assume omnidirectional antennas with six interferers in the fIrst tier and
slope for path loss as 40 dBs/decade.
Use the data in Table-I, if required. [8]
OR

Q8) a) Describe and explain in details various logical channels used in GSM
system. [8]
b) Explain various Access Technologies used in cellular mobile
communications and list their features. [7]
c) If the load carried by the network is 1920 CCS, determine the offered
load assuming blocking probability as four percents. [3]

Q9) a) . With the help of neat diagram explain the architecture of IS 95 CDMA
system. . [10]
b) With toe help of neat diagram explain the concept of CDMA/FDD
system. [6]
OR
QI0)a) Explain the forward link channels structure of IS-95 CDMA system.
[8]
b) What are different call processing states in CDMA system? Explain
anyone in details. . [8]

Ql1)a) What are Real Time Protocols (RTP)? Explain different RTPs and li~t
their applications. [8]
