Simplification item catalog

 ~3 new items: no new industries or big add-ons did join SAP S/4HANA with 1909.

 Solaris taxonomy was introduced to catalog, also used in other SAP tools like SAP
Transformation Navigator.

 Activities have been added to (almost) all simplification items.

− This shall allow customers to easily identify which type of activities they have to do in which phase of the
project for this specific Simplification Item.
− Activities integrated into Readiness Check 2.0 to give an activity view of the conversion project.

Maintenance Planner

 Use SAP S/4HANA tile - when starting from system view,

the frontend server would not be reflected in the plan

 Display of certified 3rd party add-ons:

If add-on was certified by ICC for the selected
SAP S/4HANA target release, then this add-on component
will be listed in a separate area, with a link to the
Certified Solution Directory

 Maintenance Planner 2.0 is in beta phase,

but will initially not be relevant for a system conversion planning

Simplification item checks

 Run SI checks manually early, with correct target release, and re-run repeatedly during project execution (on all
systems, in client 000 like SUM)

 Update related notes and SI catalog repeatedly until freeze phase (see SAP Note 2399707 for req. level)

 Helper report /SDF/RC_TROUBLE_SHOOT allows to run individual check in background

 "Check Consistency Details" is detailed check mode with in-depth analysis for individual simplification item, has longer
runtime

 Check the central blog https://blogs.sap.com/2018/03/26/sap-s4hana-simplification-item-check-how-to-do-it-right./

 Previous pre-check for targeting SAP S/4HANA 1511 and 1610 blocks conversion now
− SAP will no longer support a system conversion for a target release if there are two stable successor releases (on FPS02 or higher)
available (does not apply to installation or update/upgrade)
− Example: as soon as SAP S/4HANA 1909 FPS 02 is available, conversion to 1709 is no longer supported

 How to find
– Consistency check programs for any DB
– Schedule finance data clean-up as a pre-project

Conversion to SAP S/4HANA1909
SUM 2.0 SP 06 creates shadow repository on target database

 SAP Kernel 7.77 only supports SAP HANA database ->

shadow repository not possible on source database

 SUM 2.0 SP 06 creates SHD REP on target,

but not for processor SAP S/4HANA releases

 No manual interaction or dialog parameters required

 Potentially lower source database requirements,

but Unicode requirement for source system remains

 Restrictions with SUM 2.0 SP 06

on downtime-optimized DMO and “DMO with System Move”:
will not be supported for targeting SAP S/4HANA 1909 immediately, but with later SP version

 Scenario decision
− Without stack: benchmarking, CTI, …
− With stack: DMO
(not shown if required: conversion from non-HANA database)

 Scenario strategy: standard or downtime-optimized:

− Conversion from non-HANA database: uptime migration
− Conversion from SAP HANA database: nZDM
− SUM prerequisite check is offered on that dialog as well

 All SUM scenarios use same URL now

 nZDM is no longer hidden in Advanced Mode

Downtime optimization approaches
Overview

 Standard approach
using Software Update Manager (SUM)
with several optimizations

Downtime
Decision about approach
 Downtime-optimized conversion approach depends on several factors
downtime is reduced by moving data conversion and should be taken after a
and migration partly to uptime (currently only piloted); migration planning workshop.
(subset: Uptime Migration i.e. downtime-optimized DMO) (Service component of SAP Value
see SAP Note 2293733 Assurance for SAP S/4HANA)

 Near-Zero Downtime Technology approach

allows further reduction of downtime
by executing the conversion on a clone;

Effort
it is a consulting service project (aka NZDT),
see SAP Note 693168

Downtime-optimized conversion approach
Migration and conversion happens partly in uptime

 Table conversion moved to uptime processing

 Field conversion moved to uptime processing (KONV and VBFA tables)
 Uptime migration for selected big application tables (which are not part of the data conversion)

SUM Uptime Ramp Post FI & ML Business Ramp

Migration Update Conversion

Conversion partially moved to uptime for

− FIN and Material Ledger (MM-ML)
& Inventory Management (MM-IM)
− KONV and VBFA tables Migration is only relevant for source systems on non-HANA database

Uptime Migration (Downtime-optimized DMO approach)

 Uptime migration for selected big application tables, general available with SUM 2.0 SP 06
− Only applies to tables that are not affected by the data conversion / new data model
− Only applicable if source is on non-HANA database (otherwise no migration is required)

Silent Data Migration
for SAP S/4HANA release upgrades
1809 1909 1909

Upgrade Operations

 Data migration to new data model happens after upgrade to new release

 Example: new field for table ACDOCA

− New field ACTVALDAT is created empty during upgrade to SAP S/4HANA 1909
− After upgrade, business continues as usual, and silent data migration fills new field in background
− SUM offers to create users for background activity
− SAP Application continues to work without impact on business process
− The succeeding major release of 1909 requires the content of field ACTVALDAT

 Approach requires the upgrades to follow release sequence step by step,

no jump upgrade allowed that skips a release
