In my presentation today, I'm going to talk about the role of civil engineering in society.
Basically, I've divided this presentation into three parts.
In the first part, I'll talk about the importance of the civil engineering.
Then, in the second part, I'll look at the Contribution of Civil Engineering to modern life.
And to finish off. I’ll focus on some myths about civil engineer projects.
Now I'd like to move onto the first part of my presentation, Civil engineering is one of the
oldest engineering professions and nowadays Civil engineers are becoming more and more
important within society. The field of civil engineering is about community service,
development and improvement, planning, design, construction, and operation of facilities
essential to modern life. For example, Civil engineers are responsible for building good
quality transportation systems like highways, airports, rail lines and sea ports.
The scope of civil engineering also includes responsibility for environmental and social
impact, which are important for developed or underdeveloped cities. The function of civil
engineers within society can be divided into the following three categories, depending on
the steps in construction practice: those performed before construction, during
construction, and after construction.
In the first step feasibility studies, site investigation, and design works are carried out in
order to make sure that the proposed project is meaningful and executable.
In the second step, which is the main part of the project, closer co-operation among clients,
consulting engineers, and contractors is extremely important to complete the construction
projects successfully.
Finally, in the third step, it is extremely important that maintenance effort is applied to keep
the structures alive, in the sense of function as well as physical quality.
In addition to these three categories, investigation activities or research are also important
to solve the practical problems encountered during the course of construction works and
to gain more advanced knowledge on design and execution of construction.
Next I'd like to look at my second point today, the Contribution of Civil Engineering to
modern life, civil engineers are basically giving shape to the history of our nations.
Throughout history, civil engineers have designed and built facilities that have advanced
civilization and provided for a higher standard of living. Civil Engineers have been building
things since 2980 B.C. when the Egyptian Pyramids were being built, to a more recent
modern marvel of the Golden Gate Bridge that was the longest single span bridge in the
world in 1937. Now Let´s look some projects which has made a huge impact in the modern
life.
All of this innovation and construction ties back to one main purpose, supporting human
life.
In the final part, I’ll focus on some myths about civil engineer projects. In my opinion the
most famous myth is that civil engineers nearly always want to build regular building, in
other words rectangular buildings. But it’s not totally true, there are several reason why at
the end builds look in that way.Let’s me explain a simple example.
Civil engineers have a very important role in today’s society. We are the people behind the
scenes of construction jobs which result in important buildings and structures within cities.
They guarantee not only that the buildings are constructed in a proper way. When problems
arise, civil engineers are problem solvers and we are the ones who step in to take control
and come up with possible solutions. Now imagine a world without civil engineers and you
might end up thinking of a world of disordered proportions. So the next time when you watch
a construction or project no matter what simple it is, close your eyes and think that, breathe
a sigh behind these structures are civil engineers who have done a huge effort and applied
the knowledge and abilities to keep our modern world intact.
