Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks
Engage: Students will come into the classroom and sit in their seats. To begin the lesson, students will be asked
their thoughts on standardized tests.
Explore: Students can share personal experiences in school with standardized tests. The teacher should call on
several students in order to receive different experiences and opinions. Depending on the year they were in school,
standardized tests may vary. Students could have taken HSPA, NJASK, or PARCC; these answers should very and
allow students to compare and contrast the differences.
Explain: After a multitude of responses from the students, the students will be taught about standardized tests
through the slideshow presentation. The slideshow will contain 6 different slides. The first will be The History,
then No Child Left Behind, Every Student Succeeds Act, Pros, Cons and The Cost.
Elaborate: Once the slideshow presentation is complete, students will be prompted to log onto Kahoot.it and enter
the participation code in order to get into the group. The kahoot will have different questions for the students to
answer independently as they show up on the screen.
During the informal assessments, students will know it is ok to not have the correct answer because there may not
be one- depending on the questions. Certain questions may be open to interpretation. However, in regards to the
facts of standardized testing, extra help will be provided if they are confused.. The objective checklist is used to
assess that the students have met the objectives of the lesson.
Closure: Students are asked to come up with one positive experience with standardized tests and one negative
experience with standardized tests. This gives students an opportunity to use higher level thinking and the students
should be able apply what they have learned to a real-life situation that is their own.
The lesson includes language arts because the students are asked to read questions on the kahoot and provide
thoughtful responses from the given choices.
