A set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects known as elements. An example of a set is the set
of the days of the week, whose elements are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday. We use capital letters to name sets. For example, we can use W to represent the set of the
days of the week. There are three methods that can be used to denote a set:
• Description
• Roster : elements of a set are listed
• Set-builder : a shorthand used to write sets, often sets with an infinite number of elements.
There are two types of sets:
• Finite: sets that have a fixed number of elements.
• Infinite: sets that have an uncountable number of elements.
The empty set, also called the null set, is the set that contains no elements. The empty set is
represented by { } or ∅.

4. List the elements of the following sets:
(a) {x|x is a number greater than 10 and less than 4}
(c) nothing
(d ) {∅}
The symbol ∈ is used to indicate that an object is an element of a set. The symbol ∈ is used to replace
the words “is an element of.” The symbol ∈ / is used to indicate that an object is not an element of a
set. The symbol ∈/ is used to replace the words “is not an element of.”

N = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, . . .}
(b) Set B is the set of natural numbers greater than or equal to 25.

Subset of a Set
(c) A = {x|x is a letter in the word roof } and B = {x|x is a letter in the word proof },
so A B.
(d ) A = {x|x is a letter in the word proof } and A = {x|x is a letter in the word roof },
so A B.
Venn Diagrams
A universal set, symbolized by U , is a set that contains all the elements being considered in a given
discussion or problem. Two sets that have no elements in common are called disjoint sets. The
complement of a set A, symbolized by A0 , is the set of all elements in the universal set that are not in
A.
A0 = {x|x ∈ U and x ∈ / A}
The intersection of sets A and B written A ∩ B is the set of elements common to both set A and set
B.
A ∩ B = {x|x ∈ A and x ∈ B}
The union of sets A and B written A ∪ B is the set of elements that are members of set A and set B
or of both sets.
A ∪ B = {x|x ∈ A or x ∈ B}

lowing regions:
