Question # 5

1. What are the characteristics of the four categories of directive and supportive behaviors?

"Leadership styles can be classified further into four distinct categories of directive and supportive behaviors"
These categories include:

 Directing
- A high-directive-low supportive style in which goal achievement is the focus of this approach with minimum
supportive behaviors. A leader in this role will provide specific instructions and then supervise an employee's
performance vigilantly.
 Coaching
- A high directive-high supportive style. "In this approach, the leader focuses communication on both goal
achievement and maintenance of subordinates' socioemotional needs"
 Supportive
- A high-supportive-low directive style. "In this approach, the leader does not focus exclusively on goals but
uses supportive behaviors that bring out the employee's skills around the task to be accomplished"
 Delegating
- A low supportive-low directive style. "In this approach, the leader offers less task input and social
support, facilitating employees' confidence and motivation in reference to the task"
2. What are the characteristics of each of the four levels by which employee development can be classified?

The four categories are D1, D2, D3, and D4.

 D1 is individuals with low competence and high commitment

 D2 is some competence and low commitment.
 D3 is moderate to high competence and low commitment.
 D4 is high competence and high commitment.

3. How does the development continuum work?

The developmental continuum within the situational approach shows that employees either move
backward or forward on the developmental continuum, relative to the commitment and competence. It is a scale
system on which employees and followers can progress and digress over time.

4. Explain why it might be difficult for some leaders to exhibit style 4 leadership.

- It might be difficult for leaders to exhibit this kind of leadership because it is a low-supportive

-low directive style in which the leader gives control to subordinates.

- The low support low directive style is hard for some, because it means completely relying on others.

5. How do demographic characteristics affect employees’ preferences for a particular leadership style?

 Followers that have more education and work experience desire less structure than those with little to no
education or work experience.
 Older followers desire more structure than the younger followers
 Female followers mostly preferred supportive leadership while male followers mostly preferred directive
leadership.
 Different groups of people prefer different leadership styles based on their past experiences.
