The Effects of the Availability of School Facilities on the Quality of Education

in BSIT Program in Naval State University

Background of the Study

Interpretation of quality education comes from diverse perspectives. But some scholars

claim that quality means meeting the standards. In meeting this global context of quality education,

partly the availability of school facilities becomes one of the key indicators of educational quality

(Nkong, George, & Mohamadou, 2016).

The key purpose of teaching and learning process is to carry-out a considerable change in

behaviour and attitude through active participation and critical thinking of a learner. In aid of a

successful teaching and learning process, school facilities are considered means to maximize the

whole learning capability of a learner. On a note, quality education can be made available if

educational materials are available and are utilized in a learning institution; be it a university or a

primary school to start. It is even further claimed that resources are ways through which

organizational activities, service and satisfactory ends are attainable. (Afework & Asfaw, 2014)

Resources are represented in various forms such as men, money, machine and method. Any

activity that lacks one of those resources; there will really be problems that will come forth. Thus,

emphasizing that, those four forms of resources are equally important. A concrete example is

having a teacher without any aid of educational materials and school facilities. The teacher may

be able to teach the students solely but it can’t go and reach quality learning unless otherwise

educational materials and facilities are made use.

School facilities are comprised of all types of buildings that are used for academic and non-

academic purposes, equipment, classroom facilities, furniture, instructional materials, audio visual
aids, comfort rooms, IC Technology, learning resource centre and laboratory materials that play a

smooth running of the teaching and learning process. School facilities should not end in the stage

of availability but has to break from it and be sufficient in quantity and in quality. (Afework &

Asfaw, 2014)

In the Island Province of Biliran, there is this academic community which upholds quality

education. This academic community is the only university in the province. It is named: Naval

State University. There are many programs in the university; one of which is the Bachelor of

Science in Industrial Technology. It is an imperative that the school must have laboratories and

school facilities needed by the BSIT students.

For the continued development of the program, the researcher wants to assess the

availability of the school facilities of the university and what are the effects of it to the quality

education of BSIT Program.

Statement of the Problem

This present work is designed to assess the effects of the availability of school facilities on

the quality of education in BSIT Program in Naval State University. To provide information to the

gap of knowledge expressed in the general research objective, this paper seeks to achieve these

following sub-research objectives:

1. To determine the profile of the students in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Year Level

1.4 Status of Enrolment;

2. To evaluate the availability of school facilities for the BSIT Program in Naval State

University;

3. To distinguish the effects of the availability of school facilities on the quality of education;

4. To make recommendations to further improve the quality education for the program’s

development.
