CHAPTER 27: Virtuality

From 2d to 3d

3d – helps you relate to the story, vrc s

Virtual reality is part of our life, we use to communicate and to foresee the future

Deluezian Sense

The virtual and the real are linked, a tension between them

If an image is never built, is it still considered as architecture?

‘’the older seeing the screen in space, the younger the screen as a space’’ (chapter 27 pg 494)

Daario naharis

Peter zumthor

Photography can manipulate reality. virtuality may be seen as a lie. A camera can put things out of
context.

Virtuality is A depiction of reality, it can be an illusion. Images deceive you.

It depends on how much you know, you criticize on what you know. Culture and knowledge make a
difference – there is no good and bad, just different views.

What message you want to deliver. Renders are more monumental.

Virtual vs Actual

Both virtual and actual are real. They both co-exist, firms exist which are visualizers.

Perspective vs isometric

Le Corbusier vs Peter Eisenman

You can just do architectural plans, but you wont feel the space.
ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY
Technology has become an extension of us. The sum of things we produce in pursuit of a better life.
can be tangible – furniture clothes etc

Intangible – forms of entertainment, commercials, movies etc

Our body is a tomb which helps us survive the world.

Oral cultures –

Visual cultures –

With writing we become less aware of the reactions of people. We have to focus on the medium.

The effect is the message. Using mediums is the key message. Every medium is affecting the
environment. You create attention.

Social media, our cars, technology have become an integral part of our society the sometimes if you
are denied access to them you will feel as sense of loss as they contain memories within them.

TRANSPARENT TO OQABUE

The focus on the task and the tool is withdrawn from the users consciousness

Opaque – the focus is no longer on the task but rather on inputting data in the machine to give us a
final product e.g. microwave – it does something for you, it isn’t a direct expression of your thought.

You ask the brick what it wants to be – louis kahn

When you model you understood the knowledge on how it needs to be built. (in contrast to 3d
modelling where you can’t feel it, just see it) - The mouse (pointer is the microwave). When you draw
digitally you do not experience the scale of the project. A 3d model is never the same to the reality.
