Introduction Based on the novel I have learnt in Form 5, Sing to the Dawn by
(Paragraph 1) Minfong Ho, one character who I truly admire is Dawan. The story is
about a village girl, named Dawan, who has won a scholarship that
grants her the chance to further her studies in the city school. Growing
up in a village where gender inequality towards women and girls are
practiced, she has to face the obstacles before she can go to the city as
she does not get the support from her father. Dawan struggles to get the
support from Noi, the head monk and Kwai to convince her father so she
can make her dreams come true. I admire Dawan as she shows
determination and caring yet timid at times.
Content The first reason on why I admire Dawan is because she is a
Ideas determined young girl as she insists to study in the city school, even
(Paragraph 2) though many people including her brother and father disagree with the
idea. Dawan works really hard to convince her father to give her the
permission. In fact, Dawan does not give up on her dream although she
learnt from Noi that the city is a cruel and dangerous place to live in.
Instead, she becomes even more motivated to learn how the whole
system works in order to help her village when she said, “I want to see
for myself”. In addition to that, Dawan also confronts her father during
dinner about letting her go to the city school. However, the father scolds
her by saying that schooling would have been more useful for Kwai, not
Dawan. When Dawan realizes that Noi and her mother will not be able
to help her convince father, she tries to seek eternal support from the
monk. This proves that, Dawan does not easily surrender when facing
challenges. However, Dawan is disappointed when the head monk does
not support her going to the city school only because she is a girl when
the monk said, “You are just a mere girl.”

Introduction Based on the novel I have learnt in Form 5, Dear Mr. Kilmer by
(Paragraph 1) Anne Schraff, Richard Knight is a good role model because he has
many excellent qualities. The one quality that I find most heart-
warming is his desire to understand his family members. The story
is about Richard who has a passion in writing poetry. However, his
family does not approve his passion. Richard struggles to gain his
family’s approval in writing poetry and to support Hannah after her
family’s tavern is vandalised. Richard is the only one who befriends
Hannah Schermer because she is of German descent.
Content Richard is a 15-year-old boy who lives on a farm with his Pa,
Ideas brother Gus and sister Angie. Although they are a family, “he could not
(Paragraph 2) help thinking how little he resembled his Pa or his brother or
sister.” However, it does not deter him from wanting to get closer to
them, especially Pa. He does his part, helping on the farm or giving a
hand to Angie whenever he could. He is tolerant towards Gus even
though his older brother picks on him relentlessly.
(Paragraph 3) At school, Richard demonstrates his strength of character in
dealing with his classmates, especially the bullies, Abner and Harry.
When they challenge Hannah’s patriotism and the Lady Liberty role she
won, Richard stands by her although he is ridiculed by the students. By
signing the card, Richard displays his leadership skills and his
ability to face challenges without fear or favour.

(Paragraph 4) In his passion for poems, Richard takes the opportunity to write
to Joyce Kilmer, which I think is a bold move. This shows his ambition
to become a better poet by learning from the best. He cultivates a lasting
friendship with Kilmer until his untimely death. Through him, Richard
learns about the war that killed him, about nature, people and, mostly
importantly, why poets “play a very important part in this world.”
Closing In conclusion, I have chosen Richard Knight as a good role model
(Paragraph 5) because Richard is warm, friendly and humble. In his last letter to
Kilmer, Richard writes, “I’m just a farm kid and that I’ve got a lot to
learn. I’m very grateful for all I’ve learned from you already.”
