INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Philippines has developed and is able to compete overseas. Since that,

other countries already implemented K to 12 curriculum, the 10-year education

program in the Philippines was been changed in order for student to become

globally competitive. K to 12 system basically includes the universe

kindergarten, 6 years of elementary, 4 years of junior high school with an

additional 2 years foe senior high school. The program aims to uplift and

develop the quality of education in the Philippines in emotional and cognitive

aspects. It will be a stronger foundation for education of the students. (Canete,

2016).

In the implementation of K to 12 program, Senior High School Curriculum

offers different tracks: Academic, Technical Vocational and Livelihood, Sport

and Arts Design. If are really not sure if you we be able to pursue any degree

after Senior high or if you want to earn money immediately after graduation,

then Technical Vocation and Livelihood is suit for you. Even without college,

Technical -Vocation -Livelihood track will train you with job ready skills in the

future. It is also the recognized standard for student and professionals globally,

may also help then to find a particular job where they will proceed their dreams

without entering college.

Among the four tracks in Senior High School, Technical Vocational

Livelihood track are areas in which you will trained in a job-ready skills in the

near future. It is also recognized standard for student and professional globally,

may also help them to find a particular job where they can pursue their dreams

without entering college. One of the strand is Home Economics (HE), this strand

aims to give you job-ready skills that can help you in finding the right

employment (education.ph)

The careers that home economics include is not only for prepared women

in motherhood and home making but also for a broad spectrum of careers in

public and private education, business, social serves, dietetics, journalism, and

institutional management.

This study focuses on the specialized subject; Cookery NCII, Food and

Beverages Services, Bread and Pastry Production. Along with these specialized

subjects, this research will correlate to the management skill which were

required by the HE students using the Academic Performance in specialized

subject. From the subjects, the students will learn necessary skills needed in

the world of work, specifically in the field of management. It is important to learn

this skill to be a successful man and woman in the near future.

Three major types of Management Skills that are essential for a

successful management; Technical skill, Conceptual skill and Human or

Interpersonal management skill. (Katz, 2015).

Technical skills are the position precise knowledge and techniques. These

skills need to complete the performance and task. They typically managing

employed who used tools and techniques to make organization products or

serve the organizations customers, it tends to be more important for the first line

managers. And commonly acquired during the course of the formal education

through job training and work experience.

Conceptual skill are the skills of managers used to think conceptualized

abstract and complex situation, enable them to work at their best. To develop

the skills in controlling among various sub-unit, and visualize how the

organization fit into its broader environment. Managers also take the

responsibilities in deciding and planning what is good for the organization.

While, human or simply as the interpersonal skill is involved to the ability

of the work well and communicate properly to other people in group. All

managers manage not only their unit, but also to some sub-units of the

company. This skill is equally important to all levels of management. They have

a good human skill to get the best out of their people. Managers has the ability

to get along with and motivates people. A person in these position need a

strong working relationships with individuals at all levels and in all areas. Must

use ‘people skill’ to foster team work, build trust, manage conflict, and

encourage improvement.
This study aims to determine the relation of the specialized subjects in

Home Economics to the management skills of the students. To justify if the

management skills are applied on the said specialized subject, and also show

the capacity of Home Economics in the field of business for their future careers.

This will show if there is a significant relationship between the specialized

subject and the management skills. Students may need a training for the

improvement of their management skills for the future purposes.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to known the relationship between the management skill

of the student and their academic performance in Home Economics Specialized

Subject.

Specifically it answer the following questions;

1. What is the academic performance of Home Economics Graduates in their

specialized subject in Tolosa National High School S.Y. 2017-2018 students?

2. What is the management skill level of Home Economics Subject?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the management skill and the student

academic performance of graduate student in Home Economics Strand?

Significance of the study

The general purpose of this study is to find out if there is a correlation

between the academic performances of home economics specialized subject

and the management skills of the student. The result of the study is beneficial to

the student, parents, teachers, administrators and researcher.

The findings serve as a big help to the following:

Student- the students will enable to be aware if there is a correlation

between the academic performance and management skill of the student. This

paper will serve as guide to the students to concentrate more to their academic

performance and management skill in their child performance so they can give

time and attention in educating them.

Parents- the study will give information if there is a correlation between

the academic performance and management skill of their child performance so

they can give time and attention in educating them.

Teachers- through this study, teacher will be able to balance of teaching

in academic and management skill because it will benefit for their future.

Administrator- this study will do benefits the administrators for they will be

able to hold a program for students on how they can manage their academic

performance and management skill of the student.

Researcher- this will serve as their source in finding a research that is

related to academic performance and management skill.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the correlation between Academic

Performance in Home Economics Specialized Subject and Management Skill of

the Student of graduate in Tolosa National High School, Home Economics,

batch 2018-2019.

The researchers randomly selected 68 graduates of Home Economics.

Each respondent was given a test about management skill developed by mind

tools (Manktelow, 1996)

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Academic performance refers to the specialized subjects that are

specifically taken in Home Economics Track. The respondents will be measured

based on their grades.

Cookery NCII is one of the specialized subjects under the Technical

Vocational Livelihood learning strand. This subject consists of competencies

that a person must perform/ achieve including preparing hot, cold meals and

dessert for guest in various food and beverage service facilities. To attain the

National Qualification of Cookery NCII, the candidate may apply for assessment

in any accredited assessment center and must demonstrate competence in all

units /clusters of core units of the qualification.

Food and Beverage Services prepares you to start an international career

in the hotel, restaurant or bar business. You will learn restaurant and banquet

services techniques in our fully functioning restaurant La Saucier. The skills you

will learn in these specialized subject are : how to set up and close a restaurant

, bar techniques, cocktail preparation and beverage services, understanding

wines and wine services, effective communication with guests.

Bread and Pastry production also known as baking and pastry production

is a technical -Vocation program that develops the skills of students in prepare

and producing bakery/pastry products, cakes and desserts.

Student of the bread and pastry production program are trained in using

modern baking techniques, equipment, tools and utensils and other baking

appliances. Regulated by TESDA (the regulating body for vocational courses)

and offered by TESDA accredited training institutes. The program may also be

incorporated in under graduated courses such as BS in Hotel and Restaurant

Management (BSHRM) and BS in Tourism (BST).

According to Paglis, C (2012) course design specifically develop student

managerial skills began to emerge in the 1980’s, in response to criticism to the

theoretical of the business schools course work. A number of management

texts books focusing on skill-bases learning have been punish and many

instructors have become acquitted with both the benefit and challenges of

adopting these approaches in their classroom. The purpose is to provide a

comprehensive guide for instructors interested in offering the managerial skills

course for the first time or those seek to refresh an existing one.

Management skills is important to the student who are under on Home

Economic strand. They should play different role to acquire this management

skill and subsequently they need this kind of skills. It is really helpful to execute

the tasks in fastest way without destructions. Top managers are the individual

who are responsible for making decision about the flow of an organization and

to established policies that may affect all organizational member. Manager

managed the management to become a highly organized and competitive

establishment. No doubt, that management skills is what a student need if their

goal is to be a successful business tycoon. But, student should experience it

first them to get with it faster. Applying the thing they learned from the

specialized subject are more effective way than just memorizing it without an

action.

According to the study of Analoui (1995), in order for the managers to be

effective not only require tasks and people skills and also self-development

knowledge and skills. Thus, managers must be progressive in anything related

to their profession and to cope easily in any situation. Through the task they are

performing the skills they’ve learned are being acquired as they finished.

Experience are sure of the things that a student must collect. In short,

experiences can lead them to discover new things that may contribute not just

for them-selves but also for their future sake. They will be discovering a new

skill that can add on their capability as a future manager.

According to Meissner, E & Radford K. (2014) future training opportunities

provide to middle managers need to address the ‟softer” skills (e.g. clinical

skills). Middle managers perceive a discovering between performance the need

to develop their communication skills, effect resolution and leadership skills

(Meissner, E &Radford k.2014).

According to Isfahani, HM. Et all (2014) The different organizations

performance is mainly influenced by their managers performance. In short, if the

manager is active and managers well the organization then the organization is

more progressive and competitive enough to any challenges that the

organization may face. This student should acquire the management skills that

assist them to cope the obstacles their facing with the specialized subject.
This study aims to people and test a genera framework describing what

managers might need to learn, and to understand from where existing

managers have Acquired the skills and qualities they currently use.

Given the test questionnaire, developed by mind tools (Manktelow, 1996), the

instrument used in gathering data will be distributed to the respondent and from there,

the information obtained from the respondents can now determine the correlation

between the two variables.

Theoretical

The philosophical foundation which will be examined in this study are the

learning theories by Jerome Bruner (1915) known as discovery learning and by

David Kolb (1939) known as an experiential theory. A discovery learning is a

method of inquiry-based instruction. This popular theory encourages learners to

build on past experiences and knowledge, we their intuitions, imagination, and

creativity, and search for new information to discover fact, correlation and new

truths.

A learning theory by David A. Kolb (1939). known as experiential learning

is one way to support the discovery learning. A four-stage cyclical learning

theory that shows a holistic perspective that combine experience, perception

cognition and behavior in learning. It has a kind impact on the learning styles of

the student -building upon earlier work by John Dewey and Kurt Levin,

American educational theorist David A. Kolb believe that ‟learning” is the

process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of

experience (1984, p.38).

In this study, the two variables are the specialized subject and the

management skills. Specialized subject is one way to train student in their

management skills. Student can acquire knowledge through divert teaching and

in the same way, they can acquire skills through experiences.

Hence with simple understanding, experiential theory and the discovery

learning is the philosophical theory that experience is the source of knowledge,

it is the most appropriate and most relevant learning theory to establish the

theoretical ground work for this study.

Research Hypothesis
There is significant relationship between the management skill of the

student and academic performance in home economics specialized subject.

Definition of terms

Academic performance - is the extent to which a student, teacher or institutions

has achieved their short or long - term education goals.

Management skills - can be defined as certain attributes or abilities that an

executive should prosses in order to sustain specific tasks in an organization.

Home economics – is the profession and field of study that deals with the

economics and management of the home and community.

Specialized subject - a school or university subject that concentrates on a

particular field of knowledge what subject. This Specialized Subject are they;

Cookery NCII, Food and Beverages Services, Bread and Pastry Production.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, respondents of the study,

locale of the study, sampling procedure, research instrument, data collection,

data analysis and statistical treatment.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher will use the descriptive-correlational method for

quantitative method in conducting of this study. Quantitative methods can be

used to verify which of the hypotheses are true. The management skill test or

mind tools (Manketelow, 1996) will be used to gather data on determining the

management skill of the student.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study are the grade 12 students from the Home

Economics Strand. These students are graduates from Tolosa National High

School. The respondents came from two (2) section of Home Economics which

consists of 68 students, for the HE-1 there are 36 students while for the He-2

there are 32. The participants of the survey will be selected using simple

random sampling. And our possible respondents are 59 based on morgan table

determining the sample size.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

Tolosa is one of the towns of Leyte in Eastern Visayas. This municipality

consists of 15 barangays. There are two public school in Tolosa and one of

them is Tolosa National High School which served as our respondents of this

study. The address of the school is located at Brgy. Malbog Tolosa, Leyte.

SAMPLING PROCEDURE

The study was adopted a simple random sampling in the selection of the

participants in the study. There are two sections in grade 12 SHS Home

Economics previous graduate. We listed the names of the students, and

according to Morgan table for determining the sample size we had 59

respondents.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The study used test questionnaire developed my mind tools. The

questionnaire contained two parts. Part I is the general average of the student

in their specialized subject and part 2 is a test developed by mind tools to

determine the managed skill of the student.

DATA COLLECTION

The researches seek permission for the school principal pertaining to the

conduct of study. They also asked permission to the parent to administer the

data gathering. The researcher distributed the test questionnaires to the 59

respondents taken from two section. Students were instructed to read well the

directions, and put check on the appropriate column from the scale of 1-5.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data was adopted through the test questionnaire which were put check of

every column from the scale of 1-5.

Description Grading scale Remarks

Outstanding 90-100 Passed

Very Satisfactory 85-89 Passed

Satisfactory 80-84 Passed

Fairly Satisfactory 75-79 Passed

Did not meet Below 75 Failed

expectation
The following rating scale that is adopted from mind tools will be used to

determine the management skill of the respondent:

Scale Description Range

1 Does not meet the standards 1.00-1.49

2 Meet some standards 1.50-2.49

3 Meet the standards 2.50-3.49

4 Exceeds the standards 3.50-4.49

5 Far exceeds the standards 4.50-5.00

STATISTICAL TREATMENT

In determining the percentage distribution of the respondents by their

general average of their specialized subject, the percentage formula will be

used. The formula is:

𝑓
𝑃 = 𝑁 × 100

N= total number of students

P= percentage

f= frequency

The correlation between management skill of the student and the

academic performance of Home Economics Specialized Subject will be

determined by the mean score using the formula.

∑𝑥
𝑥= 𝑁

Where;

X= mean score

∑ 𝑥 = 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑠

N= total number of items

Pearson(r) correlation

𝑁 ∑ 𝑥𝑦−∑ 𝑥 ∑ 𝑦
𝑟𝑥𝑦 =
√𝑁(∑ 𝑥 2 − ∑ 𝑥)2 𝑁

Where;

N= number of sizes in a sample size

∑ 𝑥 = 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑥

∑ 𝑦 = 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑦

∑ 𝑥𝑦 = 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑥 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦

∑ 𝑥 2 = sum of square of x

∑ 𝑦 2 = 𝑠𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑦

Test for Significance

𝑡=𝑟 𝑁−2 df= N-2
