Why the future doesn’t need us

By: Bill Joy

Technology have efficiently taken on tasks saving human sweat, time and effort. We’re so dependent to
it that we want to live with no human effort. Our decisions were also convinced by the transformative effects
of technology on society, we do not decide for ourselves rather the machines instead. Most of the time,
machines make a sounder decision than that of human-made, however robot do not have emotions thus
making it an inefficient decision. An example is that machines draws us to be more curious and careless. We
become careless in the sense that we only think of ourselves, we forgot that there are still other creations like
the animals and plants. Is it because they do not have the capability to complain means we’re permitted to
decide for them? Abusing their existence does not validate our upmost position in hierarchy but of our
impotence in face of decision making. Eventually plants and animals will cease to exist, then whom we will
consider animals then? Our neighbors? Another is that we are never satisfied, we create prey to our race. Our
curiosity brings us to danger. The creations of robots for the reason of convenience will eventually succeed
over years. I remember the video I watched before about humanoid robot “Sophia” wherein in an interview
she said that she wants to destroy humans. We are entitled to procreate but not like those robots with
insufficient knowledge about life. Not just these robots but also the weapons for warfare like bombs, guns,
artillery and the like. The knowledge of creating them is the weapon against ourselves. Instead of thinking
ways how to survive united because there is only one Earth, we use these weapons against our neighbor. If
technology is so good, why does it divide society? Lastly, the complexity of technology is becoming more and
more. It can now self-replicate. If ever those technologies have ability to come united, as early as now we’re
extinct.

Technology is good in any form, it enables us to do things that were previously unimaginable. There’s
no denying that it is great. However, by degrees, the technology is going against us. Eventually it will succeed
human race. From there, I learned that the problem that we should be taking into account is “ourselves” not
the technology because we are the one who gave rise to it. We lack satisfaction in the sense that we want
more of what we have now, in that case we end up creating our own demons – robots and some technologies.
Lastly we can never tame technology unless we understand ourselves first. Knowing ourselves first is the
beginning of all wisdom mean. We are regarded as topmost in the hierarchy, WE MUST THINK AND ACT
ACCORDINGLY.
