WOMAN AS KARTA OF FAMILY AND ITS IMPLICATION ON GENDER INEQUALITY

DEBATE

Women mean half of humanity but they played only second fiddle to men in all walks of life.
They are condemned to be within the four walls of the house. A lot has to be done to make
women’s truly emancipated. She continues to be plagued with hordes of problem- gender bias,
physical abuse and torture, illiteracy, poverty, economic dependence on male etc. Woman as
KARTA is considered superior not because of the gender rather being superior in capability.

When in a maternity hospital a child is born and the vagitanus of that child is heard, then the first
insight of its family is that whether it is a girl or a boy. When they are informed that it is a girl,
they gets disappointed. From the rich to the poor, no one wants girls. They try to eliminate them
instead of dealing with the problem of raising their expenses. The baby is abandoned at the
doorstep of hospitals, orphanages and even garbage dumps or killed soon after birth. Girls are
treated as a burden unlike boys. When it’s a boy, all his family members become happy and
elated that an earner, a protection giver is born. Though it’s an irony that today when we look at
the society mostly crimes and unsocial activities are done by boys.

We live in a tradition bound society where women areconsidered as KARTA or manager of the
house, but in true sense is no less than a labor. Woman devote an inordinate amount of time and
energy waxing floors, making house free of germs and seeking to meet other extraordinary
standards of cleanliness, which we constitute as Karta. For doing all the householdchores all day
throughout, she may not receive appreciation but will definitely be criticized for missing any
work. Women’s work is not paid so is not valued. Before her marriage she is expected to do all
the household stuff by her parents and even after her marriage also she is doing housework,
taking care of children and carrying out assorted jobs for husband are all done by women merely
as a labor force. All working women’s even an IPS officer has to do the basic household stuffs.
Open minded woman’s are not accepted in the society.

In gender discrimination by giving merely the examples of 2-3 cases where women’s were given
equal status we assume that the entire society has ensured equality for women’s. Men can also be
said Karta when equal opportunity and respect is given to both. It is not a women’s right to hold
the house but rather she is obliged or bound to do so. Gender discrimination arises because the
doer of the work is a female but the outcome of that work is enjoyed by male. This discrimination
starts at the time of birth. It is the irony of our society that if one girl achieves great heights in
her life, inspired by her the doors for 10 more girls are open but if one girl does any wrongful act
then the doors for 100 girls are been shut down.

Our society is a male dominating society. Regarding the decisions of the house women’s are kept
in limelight as KARTA but behind the curtains her decisions are influenced by males. Therefore,
by giving rights no change could be bought in society but need is for giving similar respect and
status to both man and woman.

A new start in a new direction has to be made without the influence of the past where woman be
able to hold her head high and lead a life of dignity and not merely as a KARTA. The aim should
be on how we can give equal respect and opportunity to a girl living in poverty and to the one
who is about to come in this world. Merely wishful thinking will lead us nowhere Hence, it’s
time to “Raise your actions not words as it is rain that grows flower not thunder”.
