ABSTRACT
Plastic waste disposal has become a serious issue on the global scale. Waste plastic, can be
effectively used in the construction of flexible pavements. Here an attempt is being made to
use pyro oil obtained by pyrolysis of plastic waste in paving bitumen as an additive. Present
study aims to determine the transition temperature of pyro oil modified bitumen (POMB) and
unmodified binder using rotational viscometry. Viscosity grade 30 (VG-30) was used as a
base binder for modification. Pyro oil used for the modification of base VG-30 binder was
obtained from pyrolysis of high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic waste at 600‫ﹾ‬C. The
contents of pyro oil used for modification of base binder were 2%, 3% and 5% by the weight
of base binder. Pyro oil and base binder were mixed at the temperature of 160‫ﹾ‬C using
homogeniser at the speed of 3000 rotations per minute for 20 minutes to have better
compatibility. Total four samples of POMB were tested along with the base VG-30 binder.
Bituminous binder shows transition from Newtonian fluid to non-Newtonian fluid during the
mixing and compaction process. Here an attempt is being made to analyse this transition by
measuring apparent viscosity of binder. Rotational viscometer (RV) was used to determine
the apparent viscosity of VG-30 and POMB. Each POMB sample along with the base VG-30
binder sample was tested for viscosity at variable shear rates. Suitable testing protocol was
used in which both temperature and shear rate were varied simultaneously. Testing was done
within the temperature range of 900C and 2000C. Resultant graphs showing variation of
apparent viscosity with respect to temperature were obtained. Transition temperatures of both
binders were then calculated and compared.
