Dear Secretary _______,

I would like to address the issue regarding the proper waste management in the
community of Manila. Waste management is collection, transportation, and disposal of
garbage, sewage and other waste products. I have observed that there are only few
garbage cans found around the streets of the community. Because of this, some
individuals have been throwing their trash on improper places such as sidewalks, rivers,
and on different areas around the community. Moreover, these trashes accumulate on
different areas causing pollution and even sickness to those individuals living on
depressed areas. An example of this is the state of Manila Bay, wherein garbage are
usually being irresponsibly disposed in this area, which causes water pollution and
endangering the marine animals that inhabit the harbor.

The importance of proper garbage disposal should be promoted in the community

of Manila. Furthermore, I would like to request for an increase of garbage disposal bins
and for these to be placed in an organize manner on every street in Manila. Additionally,
people from the community should attend seminars regarding the advantages of proper
garbage disposal and the disadvantages of improper garbage disposal. With these
implemented, the community of Manila will prosper by developing a clean environment
to live in. Moreover, the less trash that is scattered in the community equates to healthier
individuals.

Garbage disposal bins should be divided into four categories: recyclables, non-
recyclable, biodegradable and non-biodegradable. With this implemented, garbage are
properly segregated which also efficiently recycle other waste products that can be
sustained and used again. However, some individuals are uneducated regarding the
differences between recyclable and non-recyclable, and biodegradable and non-
biodegradable. Because of these, people should be required to attend seminars and
orientations regarding the proper waste segregation and its benefits to our community.

Recyclable wastes are those substances, which can be reuse in any form again
after use such as plastic bottles, plastic containers and others. On the other hand, non-
recyclable wastes are those that cannot be used in any form again such as food waste,
polythene bags, disposable diapers and others. Moreover, biodegradable wastes are
substances originating from plant or animal sources that can be degraded by other living
organism such as wood, paper, food waste, leaves, grass clippings. Wastes that cannot be
broken down by other living organisms are called non-biodegradable such as plastic bags,
metals, medical wastes and electronic devices.
As a Thomasian student, I would like to advocate for the cleanliness of our
environment. With this, I would aim to promote the importance and the proper ways of
maintaining a clean community where health and safety of individuals are also
prioritized. My goal is to also be more knowledgeable and practice the process of proper
waste management. Moreover, it is also significant to practice a lifestyle that includes
less use of plastic and find other alternatives that provide the same purpose.

Furthermore, as a Thomasian, I practice the three core values, which are

compassion, commitment and competence.

We are stewards of our own planet and we should be the ones who would put an
effort in taking care of it and ensuring its welfare.
