Introduction
Language assessment is often thought to be negative because we usually think it has to
do with a written test. After we took this course we as a team came to the conclusion
that language assessment doesn’t really need to be a written test, but collection of
information a teacher can obtain from students to determine whether they have certain
ability and knowledge. This assessment could be through tests, that is the most common
one, or also through any other activity like the ones we created for this project.

The two main types of language assessment are formative and summative. Formative
assessment involves our everyday classroom activities, homework, feedback, that is
informal assessment. We assess our students everyday using any kind of activity or just
by telling them how they are doing every day. Summative assessment is on the other
hand, formal; the most common tests we have at the end of a course are included in this
type of assessment.

When a student is trying to learn a second language, in this case English, it’s important
to be assessed and know where you stand. Teachers can know if they are doing a good
job as teachers through the grades of the student, as well as the students know if they
have made progress or not. Assessing language is a guide for both students and
teachers.

An achievement test can tell the students a standardized level or grade so they know
exactly where they are. It measures the skill and knowledge and the end of a course and
gives them the result of what they have been learning in a certain period of time, if they
met the goal or not.

The test we had to create was designed for intermediate students. We took a small
section of a book and created exercises that measure writing, reading, speaking,
listening, vocabulary and grammar. All of these activities were related to technology,
the topic of the book we were given, each of the sections contain three different
activities. Some of the activities have a special grading criteria, and some others share
the same one.

Grading and student evaluation
Daily assignments 20%
Daily participation 20%
Exams (Partial 20% Final 35%
80% )
Oral presentation 25%
Total 100%

Daily assignments: students need to show they are working during the class and not
waiting to go home and look it up in the internet.

Daily participation: They have to make an effort and practice what they are learning.

Exams: they have to show they remember what they learnt.

Presentation: it is as important as an exam, but they are not put under pressure.

These grades should reflect what the students actually know and remember from their
classes, instead of memorizing a lot of information for the tests. That is why the written
exams should not have an extremely high grade, they should have the same points as the
rest.

The teachers need to see the level of the students and all the resources they have; for
example, depending on the number of students, the teacher should choose a different
activity to assess speaking, in this case with an oral presentation.

Conclusion
This project made us realize how hard it is to make a test reliable in a positive
way. We came to the conclusion that testing each skill needs to be planned carefully, in
order to provide accurate and satisfactory results. It is very hard to make students see an
exam as something good, and the best way to do it is looking at the things that are really
important and not focusing on assessing with long exams that tell you nothing about
what the students know. We have to find the middle point between a fun and
challenging assessment method.
